Rapid audio upgrade...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I didn't even realise there was a section on here for ICE - how pleased am I to find it!

So, I'm in need of help and advice. I have a 2013 Rapid 1.2 Elegance (saloon look alike version). I love the car and in fact surprised by the features that have come with the swing radio but as normal feel that the quality of the sound is a bit poo or should I say lacking. I love that there is a lovely picture on the unit when I reverse, that it has a usb (MDI) slot and that I now have a bluetooth hands free kit. So really I'm not interested in changing the heading (although like the look of the alpine xd800u http://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/advanced-navi-station2676/x800d-u , just can't afford it!)

So I have an alpine mrv-f340 amp ( http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500MRVF340/Alpine-MRV-F340.html ) that I think I may use and I'm looking to upgrade the speakers in the doors.

Does anyone know what size and can recommend a speaker that will match the amp and the characteristics of the rapid? I'm thinking along the lines of Focal/hertz/jl audio and would look to spend between £100-200. I also have a pair of Infinity tweeters and crossovers lying around but can't find the mid range drivers.

The next task would be a sub in the boot but thats a job for the summer!

Any help/advise welcome...

Jon

Hi Jon

I had a close look at this when I upgraded my Bolero to a Columbus I my 2011 Octavia. Lots of people were saying that the system was only as good as the speakers. They could not be more wrong. Using the same SD card the sound quality with the Columbus is dramatically better in both bass and midrange.

If the Rapid has the same speakers, the week point is the head unit first.

Have a good Christmas.

Hi Jon,

Sorry to rake up an old thread. New Rapid Spaceback owner here and looking at options to upgrade the OEm "Swing" head unit.

Do you mind me asking if you've changed your unit and if so, whether you're happy with the sound quality, etc.

Thanks

Just read your reply, sorry!

I've not changed it yet but will probably replace it with an alpine car play unit iLX700. It has slipped down my list of priorities at the moment :)

So change of plans... with us having another baby, moving house and lots of other crazy stuff going on. I'm going to use the old Alpine amp connected from the speaker wires using the front left and right channels to power the standard speakers (for now) and just put in a cheap 8" Alpine Sub Box run off the rear channel bridge'd. Not quite the SQ car I'm after but should be an improvement...
