VRS Fuel/MPG problem - Help required!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new to site, and have recently bought a 2004 Octavia VRS in Magic Black, 108k on the clock, one previous lady owner from new, FSH, and totally standard in a very well looked after condition.

Love the car, just one problem the MPG is terrible! and I've only ever used V-Power.

I've read a lot of threads and useful information on the site to try fix the problem, but still the same.

Since buying the car, I've changed the MAF sensor (bought direct from Skoda), ECU updated - standard Skoda, changed Air Filter and Fuel Filter, Cleaned Throttle Body and re-aligned, Smoke test carried out at VAG Specialist in Leeds (No leaks at all), No error codes either.

I know Temp Sensor is mentioned a lot, but had that checked and the temperature displayed was the same on vagcom, so don't think its that?

Just out of ideas now and annoying me, I put £20.00 V-Power few days ago, and only managed to cover 70 miles to 0!, that worked out at 21mpg and that was doing 50/60mph on a steady drive, yet the Trip comp said 33mpg.

I'm aware town driving will lower MPG, but even at that i would expect to see 25-30.

Any suggestions/help would be great

Thanks

Is the temp sensor staying at 90 when warm?

Yes pal, It is

Thanks

I had my air intake temp sensor (the small one after the throttle body) go funny recently and my fuel economy was awful! I replaced mine and it's a different car to drive now. I've heard of people cleaning them..

I assume youve checked you have no sticking brakes or a sticky handbrake? Just because you have poor mpg doesnt always mean the engine is to blame

I would probably question your mpg calculation method to start with. My fuel gauge takes ages to get down to half from a full tank. But then it drops like a stone from a quarter, which is probably about where your £20 gets you! Brim the tank, drive about, brim it again and then work it out from there. The trip computer reporting 33mpg on a steady drive off-boost won't be that far off.

Agree, do a couple of full brim to brim calcs it's the only way to get an accurate reading.

Mines can be a bit strange at times.

I replaced my MAF sensor last year and it actually droped my MPG from 39/40 to almost 30..........got another one sent out (as a faulty part) and had the same effect.
So, i decided to unplug my MAF sensor and now im getting over 40mpg consistantly..........I do alot of A road driving from the Highlands down to Edinburgh on the A9.
With these dam Average Speed Cameras up now everyone is scared to get the toe down, so average speed is now under 50mph but MPG can be as high as 46!! Plug the MAF sensor back in and it drops it down 35mpg...........

So, the MAF sensor stays unplugged :p

i thought unpluging the maf made it over fule as the maf works out how much fule to dump in, by unpluging it, it whould just dump in loads of fule, no?

Hi all,

Thanks for the advise, I haven't noticed any sticky brakes or handbrake, and I will do the brim to brim and get some figures.
