HELP owned 2weeks and gone wrong

Featured Replies

Ok so I have wanted a skoda octavia for a number of years and finally bought one, a 2010 1.6tdi cyc 45k on the clock full skoda history. I read and read on which engine to go for and have always had diesels, saw all the horro strorys on EGR and DPF but thought hey they cant be all bad well after only 2 weeks of motoring I have had an engine warning light come on flashing glow plugs comes and goes. Symtons are hard to start from cold and when it does wont tick over and wont set off without stalling. Had a VAG expert out and gave me

7329 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
          P0101 00 [096] - Implausible Signal
Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00000001
                    Fault Priority: 2
                    Fault Frequency: 2
                    Mileage: 69626 km
                    Date: 2051.14.02
                    Time: 17:53:35

It makes me love my seat altea with 170K on it even more never had one thing go wrong on it.

Ok any ideas is this a big fix or a cheap one, where do I start.

Many Thanks

Just replace the MAF sensor, its on the pipework between the airbox and intake manifold. Replace with a genuine one if you want something that is going to last. Failure seems common, perhaps due to some being replaced with cheaper alternatives.

As Manny says. If you want another check, disconnect the MAF, and the engine should run better.

First thing I would say is back to the trader, unless you bought privately.

The VW guy said he checked and cleaned the MAF and does not think it is that more like EGR but he said he cant be sure. Bought of a trader but a one man band trader some 200miles away. Just dont know where to go with this one.

The EML and flashing glow plugs would mean the car is dropping into limp-home mode.

This sounds more than just the MAF sensor. Have you tried disconnecting it to see if the car runs better?

It runs fine and is not in limp mode, the only issue other than the intermittant flashing glow plug is that intermittently when starting from cold it runs ruff and will stall when you try to set of takes about 4 goes to be able to set off then no other problems. Does any one know if its ment to only rev to 2500rpm stationary is this a safe mode.

Cleaning a MAF does not always fix the fault, and even then should only be a temporary fix until you can get a new one.

The starting problem could be because the car thinks the air temperature is wrong, so is supplying to much or not enough fuel.

Local skoda want £135 for a MAF sensor, is this about right or are there cheaper places to get them from. Cheers

Euro car parts do Bosch re- manufactured ones cheaper but you have to exchange your old maf.

The 2500 rpm rev limit will be by design - nothing to worry about.  The VW price sounds about right, bear in mind that VW parts have a 2 year warranty.

Did you do 25000k in 10 days ?

69,626 km = 43,623 miles.

2500rpm rev limit when stationary is standard, my vRS is the same

Well MAF been cleaned VW specialist guy said he does not think its this, have taken it to Skoda main and they cant find a problem as there are no warning lights. When it does this it smokes like a bad un white smoke but when it stops running ruff all is fine and only does it cold over night but not 100% of the time about 90%. I am starting to loose the will to live with this car

White smoke can mean water in the combustion process, from either in the diesel or intake system. Any signs of this? Presumably when the engine is hot the water is burnt off of dried off. Is your head gasket ok?

Hard to start in the mornings + white smoke could be a sign of glow plugs not working , can be caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor thinking your engine is hot.

Head gasket is fine Skoda has said they think its the EGR but will not do it as it has not failed so they can not be 100%sure. They have had it 3 days and as of yet they cant get it to poor start of get  the glow plug light flashing, when I had it it was doing it every day typical. I dont know what to do with it I under normal circumstances I would just get on with it untill total failure but because I have only had it for 3 weeks I just want rid of it. May have to be something newer with a warranty.

As Manny says. If you want another check, disconnect the MAF, and the engine should run better.

Understand that this step is purely for diagnosis but wonder what the long term implications of disconnecting the MAF would be? Would the ECU use pre determined mass air flow data (instead of live data with MAF connected) and therefore the fuel consumption with MAF disconnected would be suboptimal?

Do you leave it parked outside overnight? You say Skoda have had it 3 days and cant get it to poor start. Are they keeping it indoors overnight? Maybe damp issue in the electrics somewhere.

You are entirely correct; with the MAF disconnected there's a default set of airflow data to use, but you'd lose economy and power long-term.

Right a stupid question do you have a lot of keys on your fob. when the car goes to the dealer is it a key on its own. Herd a lot of this on modern car keys inter fear with electrics especially nissan and fiats. A couple of guys at work had same problem the nissan refusing to start unless just a fob with no other keys whatsoever.
