Clutch In Or Out?

Featured Replies

Just noticed this morning I can start my car without depressing the clutch, anyone else with this?.

Pretty much standard on current VW group cars with manual transmission. I know the Superb 2, Octavia MK3 and VW Golf MK6/7 need the clutch pressed to start on the engine.

If I take my foot off the clutch my engine stops

Just found by accident this morning, forgot to put the clutch in,turned the key and hey presto! the engine started, would presume there is a microswitch jammed in some where.

Car is booked in at A Lawries on the 21' November, abit strange for Lawries, this was the earliest they could see the car normaly it would be 'bring it in next week sometime'.Did agree that it is a stuck switch, have had a quick look at the clutch pedal but could not see a switch of any description.

Haven't Lawries still got their big site rebuild on the go?

Well it does say on page 65 of the owners manual the clutch MUST be depressed when starting the car but, does not say the car will NOT start if you do not depress the clutch so is there a fault or not?.Can only ask other Sport owners to try their cars next time they start up and report back.

Mine won't start without the clutch depressed....75 Elegance Greentech.

I think Stormchaser might be right in that the Sport does not need the clutch in on starting but the Stop/Start cars do.

My Black Edition starts without the clutch depressed!

I think that proves the point then there is no fault after all, crisis averted!!.

Also another thing with the clutch, you don't need the accelerator to get moving (this appears the same in other models, my mum's fabia estate doesn't necessarily need the accelerator to get moving) if your on level ground just ease the clutch up and the car will start rolling you to 5mph, I believe this is the same if you wanted to go a higher speed so after making it to first gear and 5mph just pop it into second and ease of the clutch again, although I haven't tried that part

You learn something new every day,you are right have just tried mine and works as described, was waiting for the car to stall and it gently moved forward, same in reverse.

Just don't try it on a 20% hill incline :P

SWMBO's 62 plate SE does not need the clutch depressed to start it.

My Octavia Vrs has to have the clutch depressed, it tells you on the maxidot.

Letting the clutch out and the engine taking over is part of anti stall.

But on nearly any car you can do it, even on my 1995 Defender I can get up to 3rd gear on the level on tickover, it is basic clutch control really.

Well ECU tries to keep stable idling. No wonder if Citigo do it also when clutch is out. Almost every fuel injected cars does the same last three decades. Bosch Motronic did it in the 80's. So nothing new I would say. :giggle:

I'm fairly sure this is the case - a trait of the start stop cars.

It's got me wondering with stop/start cars. Is it just those that have this clutch click?

Is it because of the switch?

Mine has never had it and it's all silky smooth at 16K now [emoji4]

I could be totally wrong.

Stop/start here, clutch needs depressing to start and no clutch click noise........try saying that when your :cocktail: :p

I once had a van that I could stick in second gear set it off at a walking pace, get out and follow it up an hill. Always used to amuse folk.

Don't worry it was off road, it was an Austin Cambridge van (god I'm old) ........Who got on this subject anyway

Is this news, being able to let the clutch up only to move the car? I was taught to do that on my first driving lesson back in 2004. Is this not standard practice, to teach people you don't need to rev the nuts off the engine with the clutch half up to manoeuvre?

Nope, my instructor never taught me, although I did learn in a Peugeot.. :wonder:
