Sticking starter motor

Featured Replies

I think I have narrowed my problem with my fabia 51 16v start up noise (in another post) to a sticking starter motor (overrun?) Is there a DIY fix for this does anyone know?

I had this occur a while back (a squeaky/whirry noise after releasing the key from the cranking position?).

I bought a 2nd hand starter to swap in, but while I was waiting for that to arrive I took off, cleaned up, and re-fitted the main, high-current wiring connections to the starter.

The noise stopped happening.

I have absolutely no idea whether I fixed it, or it fixed itself; but it's never happened since, and we're probably a year on now.

If you do try this, please be careful and disconnect battery negative before you disconnect anything else. Starter wiring is dangerous stuff if you accidentally short it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I`ve ordered a Haynes manual to see if I can do it myself. New starter seems to be about £70

My started kept screeching/sticking.

Took it off and left it to soak in oil for about half an hour, drained the excess off then refitted. it fixed it probably for about 6-7months

Too much waste with modern cars isn't there, what happened to taking it apart and repairing it

repairing it? lol it was a bodge in the purest sense of the word.

A guy at skoda told me there is a brass bush which gets hot, cracks and then is able to jam the starter in the out position. hence the screech, all the oil did was lubricate it so it wasnt so bad.

Off topic, What was quite funny was i used to park in near the entrance to my training centre during my first year of the apprenticeship, every time i started it, and it screeched, everyone in the carpark looked straight at me lol. They were gob smacked the first time i started it up and it was quiet :D
