Read only file problem

Featured Replies

I'm in the process of changing our server at work. We're changing from Windows Server 2000 to SBS 2003. All has gone OK so far, apart from the fact that all the files on the server (Word and Access files) seem to be read only :( As you can imagine, this is not an ideal situation :mad:

I've gone into the folder properties and unchecked the read only boxes. Trouble is, they won't stay unchecked!

I burnt the files on the original server on to CD and copied from this onto the new server. Could this be where the problem lies?

late night me thinks!!!!!!!

me, i wish i had a server, right pain dealing with 12 million records in access, update query takes about four hours and the deadlines been missed three times now due to issues!!!!!

12 million records in access

Rob.

yep, thats only half of it!!!!!

its now 10pm, ive got till 9am to get it done and we cant miss the deadline as its going external!!!!

Writing update queries to update the main table as other ways balloon the file size over the limit, you know i'm gonna make a mistake and miss the deadline!!!!!!

Its three million in the main table but 4 files each with 3million records in plus three or four other files with as many in again.

Its not going to work but i have no other choice than to keep trying!

Are you sure they are read only?

Not sure about 2000, but 2003 seems to be tri state where read only is concerned for folders.

If i take a file in a folder and make it read only, then get the properties of the folder i get a box for read only which looks as if it is checked, but with a square rather than a tick. If i click this, it turns off, click again i get a tick, click again, back to the box. Whilst the box is unchecked, i click apply, i get the "apply to folder or sub folders" box. I make sure folders is checked and click ok. Now I click ok to get rid of the properties. If I then get the properties back, the read only box is back to the "box", but If I look at the file, it is no longer read only.

Does that make sense?

EDIT: When you copy from a cd, they will appear as read only

Copy them first, then change the ownership back to whomever you want as the owner, set permissions back. Should be ok

As for access - that's a fair bunch of records you've got there, rather on the limit for Access

I tend to favor an application called secure copy... its great for moving servers and data as it has options for duplicating permissions, users and the share structure too..

Folder properties always show "read only", try it on an ntfs formatted windows XP pc and they are the same. You need to check the attributes of the files inside the folder, chances are during the migration the permissions got screwed. I assume this is the same server that has just been upgraded. If you are using a different server, what I have done is backup using a backup tool the folders on the original server and restore onto the new, that way the permissions are preserved.

Had a similar problem a couple of years back with access - 3 tables holding 200k records each. forever dying and needing restored because update queries seemed to fry the thing. Anyway, in the end I created 3 copies of the database, each with a third of the total number of records in each table. then ran the updates on 3 seperate machines before merging the lot back together AFTER the update.

I feel your pain...

Nothing like using the right tool for job, eh? Have you thought of using Linux/MySQL? You might even be able to take days off!
