Running in - manual gearbox

Featured Replies

Does anyone who has had a Mk. 3 [manual ] from new have any comments on any changes (i.e. due to running in) becoming evident after, say, a few thousand miles?

Gear change seems just a little notchy at times, and I'm wondering if this is something others have noted and whether it tends to smooth out after a while?

I only find the first to second change notchy, but I think that 2nd is a bit high geared and so the gap in the ratios between those two is a bit broad.

I have done about 3000 miles and I think it has improved, or I have slowed down my change at lower revs to compensate.

Occasionally when I have had to rev above 4k rpm in first, the change to second then seems a lot quicker/less notchy.

The 5 speed manual on my old 1.9d manual was definitely more smooth and a better spread of ratios as well.

Can't say I have noticed much change in mine over the last 11,000 miles. May have been slightly notchy when I first picked it up but it doesn't seem to be now :)

My Manual grear box is quite notchy and sometimes difficult when coming back down the box

( Octavia MKIII TDi Vrs 63 plate )

Mines pretty notchy going between first or second. Second seems to miss the synchro a lot too.

Best gearbox I've owned for feel - very smooth after 12k miles, not noticed a change since new.

H'mm........I wonder if it might need an adjustment, or maybe a clutch adjustment. It is variable, I'll give it a few more miles!

No issues on mine.

No change on mine in 25,000km.
I would agree the change from 1st to 2nd feels quite notchy but doesnt really cause problems with engagement.

Drive it like you just stole it and you won't notice the notchyness.

Amen Brother!!!

i occasionally after a long motorway run, find getting from 6th to 5th a bit notchy, i dont know whether the mk3 has a different remote shifter design to the mk2, as with all transverse set ups, the gear changes are not going to be as smooth as a rwd with a direct gear selector, if yours is excessivly stiff take it back as there may be an issue

I might get them to give an opinion when they check out the oil filter recall job.

It isn't terrible, just occasionally noticeable. I don't know if there is any kind of adjustment possible.
