Help! Lost gears

Featured Replies

Hi, I've lost 1st, 3rd and reverse. Got home ok, but now 2nd and 4th feel like not engaging (although the actually do)

Sudden linkage problem? Or worse...!!??

Could be the linkage or the fork in the box has gone

Sent from my Galaxy S5

Could well be a retaining clip has gone AWOL off gear cable end on top of box allowing one to lift off the gear linkage.

It's the linkage, something has broken, get someone to move the gear stick while you watch the linkage operating.

Sounds like retaining clip, this happened to me recently on the way to a car show ;)

Thanks for replies. I'm about to investigate further. I had a quick glance and things looked in place but I think gears are selecting ok when I waggle the mech above gearbox so assume something has gone amiss in the linkage

Hi, ok I think I know what's happened. I will need the new counterweight part which is splined and goes onto the shaft sticking out of the 'box. I suspect it's retaining bolt may have worked slightly loose causing the splines to wear. It no longer wants to grip the gearbox shaft, the splines worn.

Obviously need to source one. Hopefully I can get one from a breakers

Not sure if there is maybe only one way it can fit on so as selector alignment is going to be easier? Unless I get one from another car and can see (for example if car in neutral) where the lever sits

Any help still appreciated but it's good my gearbox is ok!

Not been finding it easy to source this linkage with counterweight part. Can anyone advise which models should be same 'box/part.

It looked maybe just a skoda logo stamped onto the part but should any vw's be the same?

Thanks

To try and help others who may experience this problem on their 5 speed Skoda Fabia. Mine being a 2001 1.4 Mpi. I rapidly lost the ability to select gears. Everything actually looked ok and intact but I discovered what was wrong.

My issue was the first piece of selector mechanism onto the gearbox's gear selector shaft (the lever incorporates weighty metal piece) rounding off it's splines, then slipping on the selector shaft. Note: this was actually difficult to see because looking down onto it, it appeared to be working correctly. It was only after some head scratching and playing about with it I realised the lever was not actually turning the gear selector rod.

I suspect the single securing bolt on this must have worked slightly loose. This part moves up and down and fore and aft, so it seems likely the securing bolt loosening off a bit could easily have caused undue wear on the metal splines. Luckily the splines on the gearbox shaft side were ok, it was the splines on the part which became worn.

The part number is 6Y0 711 051. It is available from Skoda. Under £40 GBP. It can only fit onto the shaft at one angle due to an intentional missing spline at one point. I was pleased about this as I was unsure what angle it should sit on at.

You will need to release the two selector cables and remove the 13mm bolt holding the lever on.

This video shows everything you need to know. The mechanism is actually slightly different looking but for all intents and purposes it is very helpful. It is necessary to follow this to get the gear selection mechanism set up properly
