Fogged Up Windows That Time Of Year - Any Ideas

Featured Replies

Mine was really bad last year to the extent that you could see water run down the inside through the condensation on the windscreen, even on one occasion forming ice on the inside which is a real pain to clear. I could figure out were it was coming from as the boot vents were clear and no leakage around the seals or door membranes. I used two 1kg Air Dry packs in the car, one of the dash and the other on the parcel shelf, to try to keep it under control but these needed to be dried out every couple of weeks due to the amount of moisture they were collecting.

I noticed earlier this year that the windscreen scuttle wasn't clipped in correctly and re-seated it, so far it's not been bad this year but the car still takes a while to clear even a small amount of condensation so I might use the Air Dry packs again just to help out the the pathetic heating system.  I really miss my Mondeo and wish I never part-ex'd for this car. It used to be a case of get in the car start the engine and the heated front and rear screen would come on automatically and clear the windows, within a minute you could drive off with perfectly clear screens.

The MkII is damp by design.

Mine isn't damp ;)

This morning I used cold water to deice the screen and didn't have any condensation at all. When it's not iced up, I normally get a light mist that forms as I get in but clears within a minute or two...

Same here - it mists up a bit but no condensation as such and no real issues clearing it...   this morning was fine too and it was well below freezing last night.

Just because I can, I keep the aircon on all the time. it has a drier so regardless of the weather the humid air is dried never a problem for me at all.

My aircon is on all the time but it can only do so much.

I was suffering badly a few weeks back but a combination of cleaning the windows, new Pollen filter and 2 x 1KG bags of Silica seems to have calmed it down. I have one in the boot and one in the front. It hasn't sorted it out completely but now I only have to wipe my windscreen down once a week instead of daily. I've stopped using the Aircon also as some people on here claimed it could make it worse.

If you have a garage, use it! Best solution by far and your car will thank you for it....

I drive 20k miles a year. In the winter, apart from turning the air con on once every week or two for 30mins to keep the bearings in the compressor lubricated, it is always off till the weather gets really hot in a good summer. With our summers maybe the air con is not on very often then either!! My pollen filter does get changed more frequently than is really necessary though. Bad condensation seems to be a problem with a lot of your vehicles, but for some reason not with my car. Could it be my frequent long journeys with the heater on fully dries out the car? So every morning there may not be enough moisture left in the car to cause any real condensation.

It varies by car, some are fine, some better than others but there are plenty of cars on here that are damp by design. There are simply too many threads on the issue for it to be dismissed. A good portion of those threads were from members who were new to the Octavia and commenting on how much more susceptible the Octavia is to excessive condensation than their previous cars, me included.

All cars mist up from time to time, especially at this time of year but I noticed it a lot more on both my MkII Octavia's, an estate and a hatch.

Granted there has to be a reason for it and that reason is simple, moisture is getting into the car somewhere and isn't been effectively expelled. I have been through the usual suspects, wet shoes/clothes, saturated or blocked pollen filter, opening the boot more slowly, replacing door seals, checking for leaks, blocked scuttle trays etc. all with minimal effect. Those that spend quite a bit of time on here will know about the common water ingress problems due to the frequency that they are reported. I'm sure Skoda didn't deliberately design the car to allow rain water or washer fluid to enter the cabin but unfortunately due to the design of some components it does seem to happen on some cars...

Door seals that hold water

Ineffective drain holes on the boot seal

Weak rear washer feed

Premature failures of rear wiper motors (hatchback where the washer nozzle is integrated into the wiper arm)

Rear light cluster seal failures

Blocked sunroof drain pipes

Water running into the boot when it is opened

Wet pollen filters

Loose / missing plastic seals in the spare wheel well

This list isn't exhaustive but pretty substantial. Our new MkIII appears to be much improved, although this is it's first winter.

Another user of pingi here, I use this one:

Also when close to home I turn the heaters off and when I arrive home I will leave the drivers door open for a minute or so to let cold air in to the car / hot air escape.
