What mpg do you get?

Featured Replies

This applies to vrs octavias only. What is your average mpg when driving sensibly?

Mine seems seriously low at 29mpg and this is with lightweight alloys on but 225 profile. I drove 5 miles in 5th at 40mph, no traffic, no lights and only managed 28mpg.

I remember when I had the car new 2 years ago mpg was always around 35mpg at its lowest.

When I had my Vrs estate..... around town 24-27mpg normal longish run 35 mpg if I was lucky, driving like a granny at around 65 to 75 mph on the M4-5 44mpg

:iagree:

Don't do much town driving, but if I driven 100 miles (most motorway) at 90, the computer will show 33ish. Same journey at 70 = 44.

(54plate with 17k miles)

am i not allowed with my 4x4 :(

but for information purposes my jabba'd 4x4 with the boost controller down lowest(around 180bhp) and diving sensibly i get 30-35mpg, driving like a tit gets me a prett good gpm figure though :)

Did a long trip on Saturday.....60-80mph on an A road.....trip comp gave 35mpg.

Boost controller set to half way...225/18'' tyres.

On motorway trips at a steady 80mph trip will give 38-40mpg.

The main thing is keeping a constant speed.

Usually get 32mpg going to work...mixture of A and B roads with various gradients over 24 miles.

definitly gotta keep the speed, any idea where big K has gone? i fancy a bit of CC action :)

CC doesnt actually improve the MPG as much as using your eyes ;) I can get high 40's by thinking ahead etc. and lifting off long before 60->30 speed limit changes and junctions.

Otherwise I agree with the above.

Not bad DT...Use a longer test route. If slightly uphill then the car will be working more etc.

My overall milage from 30,000 miles is 29mpg, assuming the computer understands everything.

On most runs at the moment, using track tyres I get 30ish, drops to about 7 for most slip roads though

My average is showing 22

All my driving is on fun country roads though :D

Im sure when I had the car new it was rarely under 35mpg. So 29/28mpg seems ok for town/urban driving? I also roll the car in neutral when I can.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it actually uses more fuel to roll the car in neutral than to keep it in gear....

Or maybe I'm making it up - not too sure

Called "overrun" or something...if the engines out of gear, it will be using fuel to turn itself over. If it's in gear, then the momentum of the car will actually turn the engine over, so it'll reduce the fuelling to the engine to take account of this and hence use less fuel.

I must drive like an old duffer these days! Just moved to a new workplace and with a 60 mile a day commute (40 miles of B road and 20 of motorway) I'm averaging 42.7mpg. Thats over the last 3000 miles. Before I changed jobs I was a shade over 40mpg on 40 miles a day. I must admit I am driving with economy at the top of my list but I'm very impressed with those figures for a 1.8t.

Does the car actually know how much fuel it is using or does it calculate it from pre-defined tables based on RPM and engine load etc??

I assumed rolling the car uses less fuel because of less revs. When i switch to current mpg when rolling the mpg shoots right up helping to increase the average mpg?

My average is around 31 to 32 mpg - that's mostly town driving and I usually have the climate in ECON mode. I also only use Shell Optimax fuel.

Fuel usage isn't directly related to the revs though. If you left it in gear, you'd probably see the fuel usage go to --- rather than just a high number...

My average is currently showing as 33.5, mostly short drives eg. 7 or 8 miles, with a few 130 mile round trip work runs thrown in for good measure. Seems to have gone down lately, since fuel prices went up, used to be around the 35-38 mark, although could be because my tires were running a little under- inflated for a while without me noticing. Generally use ordinary unleaded unless its the start of the month!

Rolling the car in neutral is illegal afaik as you aint in full control of the vehicle. I do, however, when I can, run in neutral as I also thought it conserved fuel. I'm confused now...so if the car is in gear it will use less petrol than in neutral? Surely fuel is also needed to keep the engine running even if momentum is turning the engine. Why this would be less than in neutral I dont know:confused:

Imagine if you will a simple bicycle...if you push the pedals, the wheel turns. If you then go down a hill, the wheels will then turn the pedals (I did say it was a simple bicycle!). This will then move your legs, and most people would have the intelligence to stop applying force to the pedals, as there's no need...just as most cars will know to reduce the fuelling if there is enough force from the wheels to turn the engine over...

why get a car wit air-con and not use it

i have seen no impact what so ever on mpg from having my aircon on so mine is on costant :)

It doesn't half sap your power though ;)

Dries my smokes out, meaning I get rather high from crispy tobacco inferno's, thus I have to open the window :D

Don't use it all the time, maybe once a week. It will effect your power over not using it. All windows open is about the same effect.

All that said I run my xennons all the time, sucking power to the alternator.

Running in AUTO does reduce power and increases fuel consumption. I put it on when I need/want to but typically just use ECON. It is called ECON for a reason after all

I usually get 31-32mpg out of mine  - not bad for a 1.8T but nowhere near the Skoda quoted figures of 35.3 mpg (combined cycle).

With 'enthusiastic' driving the fuel economy drops significantly
