Clutch In Or Out?

Featured Replies

You learn something new every day,you are right have just tried mine and works as described, was waiting for the car to stall and it gently moved forward, same in reverse.

I could also do this in my mk1 fabia vRS all the way up to 4th should you wish to.

As for starting mine has stop start so will not start without clutch down.

Is this news, being able to let the clutch up only to move the car? I was taught to do that on my first driving lesson back in 2004. Is this not standard practice, to teach people you don't need to rev the nuts off the engine with the clutch half up to manoeuvre?

I know some instructors use this to teach fine clutch control. But it's only really good for dead-slow manoeuvres on a level road surface. I'm not sure to what extent it's Good Sympathy to be loading the engine in this rev-band or provoking the anti-stall like this. (I'm certain in the past, on certain non-DBW cars, I could feel the gas pedal depressing on its own as the engine fought to keep alive.)

What is "anti-stall" really? I'm pretty sure there isn't such thing if we are talking about Citigo.

Citigo just tries to keep constant idle speed, and have very limited opportunities to do so. It compensates load given by lights or/and kompressor easily. It also tries to keep idle speed constant if you release clutch out very gently. But that's about all.

Also, has anyone else noticed that theirs idles at 1000rpm when the car is rolling, and drops to 800rpm when stationary?

while you can let the idle run the car, its not great for the clutch, driveshaft or gearbox to do it too much due to the strain it transfers back through everything... But, in me mk1 octy diesel i can pootle along at 28mph in 5th on the idle even on some shallow gradients. Great for fuel economy, but not good mechanically...

I'm not sure about this. A clutch is most strained when it's slipping; and the torque shoved through the driveshaft and gearbox are generally (neglecting air and rolling resistance) proportional to acceleration -- I think booting it (or any brisk acceleration) would put a much larger strain on the drivetrain.

Just rang up Lawries to cancel  my appointment, explained the non Green Tech cars could be started without the clutch depressed, did not seem particulary intrested, just cancelled the booking and that was it.

The IAM teaches to depress the clutch on starting, but this is more about contingency in case you've failed to take the car out of gear (or your gear linkage has failed). However, it is a bit of a trade-off as to whether you might, ever-so-slightly, wear the clutch out.

To clutch in or out when starting, that is the question!.

The other one I've heard refers to reducing the load (and wear) on the starter mechanism. I don't know to what quantified extent the driven plate and gearbox input shaft would actually add to the overall load of starting an engine -- any engineers in the know?

Otherwise, do what it says in the manual.

Every car I've had I've always started with the clutch depressed anyway dating back to the 80,s [emoji106]

Well it does say on page 65 of the owners manual the clutch MUST be depressed when starting the car but, does not say the car will NOT start if you do not depress the clutch so is there a fault or not?.Can only ask other Sport owners to try their cars next time they start up and report back.

My wife's Mii 75ps Sport starts without pressing the clutch.

I didn't even think about it, I get her keys whilst she loading her handbag and all the other things women do, open drivers door reach in and insert keys and start. Don't even get into the car at that stage as she's still not ready so I clear all the windows by which time she arrives.  :giggle:
