Photo Request Please - Elegance with sports suspension and 18" Golus

Featured Replies

Poor grammar in the title!

Does anyone have a picture of their car (not an official Skoda picture) of an Elegance with the standard 17" alloys and sports suspension fitted and a picture of the car with standard suspension with the 18" Golus wheels.

I need to chose a co. car and am torn between:-

  • A 2.0 TDi Elegance Estate with 3 spoke steering wheel, sunset glas in metallic grey (steel or metal) and either the 18" wheels OR sports suspension.
  • A 2.0TDi Business SE Estate with 18" wheels, silver roof rails and window trims, 3 spoke steering wheel, sunset glass and mats!
  • A 1.6TDi Business SE Greenline III with almost every option ticked!
  • A Golf GTD in red.

The heart says Golf but I would need a roof box and a tow bar mounted bike carrier so the head is leading in saying Octavia.

Decisions, decisions.....

Steve

I don't have any pictures of what you are requesting, but just to say I absolutely love my 1.6TDi Octavia Combi. Although I don't win the sprint from the lights (and don't care really), it's a very pokey torquey engine with plenty to give.

The Golf is just simply boring IMHO and this is from a diehard VW fan, albeit having made the switch over to Skoda!

Plus I have had two lightweight MTBs with the pedals and wheels off flat packed into the boot with the seats up. Wheareas you might not wish to condense your bike that much it does demonstate the size of the boot.

The Greenline is lower than a standard car anyway (or used to be anyway happy to stand corrected), so maybe that's a strong option if you want lower.

I think if it's an Octavia, then whichever you choose won't be a wrong decision, just a different one!

:-)

Edit: Perhaps boring is a poor choice of word, common as muck would be more appropriate. Saying that I am more than sure the Golf can, and will deliver!

I had a Golf GTD for the weekend recently and it was very nice - not at all boring , understated maybe. The interior was a lovely place to sit and it went very well indeed with a nice roar under acceleration.

I am getting a 2.0TDi Business SE tomorrow for a few days.

Tough call TBH.

The Greenline 3 if you get a standard one (or at least go easy on the options) will be ridiculously cheap. Also the 110ps 1.6 TDI mated with a 6 speed box is supposed to be v good also.

If you want a big car thats nicely equipped and also a strong performer you'll not go too wrong with a 2.0 TDi Elegance, again just my view but no/light in the options dept. Its not a "fun" car but extremely competent and does exactly what it says on the tin....also not a great deal slower than a GTD in a straight line. On standard suspension and 17's its pretty good and for that kind of car does strike a good (if not outstanding) balance between handling, grip and ride quality. Sports Suspension and 18's will make it quite a bit firmer id expect.

If you want a car to make you grin (or at least get you to raise the occasional wry smile) then frankly you cant go too wrong with the GTD, after all you can fit a roof box on one and you're not looking to stick bikes in the boot by the sounds of it.

Also one other observation, unless you're dead set on an Octavia estate for whatever reason then do consider the hatch; has the same load area just not higher level due to the sloping tailgate. Still enormous and a cheaper car so will save you more in tax.

Thanks for all the input.

I think the estate looks better than the hatch.

My choice is one of these. Which would everyone choose? I I take the alloys, I will lose the sunset glass.

It's after market an option? If so may be worth pricing up the cost of having tints or buying 18" wheels. I like the golus wheels a lot and you could probably get a darker after market tint done - which could also be removed later I should think when you need to give it back. If aftermarket is not an option then I can't help. I've stuck with std 17 and no sport suspension as SWMBO has a bad back and our current A6 with sport suspension is a really bad ride on our commute every day.

Sorry my friend but if its a company car I would have to say probably neither. I just dont believe in giving the tax man any more than I have to but thats just how I operate; Im of course assuming you are UK based also.

If I had to choose between the two though id probably go Sports Suspension. Car will look better lower on 17's than at regular height on 18's, would say normal suspension on 17's is probably the happy medium. It's (sport suspension) is also a cheaper option than the wheels.

It is probably also worth noting that if your leasing outfit use some one like Kwik fit to change tyres that those nice 18's will end up scored to death after your first tyre change. Happened to two of my cars.

Looks good with the drop.

Yes, a UK tax payer.

I like my cars so as much as I begrudge every tax penny, I want to drive something I am happy with. Even if I can't have a vRS or a 330d.

Still weighing up taking the cash...

Steve

Alot lower than my Elegance on 17's with standard suspension.

The only comment I would make is make sure you drive one in your preferred config first. I find my Elegance acceptably comfortable but Im not sure I would if it were much firmer as even with standard springs and dampers the car is already on the firm side.

And indeed if youre choosing a company car and likely to be saddled with it it for 3/4 years perhaps then understand youve got to like it. Im still of the mind that if youre doing alot of miles for work (commuting or general travel) a CC is the way to go.

Grrr. Skoda have cancelled my demo tomorrow as the car has a puncture. Wtf? Surely that is a bad advert for not having a full size spare;)

Steve

I have an Elegance with sports suspension and 18" Golus.  Sorry I can't post a picture as I'm not in the same country as my car!

To be honest the drop isn't that much more than standard  - first day I had it I had to check the transport blocks weren't fitted and I actually had the sports suspension as the gap between wheel and arch looked really big (Only 15mm lower than standard) .  It doesn't do anything for the handling - still very neutral or numb thanks to the torsion beam at the rear a Golf GTD handles really well in comparisson.

I had a weeks demo in a standard car with 17's and the ride is almost identical so whichever way you go it's a purely asthetical thing.  Maybe and I mean maybe 10% better than standard, only a little harder on bumps and only a little better on bends.

Had 2 punctures in first month of ownership (1 puncture in 20 years before this!) - TPMS warned me both times and having no spare is awful - luckily I was close to kwikfit both times (tyre contract with them).

Big difference between the 1.6 and 2.0 engines.  Looking at your choices I think you would regret the 1.6 even with every toy it doesn't make up for what you'd lose out on under the bonnet.

Re-booked my demo for the 30th December. I will now have an L&K for a week!

Are the L&K seats the same as the Elegance only with the the L&K logo embossed on them, and in brown, obviously?

Steve

The panelling seams are vertical on L & K and there is a little bit of extra leather(ette) on each seat just below the headrests.

On Elegance the seams are horizontal but the shape of the seats look identical on both.

Also the electric/memory adjustable seats are standard on L & K and the lumbar support/adjustment is better.
