Skoda Fabia Idle

Featured Replies

Right here is a bit of a topic!

Got a 2006 1.2 3 cylinder HTP skoda fabia comfort (manual) it had a misfire in cylinder two so it went back to the garage and had the following done

- New ecu

- New wiring

This didn't fix it, so back it went

- new exhaust guides

- Clean of the valves

Which solved the misfire and engine management (so far!) hasn't turned on.

Now my question is this, when the car idles, what sort of revs am i meant to be at? If in neutral and i rev to say 3000 RPM then take my foot off, the rev meter goes to 1,000rpm stays for a second then drops to about 750 (maybe less/more need to go back out to check tomorrow morning). Is this a normal thing to do?

Also the idle seems very shaky, sometimes it almost sounds like a splutter from time to time a few friends said it could be because the engine has been taken to pieces and the ECU needs time to settle in to the car.

Any suggestions? i'm taking it out on the motorway tomorrow to give it a good run, hoping the idle is just normal for 3 cylinder cars.

sounds like the idle control valve to me

Oh for god sake not more issues! Will look into that.

Forgot to mention, when the revs are at like 750rpm it stays solid, no varying revs.

still sounds like idle control valve i had a saxo vtr back in the day and when i reved that the revs slowly went back down but would hold higher than it should have been gradually got worse if that was my car thats what i'd be looking at

I'll take a video at some point, as far as running goes, seems to run super smooth which is certainly did not with the cylinder 2 misfire i had!

Well the noise i can hear is from the exhaust:

Now tell me if i'm going mad or is that an issue? Near the end of the video you can hear it splutter, that is when the car shakes. Now i know that these cars idle "lumpy" but really have no idea if this is normal.

The rev meter does not change, stays slap bang on 700rpm

It has had a new ECU fitted about 3 weeks ago, hasn't had a proper big drive yet

It has had a new head "set" so i assume head gasket

It has had 3 new exhaust guides as i had an engine misfire on cylinder 2

I have no engine management on or anything, it drives fine, just that stupid splutter!

steveo, hate to burst your bubble but most 'modern' cars (euro IV or later) don't have idle control valves because they're fly-by-wire with stepper motor throttle bodies. You'll be telling him to adjust the points next.  :D

Soo,

Is this normal for the 6v or is it yet another call to the dealer requesting my damn money back!

That sounds perfectly normal to me, it's often caused by a buildup of condensation in the exhaust system, particularly at this time of year. The only way to completely clear it is to drive the car long distance for a few hours at motorway speeds, that way the whole exhaust system will got properly hot and completely dry out. Frankly it isn't anything to worry about, pretty much every petrol engined car will have the occasional splutter at idle during the winter, if the car drives well then relax and forget the horror of the last few months, it's fixed.

Sepulchrave,

If this is truly fixed and what you say is true then i owe you a single pint my friend! Alright well i might as well have a go!  The splutter does happen every say 15 seconds or so, going to drive back to university now see if it fixed it!

Go ahead, the car will be fine, a nice long drive will do it the world of good.

Will go for a slow (to make it longer) drive on the motorway back to university then. My main worry was that at traffic lights it'd go into limp home mode again, as my wonderful clio decided to do when joining the A470, that was fun.

that sound perfectly normal due to it being cold its sucking up abit more fuel hence the splutter

Took it out for a 45 minute spin on the motorway, was still spluttering when i parked up but no engine management light (yay!!!!) i have had this car 3 months and now driven 64 miles without it dying on me!

Car is still alive yet after about 100 miles run down the motorway its still spluttering only at idle. I'm starting to wonder if the garage screwed up the timing or something or when the dealer delivered it that they ran the fuel down so much something is clogged! The entire engine shakes too (which is a common sight on the 6v but more so than usual) and it can be felt while in the car.

When it's running it runs like a dream, just makes me worry when it idles! Rev's stay constant too!
