Auto headlights come on very early

Featured Replies

Coming from 2 Audi's with auto lights, which seem to turn the lights on when I expect (the former Audi had the option set to 'Late', the current has no option), my Octy3 even with it set to 'Late' seems to turn them on significantly earlier than I would or the Audi's would.

More annoying than this, and as already suggested above, they also have the threshold to turn back off very close to the on, so you often have a 10 min session of 3-4 on/off's... Which then gets annoying.

I don't mind so much that they come on early (despite being set to 'Late'!), but the on/off thresholds should be set further apart to avoid the on/off scenario. There are options with VCDS to adjust the sensitivity, but I've not had a play yet...

One Mondeo was on a 03' and last one that my Mrs now has is an 07'.

Never had a problem with the auto lights, id rather they were on than off in most circumstances (running around all day every day on dipped beams is actually v safe and not a nuisance to anyone).

Having had auto lights for years, then having two cars without then going back to one again I can say for sure its one thing id always have from now on. High beam assist not so much but only because its not clever enough to deal with all scenarios where main need to go back down to dipped to prevent dazzling of other road users....maybe if it were a system like that employed in the 3 series BM.

One thing i really am not sold on and if anything are worse than previous (VAG) cars ive owned are the auto wipers. Really seem to have a mind of their own....either very late to react to rain or hypersensitive and start rubbing the screen bone dry with only a hint of spitting. I use them but they do irritate.

Something that is rather nice in the Mk3 though is the ability to deactivate the rain sensor completely from the infotainment.....you get regular intermittent wipe instead of auto but still benefit from the auto lights and dipping mirror.

My HBA dips no problem at the sight of tail or head lights ahead...

Works equally as well as my Audi's and my 1 series BMW.

Its not tragically bad, there are just occasions it doesnt react like I would...its little things like if you come up behind a car on a straight road and the car is still some way off, if the lights also are not particularly bright you end up dazzling the poor sods for a while until the camera finally detects the car. Pedestrians and people on push bikes it also tends to do in due to the lack of light emitted, again unless they happen to have a super bright torch/bike light pointed in the general direction of the car.

On a vRS where it uses the lane assist camera directly on the windscreen I do wonder whether it is slightly more effective than the system employed as standard on the Elegance (with the camera installed in the rear view mirror base and having to focus through the windscreen glass. I have however just cleaned all the new car clag off the inside of my screen (only took 10 months) so will be interesting to see if its any better with a clearer screen.

Both our cars turn the lights off when the engine is turned off, so they are both just set to 'on' all the time. And before this one, I had my Octavia tweaked to do the same.

As was said above, what's the problem with having your lights on? Be safe - be seen.

I agree with the OP mine also come on wayyyy to early - we have DRL's for day time and dipped beam for dusk / night / rain etc.

Mine just seem to be wanting to come on all the time, even with a bright day with a hint of cloud.

Despite a long time sifting through the coding and adaptations, I cannot find an option to reduce the light 'switch on' threshold :-(

I have tried changing the screen type but results in very little change

Just to be clear,  i wasn't questioning to use light or not use lights. It was about the effectiveness of the auto function.

Relieved to hear the lights come on automatically over 80mph....  Means that the Sunday driving brigade has no excuse for pulling out in front of me at 140mph...

I think it's 86mph.

Mine doesn't come on automatically.

I usually drive at 152 km/h on highways.

Different configuration from the factory...?

Are they set to Auto?

This was also a feature on the O2....

I always use the AUTO switch position.

I think the car is differently configured in my country.

I dont think mine has highway mode either, is a MY14 UK Elegance.

My previous Golfs had this function, the O3 definitely does not activate dipped beam at speed, only if the wipers activate them. Maybe it can be coded?

Maybe...when I played with VCDS I found a value set to 140 km/h as I remember
