Driveshaft Advice required

Featured Replies

hi all

It seems I have finally got to the bottom of my annoying and persistent low speed knocking noise, I replaced pretty much every suspension component on the front of the car and gave up hope of ever resolving the knock so took the car for four wheel alignment today and within 1 minute of it being in the air the guy said your offside drive-shaft knuckle is leaking and that's causing the knock!!! so.....I am a little confused, do I need to replace the full driveshaft or just a gaitor? do I replace both sides of the car or just the offside? can anyone give me a steer on which parts are required please? also if there are any brisky discounts on the ECP or GSF sites?

Many thanks in advance

A mechanic friend of ours very rarely replace a knocking driveshaft, he usually disassembles the joint and then literally pushes the joints through a pot of grease, reassembles with a new boot and away they go.

Certainly saves a few quid, not tried it myself but will do when and if mine wear out!

This sounds like my kind of option :)

thanks mate

If its knowing then u need to buy the whole joint kit

If it wasn't noking and the gaitor was split then a new boot would be fine

You can do what is advised above but the nook will soon be back depending on how bad it is at the moment

Best way to check is fully lock the wheel and go round on a circle, the faster the nock the worser the joint

Or you can just find somewhere that re conditions drive shafts but u will be without a car for a couple of houres

Cheers, my mechanic says that a split CV boot will not cause the knock I am hearing??? this has really peed me off as I was hoping this was going to be the end of it!!! I get a slight click on full right lock which is separate to the low speed know i am also getting.....GRRR

It doesn't directly make the knock noise, but it is the root cause of the knocking. If you had discovered the split boot way back when it first split (it will have been split for a while), you could have replaced the boot with new grease and that would have been the end of it.

But when the boot splits and is undiscovered, a lot of the grease gradually leaks out and water and grit gets in, causing the joint to wear severely resulting in knocking or clicking noises. The only fix is to replace the whole CV joint in question. Annoying, but that's the way it goes with split boots sometimes. It's quite hard to spot a split.....especially if the split isn't around the whole circumference.

If it's anything like a Corsa, the CV boots are more plastic than rubber and prone to slip off not split.

The grease fouls the brake discs, the brakes stop working and the CV joint wears prematurely as mentioned previously due to water and dirt ingress.

You cannot successfully re clip these type of boot as they are so stiff.

Have you checked for a worn/dry strut top bearing?

That can make a click on full lock.

doom and gloom!! the car is going to the garage on Friday so will wait and see what is said, I was hoping it would be a case of replace the boot and happy days but the knock I have just sounds and feels like it is coming from that exact area so I guess I will need to have the whole joint replaced :(

The cv joints go quite quickly once the boot splits as Ive gone through 2 already with the first one being the garage unable to secure the boot properly and all the grease leaked out. I paid £120 for cv joint and boot replacement last year.

update*

I had the CV boot replaced yesterday and the joint is now packed with fresh new grease (had not lost very much at all) it has not got rid of the light knock I have, I really don't know what is causing it...the last ditch attempt is to replace FARB bushes perhaps even the whole bar....

Can anyone recommend a proper suspension guru? I am in Berkshire but only have general mechanics who are good at a bit of everything but dont seem to be able to solve this damn issue

It's not a worn engine mount causing the knock is it?

did the guy check if the cv joint is damaged or not, as if it is damaged repacking it with grease and fitting a new boot won't solve the problem

He did check the joint and said its all good....

Could be an engine mount....or perhaps sub frame? i read somewhere there is a fix kit for the subframe from the states

I have some spare driveshafts from a 2007 vrs tdi if they fit?

Thanks Rob, I have the car going into J-Tech in Reading in Jan to diagnose properly as up to this point it has been either me or a friend (mechanic) replacing parts but not getting to the actual cause of it.....on the plus side my car is basically brand new (suspension wise) :)

I will of course be back in touch if it is the drive shaft!!!
