I need some help regarding what I've just been told

Featured Replies

I won't bore you again with this bloody no power to glow plugs crap, but..

I've just had another auto spark out who told me because it's had a recon head, new valves, 130 injectors and pump, new timing belt and sensors maybe from a different car but same engine it needs reprogrammed by skoda because the people that did the engine work can't programme whatever new sensors they might have fitted.

The guy said the glow plug relay I got is the not the problem, it's the ecu....he said the relay is only £16 but the ecu will still cut the power to it because whoever did the top end work can't programme the sensors to the ect, only skoda, and said they might do on a 10 yr old car

Is all this true

I mean, gsf, euro ect ect all sell sensors for all sorts, now you're not telling me that ever time one's fitted it had to go to a dealer to get the programmed for it

I think I've said this right

He said it'll start fine in summer but not in winter because of this, also said, don't spend anymore on it as it'll need to go to skoda to get reprogrammed, it's the only thing that'll fix it

PD or CR engine, the PD engine requires the injector timing to be set very precisely with VCDS or it will run like a bag of spanners or not at all if its far enough out.

The sensors do not need calibrating or programming themselves (with the exception of the DPF Pressure sensor which requires calibration/adaption).

PD...it's spot on when running

Can anyone else tell me if this guy's talking **** or not

Do you have access to VCDS, it maybe worth getting a full scan of the car for fault codes. If you do not have it, then there is an owners list in the VCDS forum. A scan with a generic reader will not always provide access to all the car systems, hence the VCDS requirement.

I cant see how a sensor fault would stop the glow plugs working, no engine sensors have been called on before the engine starts.

There maybe a temperature sensor which determines if the glow plugs are needed, but it would not need calibrating and simple replacement (assuming one exists).

Don't have it and don't know anyone with it, but the guy today had the snap on diagnostic, I've had 2 scans done and all that came up was the 4 plugs not getting power (I know that), and the camshaft sensor....I disconnected the coolant temp sensor and the glow plug light stayed on for about 3-5secs longer but doesn't matter as there's no heat/power going to them

The camshaft sensor can cause cold start problems, had it on my old Superb PD. Replaced with a new sensor, and it always started first time every time. Access to this sensor is difficult because the cambelt is in the way, and the sensor is IIRC mounted in the cylinder head. With a failed sensor the car will be looking for the sensor signal and not getting one it understands. After a while the ECU gives up and will use the crankshaft sensor as fallback, but it will take several long cranks before it will start.

Has the coolant temp sensor been changed?

Neither the camshaft or coolant sensors need any kind of setup.

That's right, yes it's a bugger to get to but doable I think....but that still won't have anything to do with the glow plugs not getting power/heat, or will it

No I just disconnected it, I put it back though

Mannyo I hope you answer cause no one else despite the knowledge on here

Presumably the relevant fuse has been checked...

I cant say for sure, maybe the car believes that the air temperature is warmer than it is, and is therefore not calling for the glow plugs. VCDS can look at the various sensor readings with its measuring blocks section, scrolling through these should reveal quiet quickly any temperature anomaly.

Access to VCDS (rather than a generic code reader) can be a real help with identifying weird gremlins.

Yes

The thing is...when I turn the ignition on and use a test light/meter pen with one end on the battery and the other on the connectors on the glow plug rail, it lights up for about 2-3secs then faintly flickers and goes out....I think that's what's happening i'll check later

If I thought putting a cam sensor on would fix I'd get it, but like I say, it's this no power/heat to the plugs I don't understand

I'll look to see if there's anyone with this vcds near me and if they can help....then again, the amount that's looked here but not said anything, you'd thing someone would have piped up....maybe they don't want involved

i had the car at me and got vcds on it and done a full scan.

Many thanks Wilson and again for scanning the car, was really nice to meet you....even if we did yap for ages

Langers....many thanks to you too for the link, i'll be looking at the harness and connections, I'd followed it before and opened up the plastic cover at the bulkhead and saw the connector but didn't realise it was for the gp's

What gets me though....there's only 2 wires getting joined by new terminals and heatshrink ect, but 4 at the connector for it in the harness at the bulkhead....what's going on there

If you replace almost any part in VAG car - IT MUST BE RECODED in particular control unit.

Example...you wan't cruise control and control unit in steering wheel is not ready for cruise control. YOU replace control unit, you have to code ECU that cruise control is fitted in, you have to reprogram steering wheel control unit for ESP and other electronic ****.

Basically, if what was replaced has some sort of control unit - every replaced part should be coded. I'm not 100% sure but it may be something with serial numbers of components and safety. No idea.
