Overheating!

Featured Replies

Hi folks, here's a slightly weird one. A week or so ago the temperature gauge on my MK1 Fabia started to creep up above the middle & got to about 3/4 before I got to work & turned the engine off. I lifted the bonnet & slowly loosened the header tank cap to release the pressure & loads of coolant spewed out. On checking when it had cooled down the level was just above minimum & the car drove home without incident. I drove it for a couple more days before I had chance to buy some more coolant & top up the level & it was fine & has been ever since. I was wondering if any of you knowledgable may have any ideas as to the cause. I was thinking maybe the thermostat had a hissy fit & stuck temporarily & has corrected itself, but that is a bit of guesswork as I can't think of any other reason.

Mpi BTW.

You could well be right with the thermostat sticking, as later you said no problem.(hissy fit ?) it that the same as throwing a wobbly..LOL

Suggest change the thermostat, as winter is coming and you need reliability.

+1 for this course of action.

Easy enough fix then, apart from those blasted sprung hose clips.

It's just a pity the 'stats on these are fifty quid a shot for a genuine one.

May used a pattern one as they're about half the price, previous one has lasted two years I don't know if a genuine one is any better.

I find water pump pliers work OK on those clips.

No thermostat is better than a sticking one..

Mind you, your gonna be mighty cold inside cabin, and do ensure anti-freeze density is checked for really cold/freezing weather..

Once off put new jubilee clips replacements back-on, only pence and a lot less removal frustration next time..LOL

Anti-freeze is all good after topping up & have still got a litre & a bit spare.

Good idea about the hose clips.

One of those extendable magnetic pick up tools is handy too in case one of the bolts falls down behind the engine. Mines got a light too. :-)
