Heater/Fan issue..

Featured Replies

Okay, 12 months ago, I had the old issue of no fan working in positions 1,2 and 3. Only position 4 working.. the heater resistor pack was replaced.. AU130 Heater Blower Resistor [ASIN: B00HRLJJZ2]

It recently went again so I had managed to source another.. this got fitted on Tuesday this past week and by Saturday (yesterday) to my utter annoyance has gone again (I don't believe the part itself was at fault).

Naturally I'm concerned there's a fault elsewhere that has caused this, but what exactly I haven't a clue and I'm hoping some kind soul on here would be able to assist in the diagnosis.

Wiring issue?  Fan motor issue?

The only thing I will say, is when the fan is on position four, it can sometimes sound like it's struggling a bit, like the odd squeaking noise the speed doesn't drop, but you do get this squeak sometimes quite prolonged.. and the headlights do dip a bit in brightness when I have switched it on to help clear the windscreen..

I definitely need an answer as driving to and from work on cold mornings with the windows open to help keep the screen clear is becoming intolerable.. and I'm now tired of it..

any help appreciated!

Assuming you've checked/changed the pollen filter, so the thing isn't trying to blow through a blocked up thing?  I guess you've also checked that there isn't leaf litter or other debris choking up the fan blades?

If both of those things are ruled out I'd be thinking it's time for a replacement blower fan motor; its brushes may be worn down to nearly nothing, or its bearings may have started to fail.

Thanks for the response..

Ahem.. well no I've not checked/changed the pollen filter..nor the air filter recently.. so I may have to have a look at that..

But the blower fan motor blade brushes sounds like a possible as well.. I had to have the alternator replaced last year for a similar reason..

thanks.. I'll get those checked out.. and look for a price on a replacement fan motor just in case..

Since the topic is remotely related to my issue, I will state it in here. My car refuses to blow really hot air even after 3 hours of driving. The thermostat has been replaced, the coolant level is perfect and I don't know where to start with. I am starting to think that the interior radiator might be the problem. Is there any valve that I should also check, maybe for some reasons, the previous owner had it partially disabled? Don't get me wrong, it blows warm air, but not really hot enough, compaired with other cars. I've tried with ac on and off also and it does the same thing ...I didn't measure the air temp, but my hand sensor tells me is somewhere around 25 C, even if the heat switch is on full red.

If you want to heat.. AC should be off.. but then.. I didn't think the heater temp goes much above 24C anyway.. not sure why you would want it any hotter than that.. there would probably a safety set by the Heater Control Unit.. I remember the HCU failing on my car under warranty and blasted out hot air like a furnace and nearly burnt my hand off.. I'd say yours is working fine.. any hotter and you might start warping the plastic in the air vents.. you wouldn't want that now..

Definitely check the cabin air filter, mine had a massive amount of leaves in it when I removed it and replaced it along with my blown resistor pack (expect to have to hoover up a bunch of crud in your passenger footwell afterwards)

To Alexandru, my heater was absolutely pathetic, maybe 2 degrees above whatever cold air was coming into the car, I did a full coolant change and flushed it with some coolant flush but the temperature only went up a little. I'm currently doing a head gasket change and while I had easy access to the heater matrix pipes, thought I'd give backflushing the heater matrix a go (flushing through the reverse pipe, pushing out the crud that's been pushed into it forward wise) and there was so much sludge and gunge that came out of it I couldn't tell you. Flushing it forward only pushes the gunge in more if it's stuck, give a backflush a try if you can get to the pipe. I haven't got the cylinder head back on yet but with the amount of crap that came out of the heater matrix, I'm expecting to be in a tropical paradise compared to what it was like before.

Ac is always on in my car, winter or summer. In the winter its on mostly because of the humidity inside the car. But since these cars have climatic, maybe it should work also. As I mentioned in the previous post, I've tried it with both settings, ac on and off, and tbh, the difference isn't noticeable. My Matiz blows hotter air after 5 minutes than my Fabia after 3 hours, driven in the same conditions.
