How quickly do you go through tyres?

Featured Replies

I'm finding I am going through front tyres quite quickly on my 1.9TDi. :( I wondered whether anyone else has found this a problem.

The 1.9 TDi is quite a heavy engine and I do live in Mid Wales which has a few twisty roads!

I am having to change the fronts every 10K. I have tried different makes, Avon's didn't last long at all, and the cheaper Coopers I have just had on actually did better!

I didn't have this issue with the Octavia's, Felicia's, Favorit's before. I know the Fabia is a bit different. My driving hasn't changed much either between all of the cars I have owned.

Does anyone recommend a decent, reasonably price tyre that might last a bit longer than 10K on the front?

Currently have 16" 5 spoke Skoda alloy's 205/55 R16.

Thanks in advance

Probably the weight and torque of the diesel?

My HTP is on 13k with about 3mm left on the front.

15k in the Clio, last van was 3K if driving carefully.

Yes I think the same Otaylor. At £100 a tyre its a bit annoying, though if you have had 13K with 3mm left then I guess mines not too bad! :)

Hmm. Considering I've only got about 80 lb ft of torque and a light engine.

Its the corners i think. I dont like to hang around haha.

I'll be interested to see what others have to say anyway. I'm not liking these Bridgestone Turanza er300's that are on. Far too noisey and annoying.

I found with my van as I'm only just down the road that winter tŷres and cheap tŷres wore a lot lot better as the rubber is harder.

Yes the different compounds make a heck of a difference. I think the Avon's I had only did 5K and I sent them back to them for checking as I could not believe they had worn out in that time!

The cheaper tyres seem to have lasted better, though I don't want to fork out over £100 a corner if I can help it. I think the coopers were nearly £100 last time :(

When I bought the car it did have some decent tyres on it, so will be interesting to hear how others have got on.

My last set were £45 each and got 12k out of them

Thats good toxicvrs. What size were they? I think its the low profile on mine which bump the price up. I remember getting my Favorit tyres for about £40 each!

185/60/15 on the van mate. Will get them on this current van I've got too

Just be careful how cheap you go.

Dont want to be compromising on safety, especially this time of year

Ive been quite surprised with them, more offroad grip than the Contis

I splashed out on the Avon's then found they were rubbish!

Will have to see how it goes. Hopefully they will do a bit longer, Im keeping a close eye on them.

What make are those for £40 Toxic?

I'm in the process of sorting out tyres to replace the rubbish that Arnold Clark sent the car out on when we bought it, two of them I've never heard of and one I suspect was rustled up by a guy living in a tent in the woods. In fact, I checked on the Auchinlea tyres website for ideas and this particular tyre came up, with the message saying "ideal for the low annual mileage driver who's very budget conscious".

So I'm deliberating about whether or not to get steel wheels and winter tyres, or just get good all weathers, or what to do. Still looking at prices etc on various brands.

In terms of wear, it can be a strange old thing. I had Nexen on a 5 series on the rear, and they lasted 17k easily. My daughter recently put them on the front of her Fiat 500 and I think she's been lucky to get 9k out of them, with them worn down to 3mm and about to get changed.

My wife had Pirelli on her last car, a Seat Ibiza tdi. She bought them in October 2010 and had to change them in June 2011, they had covered 7k miles. My son had Uniroyal Rainsport on his Golf, lasted about 11 or 12k, he then tried Kumho and got about 10k, and has now got Bridgestone to try.

One I've never heard of. They're cheap and crappy but hard wearing.

