Pretty certain VDE is either speech recognition or text to speech in German. Do you get speech recognition on the Amundsen (voice control)?

If so, this latest update from Skoda may have broken it, probably best to copy your back up of your SD card to the card then overwrite with this update, rather than formatting and starting from fresh (assuming you have the VDE folder on the original card in the first place, if not, nothing to worry about!)

  • Yup - combined with The Unarchiver to unzip directly to a USB stick, and BlueHarvest to clean the crap that OS X dumps onto the USB stick.  All worked a treat (see previous post for details).

  • Gah.  The topic title has changed... it was just for Columbus, didn't realise it had changed!  My sincerest apologies   as I think it was I who confused things, not you.

  • Only took just over an hour to download for me too. JJ if you stopped looking at dodgy car porn sites at the same time it might download a bit quicker!

I think it may have limited speech recognition. TBH I have never tried it so am not really sure.

I'll test it tomorrow to see if it works or not.

Just had a thought - you can't add files to the card as there are md5 checksum hashes of the content, so you have to go with the full package Skoda provide.

Seems odd a folder is missing though ...........

Well that didnt work for long. After 15 mins the unit crashed and I ended up in Wolfsburg yet again after applying a map update.

Didn't get as far as being able to test voice.

Luckily I had my trusty old TomTom with me.

Further investigation will have to wait until I m back home on Tuesday.

It appears to be slightly different - a folder is missing in the v045  version, but the map data on the surface appears the same.

I would download the v045 version if you have already downloaded the v044. It wouldn't unpack with 7zip for me, but WinRAR worked fine.

Odd, but my 7zip didn't succed in unpacking the v044, either.

I followed your advice and extracted with winRar, but I'm a bit shy of writing the original SD card.

Did you experience the same 7zip issue on v044 version, too?

Edited by Genoa1893

I experienced problems with 7zip and the 044 version. Got lot of errors when deconpressing. The built in decompression in Windows 8.1 worked though (apparantly at least).

Don't know what Skoda does to the ZIP archive causing all these problems.

They make a right mess of this updating procedure don't they!

Indeed!

Seems like this isn't exactly top priority at Skoda.

How hard can it be to archive some files and make them available for download?

I must admit, i'm reluctant to download anything until I notice any glaring errors on the map it's currently running. I don't think it's worth the risk (or hassle).

FWIW, Two weeks ago I sent a query into Skoda Head Office. Today I received this reply:

Dear Mr. Bill,

We have received your letter describing your difficulties with Amundsen Maps downloading.

We apologize on behalf of the Škoda Auto Company that the downloading didn’t work. Now it should be fixed.

Please, check it and give us the feedback.

We thank you for your suggestion and would like to assure you that it will serve us for a careful monitoring of Škoda vehicles of our clients and the services provided by our partners.

Returned home, reformatted card and reloaded the files from the link you provided.

Ths time it appears to work OK and the Amundsen unit has not crashd (so far!).

Regarding the vde sub-folder. Have now tried the voice recognition and it still appears to work. So what the files in the vde folder are for remains a mystery!

And now with 7zip no longer working the update process is becoming an even bigger faff.

Just tried the link on navigation.com (which the Skoda UK site redirects you to) and downloaded the update ok - except you have to use their own downloader which is helpfully written in Czech. Had to be unzipped with WinRAR which is a bit of a pain as this seems only to be available on a paid for/trial basis. Their site does not tell you which unzip software should be used which is also unhelpful.

I've had a look at this today and the downloader will actually extract the files to the SD card for you. If you haven't formatted the card first, it will also ask you if you want to delete the existing files.

The bad news is that it doesn't seem to want to let you extract files to a disk directory and the extraction process seems to be taking a looooooonnnnnngggg time.

Odd, because I get the downloaders in English for both Amundsen and Columbus!

The Amundsen one extracts to the SD card fine, but takes a long time using the downloader.

They have cocked up the Columbus downloader though as it extracts the entire archive to a sub-folder on the SD card.

Come on Skoda - sort it out!

I got the Czech downloader...  was a case of..what does this button do??  lol

I don't follow this. The downloader I used is in Czech only. Are we using the same link?

From the navigation.com website I can only download a single zip file. Which I then have to unzip using WinRAR. I cannot see how to unzip any files directly from the website.

BTW to other posters - I would strongly recommend NOT extracting such large files direct to a SD card. I have found this significantly increases the unzip time, and can also increase the chance of file errors. On my PC it only takes about 10 minutes to download the zip file, and then about 2 minutes to unzip on the HDD.

You then enter your VIN and download an executable that automatically downloads and unpacks the file for you.

BTW I'm using the update portal where you have to enter the VIN. I don't get a choice of files - it automatically knows its for an Amundsen and downloads the correct zip file.

The portal is incorrect. It implies that the files are the June 2014 edition (which they are not), and they can be unzipped using 7zip (which they can't).

Nothing new there - attention to detail doesn't seem to be a strong point at the moment in regards to the update process

Amundsen

Edit:

Looks like the Amundsen has been updated and the downloader now works:

I had to use WinRAR to unpack it, 7zip didn't see it as a valid archive. It appears to be slightly different to the v044 link I posted originally.

At 12hrs download time, ive decided Miss Amundsen can go without an update this time

Wow - I can download the Amundsen file in about an hour!

It did eventually reduce as I left it, but it was still 4hrs after a hour or 2. I'll give it a go another time.

It wasn't car porn. I was looking see where I could get a zebra onesy. That caused loads of dodgy Sheffield porn sites to pop up

The Sheffield porn sites have Zebra Spandex Onesy's on them. And big hair.
