What does Q plate mean?

A 'Q' plate is usually issued if the exact date & origin of manufacture cannot be confirmed. Kit cars and some imports can fall into this category.

A bit more info from the DVLA here

IIRC a Q plate is for cars that have been re registered or things like kit cars that have less than a certain percentage of parts from the original donor car.

i.e Insurance write off's if re registered after a rebuild sometimes get a Q reg.

Wondering about Jason's car now :D

A Q plate means that the initial date of registration is not known.

Car registration in the UK seems so complicated for me ...

Note that you probably won't be allowed your bike on the bus though :P

Wouldnt recommend cycling unless there are cycle paths - I moved to the UK from Holland, so pretty experienced cycler would be an understatement, but it's suicide in most places to cycle. High-vis clothing, helmet are bare minimum reqs if you cycle a fair bit here, or I suppose if you do go mountain-biking if you do it off-road you'll live too :D

Q plates tend to be for either kit cars, or 'one-offs' tested under SUV or for insurance write offs that have been bought from the insurancere companies and either been re-built or they simply weren't economically viable for the insurance company to repair 'profesionally' and have been sold on for Joe Bloggs to repair.

.

...IMHO I would suspect, since the car in question is not likely to have been driven by Miss Daisy, its more likely to have been closely aquainted with a lampost or hedgerow in its previous life.

Hehehe  And this happens to one who raised in a very bicycle dominated nation

I guess getting along with left-handed traffic might take a while.

A workmate has been in Dublin/Ireland for a job training a few years ago.

As he wanted to cross the street, he looked to the wrong side and has been struck by a car.

But he wasn

Plus cyclists lack courtesy and common sense in UK so are fair game for us motorists!

Q plates can also mean a stolen & recovered car. I'd definitely do an HPI check on it, that should tell you why it's on a Q plate.

Q plates can also mean a stolen & recovered car.

Cut & Shuts are Q plated, but AFAIK they are not applied to stolen/recovered's unless the identity has been obscured in some way.

hmm-read the first two/three posts and thinking that J's car should have a Q plate!!!

When did they make cut'n'shuts illegal?

Rob.

That doesn't say it's illegal to do it though...just depends how it's sold?

Rob.

Please tell me you are joking?

Depends how it is sold????

Read the article, the clues are all there!

"Criminals carry out the work"

"Suspect vehicle is a C&S - contact the police."

"Keeping hold of it or trying to sell it on could leave you facing criminal charges."

"Trading Standards"

You are joking right?

This uses the words "Illegal practice."

I find it worrying that a moderator on a car forum thinks cut and shuts aren't illegal. :D

My comments are meant in a light hearted manner.

"Criminals carry out the work"

Bit of a generalisation there.

"Suspect vehicle is a C&S - contact the police."

Doesn't say that making a cut and shut is illegal.

"Keeping hold of it or trying to sell it on could leave you facing criminal charges."

Doesn't say it's illegal to do a cut'n'shut...just keeping hold of one or trying to sell it *could* leave you facing criminal charges.

"Trading Standards"

And what do they deal with? The way things are sold. Which is why it's vehicle FRAUD to sell one as a legitimate vehicle, but not illegal to do a cut'n'shut as such (unless legislation has changed, which is why I asked my original question).

Which is why it has been a problem in the past, as the lack of illegality surrounding actually doing a cut'n'shut has left people with very little recourse except via Trading Standards.

The second article I posted states that it is an illegal practice!

C'mon man.

I will rest my case here, there is no point in reasoning with the unreasonable.

Or, you could just answer my original question...

Not like the BBC ever get anything wrong either. Is there nothing more concrete than that available?

The DVLA don't seem to think that Cut & Shuts are illegal and even state that they would give them a Q plate - see this link which bk1 listed earlier on in this thread. :)