Hi Richard, how long do tyres last is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string! If you see what I mean. My Fabia Mk2 Estate with the 1422cc PD engine had Continentals on it and those lasted 22k miles on the front before needing replacement. I never ever rotate tyres either. I like to replace only two tyres at once. All rotating does is make the car wear out all the tyres at the same time. Expensive all at once!  I didn't hang about either. My driving mix was 50% dual carriage ways and the rest urban and town use. It too had lots of wheel spinning torque. Yours is even greater. Having said that your fronts are not lasting anywhere near as long as I would expect. So firstly, are the tyres wearing evenly? If so then it's your driving style that is wearing them so fast. Not just acceleration, but braking habits will affect the time the tyres last. But you know all that. The 1.9 is one of the best and fastest diesel cars of it's time so don't be surprised at your tyre results. You may need to step back a bit and really examine how you drive. Of course, it will be affected by the roads you drive on too. But I know you know all that. Generally speaking, changing brands of tyre will usually only make a small difference to how long they last.

I'm in Lampeter so know and drive on lots of the roads you would be. Up until 2 months ago I was driving from Swansea to Aberaeron everyday and I'd get 8-10k out of a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3's but this was driving early morning, late evening so no traffic and I could really push on. At £100 a tyre they aren't cheap but I tried Uniroyal's Rainsport tyre and nuked that in 3k. Now on a wider Kumho and it feels awful. The extra width is good but nowhere near as much grip. It slides away even under half-throttle, almost as if the tyre isn't getting up to temperature.

09 Mk2 fabia 2 HTP - 32000 miles/5 years on front set OE Bridgestone Turanza 300, down to 2.5mm. Noisy tyre, not very good fuel economy, lethal on snow/ice but otherwise fine. Rears 4.5mm now on front with new  Vredestein Quatrac Lites all season on rear, which are much quieter - plan is to switch to all season all round soon.

04 Mk1 Fabia Comfort SE 1.2 - Fronts  30000 (Conti premium contact) 35000 (OE  Conti Eco contact 3) - 58000 !! (Michelin Energy saver) Rears last much much longer.

It'll be down to the compound too, not just your engine and driving habits. I have a set of cheapos on mine and I've had them for the 9000 or so miles that I've had the car and they don't look bad at all, I'd say less than half warn. But I don't go gentle with them by no means. They just slide everywhere because they're rubbish. I can't remember the make off the top of my head.

I'm on over 20k on a pair of P-Zeros on the front, and around 30k on Hancook on the back.

I had the tracking done when the Pirellis went on and that has helped a lot.

All seem to have a fair bit of life left.  Mainly motorway miles, driving miss daisy style and not much weight in the car, with all up to 2.1 bar.

Many thanks for all of the responses  Much appreciated.

It doesn't seem to make much difference spending on different and more expensive brands by the sounds of it. I don't think my driving style is that bad. I sometimes get overtaken and often people drive at the same speed as me, I overtake the dawdlers obviously! I will probably try coopers again by the looks of it! :)

I went through the original continentals on mine in 30,000 miles. Replaced with Michelin Pilots which are coming up to 20,000 with 4mm left. On the back one of them is still original and I am about to roll over to 50,000 miles.

Most of my driving up to 43,000 was motorways, now it is all in the peak district on smaller roads so we will see if I start munching through them faster.

My tyres were rotated at each service and I ended up replacing all 4 with Hankooks Kinergys at 36000 miles. Quite expensive but happy with the performance of these tyres.

Threadbear, I just replaced my Turanza's on my Fabia Estate with Hankook Kinergy and they are just brilliant. Very quiet compared to the Turanzas. However, I got mine from a firm called Event Tyres. They come to you at home or at work and fit them. Very good service and I got mine (a set of four) at just £62 each. Cracking!! She drive like a limousine and I'm getting more mpg's. Important on a 1.6 16v Tiptronic!

Hi

I had two Fabia's 1.9 TDIs PDs, 104 bhp, Level 2 and SE, Estates and got from the front Dunlop Sports about 30 thousand miles and the rears about 60 thousand miles doing 22 thousand a year on mostly motorways.  I never rotated the tyres because I wanted the most rubber, grip, on the fronts.

I think buy a well known make and shop around.

Hope this helps.

Diesel Estate.
