What options for my new VRS.

Featured Replies

Looking to order a new VRS in the next week or so. I think I fancy the petrol over the diesel. I have had diesels for the last 7 years so fancy a change.

What I am struggling with is should I get DSG or manual. Enjoy using manual gearboxes but everyone has good things to say about DSG.

Also wondering if I should get leather. The cloth looks a bit shiny to me. Anyone got any opinions on full leather or how the cloth seats have been to use.

Also I hope I like it as much as I like my 2009 VRS ( diesel) as I really do enjoy driving it.

Any advice would be welcome.

Kind regards

John.

Test drive. DSG either works for you or doesn't.

I test drove a DSG petrol, read the available review and compared the test drive with my MkII manual TFSI and  plumped for another manual petrol hatchback, they're huge.  Not sure about the leather but the cloth seats look a bit more vulnerable than the MKII interior so I went with leather. Time will tell if I've made the right choice. The good news, if it's correct, is that my build week is only 7 weeks after placing the order. Not holding my breath. You need to have a test drive.

Love my DSG :)

Tick everything! (I have a problem)

I really like the DSG, went for my first proper wiz this afternoon (Wife's car, don't get an opportunity too often), was VERY impressed at the DSG in full manual using the paddles, immediate, smooth downshifts - no hesitation, no jerking. Much better than I thought it would be and really negates the need for a manual car IMO. And when you are not driving like a loon, pop it in D and just enjoy concentrating on the road - I'm yet to get annoyed with it for picking a stupid gear in normal driving :)

I've opted for a petrol DSG this time (currently have a mk2 manual tdi) so it's a complete change for me, also ticked many of the options!! Leather, canton, winter pack, Columbus. The dsg I test drive was excellent, I'll let you know if it was the right decision when it turns up in March 2015!

I've got a metal grey vrs tsi dsg coming with lots of toys. Coming from an edn 30 golf with DSG.

I had leather because the leather inserts on the cloth seats seem 'baggy' from new and another member has had this issue too. DSG seems to have improved since my last car. Its just a shame that the 7 speed dry clutch DSG set up can't handle more torque.

Options:- columbus, canton, kessy, front assist, HB assist, black pack, spacesaver, bluetooth plus, 5 yr warranty, winter pack, all carefully considered ;-)

John: Test drive test drive, test drive ;-)

I have a Scirocco 2.0 TSI with DSG (pretty much same engine as the petrol VRS, only a tad less power). I test drove it as a manual and a DSG, chose the DSG and I love it for most parts, but I bought our new TDI VRS as a manual..soooo go figure :D

There will be many people telling you it's good, just as many that it's bad. Just test drive it for a bit and choose. Purely from the technical side: DSG is a tad heavier, mpg a little worse (but honestly I think that doesn't matter since your right foot will be the most probable reason for bad mpg on the TSI, mine certainly is :notme: ), and the service for the DSG should be more expensive.

If you chose DSG, just hope that SKODA did the same with the Octy as VW did with the Scirocco: when you change gears up, the exhaust pops, makes me grin like a kid every time even after 5 years :sun: . (But do get some confirmation on that from the forum members)

As for the leather: I HATE leather on car seats, so I can't give an honest opinion.

Just to give an update. Test drove a petrol DSG vRS yesterday and I must admit there's not much to dislike about the DSG. Placed my order today.

2.0 TSI vRS Estate

DSG

Rally Green

Heated front and rear seats

Leather

Black pack plus with 19" extremes.

Tow bar

Spare wheel.

Looking forward to March.

Thanks for the advice.

Wow - spoilt rear seat passengers - one of the only things I left off mine!

Looking forward to March myself. Also gone for the estate tsi dsg with the 19" extremes but in metal grey. I would say it's a long wait but I do have the Blackline to enjoy until then!

Very nice spec vRS you love the 19" xtreme's they are sweet and go well with rallye green

Nice one. I went for the 19's as well. My car is available to be picked up this Saturday after ordering on Oct 20. Pretty happy with that. However as it is the work Xmas party the night before (with free booze) I'm considering waiting until Monday before I get it

That's not too long a wait. I might not get a build date until the new year.

If I like it as much as my mkII tdi vRS I will be well chuffed.

I think I was lucky. I was originally told Feb but apparently they had a ghost car on the production line (whatever that is) so my car took that slot

Looking at the newer vrs's coming through now,the fit n finish on them look far better and upmarket than my jan 14 built one, the third row of stitching and butted seams are a lot neater looking than the inchwide strip thats on my bolster edge, that seems to get caught whenever you leave the car,so things are better for the later car

I picked Ralleye Green to be different from the race blue crowd. Looking at the posters choices on this page I may not be in such a minority. I didn't believe my delivery date which seemed to good to be true, however post13 has restored my faith. Not sure what a ghost car is but I don't care as long as it matches my order. I hope it arrives quickly as predicted and that the interior is improved as per post 16, hopefully with the missing steering wheel badge fitted.

Ghost cars are factory orders placed by the dealers that have no owner yet. They often place these when build times are getting long (as it has been in recent months) - with the hope that the order they place will be picked up by someone before it is delivered. They don't tend to have all the options on but they'll pick a couple. Worse case is it becomes a demonstrator when it finally arrives at the dealers.

If I'd gone with a VRS I'd have ordered Rally Green - nothing like it around hear and my little lad would love it.

I thought I picked a random set of options so it will be interesting to see if it was a ghost car. Thanks for the info.

If you'd not gone for anything wildly different from the ghost order and it hadn't had it's build date locked in (which is normally a week or two before it actually gets built) then they could tweak it to your spec.

Whether you like the DSG or the manual better is really a matter of preference, so you should go for a test drive. I went for a couple of test drives before ordering and really liked how quick and smooth the gear changes were on the DSG, it also seemed to react to manual commands pretty much instantaneously...which was a great improvement over my current car.

As for interior I picked the alcantara option. I really like the feel of it and it should be more durable than the basic cloth option, though I hear I should be careful with clothes that might shed dye, that can then rub off on the alcantara. (I picked the light color option as well...)

My current car has all leather seats and I've pretty much got fed up with them. Sure it can add some feeling of luxury, and it's pretty easy to keep clean...but on the other hand it's really hot (like 1st degree burn hot) in the summer, doesn't really breathe either...not to mention ice cold in the winter. And it requires maintenance so it doesn't start to crack.
