27" Monitor for Gaming and PC use...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm needing to purchase a new monitor, but it needs to be a bit of a jack of all trades type thing. It will be connected to my PC but also my Xbox One. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with this? The PC will be used for some gaming, but mostly the Xbone will be used for that.

Should I go for 1980x1080 or 2550x1440?

There are so many options and opinions out there i'm going cross eyed!!!   :nerd:

Thanks in advance :)

Dave

If the majority of gaming is going to be on the XBone, I suspect if you go for the higher resolution screen you'll start to lose picture quality. Once the console has upscaled from 720p or 900p to 1080p, then the monitor has done the same to 1440p it will start to look a bit iffy, and it won't help the response times either.

You could also consider a nice 32" full hd tv.

Excellent point well made! I hadn't thought that through - I guess 1080p will be fine for the PC as it's not being used for any photo/video editing.

I can't really do a 32" TV as i'm sat about a foot (maximum) away from it!!!

1080P will be fine for the PC, most PC monitors are either that or 1920x1200 anyway. At 2560x1440 the text will be quiet small, and a PC graphics card could struggle to drive that resolution at gaming frame rates.

Brilliant, thanks! I'm guessing the refresh rate isn't really a big deal either, as the XBone only outputs 60Hz anyway.

I was thinking something along the lines of this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HZF2ME0/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0GFK3JH4E5B337CJ3SDN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294

Yes, unless you have a beast of a graphics card the extra resolution will hamper PC gaming too.

Something like this could be worth a look. Fast response times and both HDMI and DVI inputs

Lovely! Ideally I need to get it from Amazon as i've got/getting a load of vouchers, so i'll see what's what spec wise.

Thanks again guys!

I have a mix of 24" and 27". The 27 is actually ok on it's own, I'm just lazy with alt tabbing some days. Mainly as I seem to be a forerunner of goldfish memory testing.

It's a good size to enjoy. Can easily get three or more side by side browsers, assuming a mobile esq sizing, eg 3 portrait tablet views of sites.

It's the early dell 2711 which is ok. Except it's blinking hot and the matt coating is a bit icky at some things, like photos'. Although as I'm a glasses for screen use wearer, I can't tell that much any more. I've toyed with selling it more than a few times, because it would be cheaper than upgrading the 24's to 27's and I'd get some desk back :D and I really don't need more blue light on my eyes.

Now all those issues are fixed in later models, but worth thinking about as it's a sizeable investment.

If it helps I ran a game last night over all three on nvidia share screen thing, so something like 5000x1060; thats the messing up bit, and it ran ok on a gtx680 card. Ok is of course variable. It didn't detract from my lack of ability.

Might be worth thinking smart, bearing in mind 14days from now there maybe some really good offers... or not.

/edit. just looked at that ebuyer priced one. omg, that hurt amazing price drops. I got this in 2012 when times were good.

/edit 2, why not.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hannspree-HL273HPB-inch-Monitor-1000/dp/B00MFIRG20/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1419336887&sr=1-1&keywords=hannsg+hl273hpb but is handspree the same as handsg.. was there not some hoopla about hansg a few years ago. Seem to recall something from ocuk.

/edit3 forgot to say if you do go for the 2560 res stuff, you will/maybe need the right cable the full dual dvi ones. Most of mine from years back would not drive the res, display port to mini dp and dell dp are ok.

Colin, the Ebuyer monitor is in no way comparable to the Dell U2711 as the Dell is an IPS 1440p monitor which still attracts a reasonable amount of money.

I don't find running games at 1080p on a 1440p monitor an issue as the pixel density is reasonable enough, one of my graphics cards failed recently so I've had to drop to 1080p for most games and there hasn't been the soft picture scaling issues I was expecting.  That said I'd only go up to a 1440p monitor if you're going to be using something that takes advantage of the higher resolution, I bought mine for photo and video work plus had a powerful enough system to natively game at 1440p so I've been pleased with it for those uses.

Thank you for that, John. I'm going from a 22" monitor, so it's quite a jump, but I don't think I need to go the extra mile and get a 1440 as I won't be doing any photo or video editing.
