Vergne is a proven (very?) good F1 driver.

 

That isn't enough to stay in the queue for a Red Bull seat - see Liuzzi, Speed, Bourdais, Buemi, Algersuari, 

 

They all had a crack, and they weren't fast enough even though Buemi is 2014 WEC champion and Bourdais was invincible in CART.

 

Sainz is there with potential not a huge wallet.

I dont think it's about the money with RB and TR tbh

I do support drivers more than teams but Mclaren is a team I always want to do well, regardless who drives for them.

These days with so much driving talent about a driver has less pull then they used to. A team cares about the Constructors Championship first

If a team, any team, makes it clear that they care more about a piece of metal than about their staff then why should I support them because they're not likely to care about me?

Agreed; if you can sell 10 googleplexes of cans at 1 currency unit each and make 5% profit it won't take long before you have more money than Bernie does!

I think, traditionally, McLaren (Ron) have refused to countenace engine partner interference in driver choice.

 

True the Honda arrived with Senna, but then who wouldn't have taken Ayrton.

 

Subsequently Peugeot tried to foist French drivers on the team - Alliot only got a go when Mika or Martin was unavailable for a reason I forget.

 

Mercedes were very keen to have Heidfeld on board but Mika / DC / Kimi were Ron's choices.

 

I really don't think Honda will have a major say this time.

Obviously there are still questions are whether Caterham and/or Marussia/Manor will race in 2015. Caterham have been granted a dispensation to race with the 2014 car if they find a buyer.

I wasn't really surprised with Macca retaining Button. With his performance levels, massive presence in Japan and truck loads of class Ron would be an insane fool to let him go.

It that long as they wanted to soften poor Jenson when it came to negotiating final contract value. He went for it as he knew he will be able to get recuperate some/all/make more money from endorsements on the Japanese market.
