Hello, please don't beat me with a large stick, as I have an Octavia, but I am interested in a Citigo/Up! (but no Mii) from 2015.

 

Two questions - is it in fact true that there is no difference in torque between the two engines? (Until you get over 4500rpm?)

 

My second question is - is it true that the 59bhp engine has slightly longer gearing?

 

I'll be greedy and ask a third - what's the 59bhp doing RPM-wise at 75mph? Is this car too weedy for the motorway?

 

I'm asking because my Octavia Tdi has 6 gears and only does 2000rpm at 80mph. What a difference I can look forward to.

 

Anyone who's got a lower-powered car, I'd love some advice. Mind you, I can't help wondering if Skoda will put the turbo engine in one and then I'd definitely buy one, no question. More power, longer gearing...well, one can dream, I suppose.

I've had both and can confirm the lower powered one is just a detuned version of the higher powered one.

Up to around 4,500rpm the bhp/torque is the same.  Then the higher powered one goes on to reach peak power just over the redline.

You rarely can use rpm over 4500 anyway really. 75 hp version isn't worth it, if you are buying a new car.

Citigo is fine on motorway at 70/75mph at around 3000rpm bang on in 5th gear for my 59bhp. Which is 600 rpm lower than the 1.2 i20 I used to drive. If you put your foot to the ground, there's enough oomph to get you going for an overtake. The car is so light. It's not a speed machine, but it's more than comfortable.

3.   At 75mph the 60bhp engine is in the sweet spot so if you accelerate there is still plenty of go. It has no problem keeping up on motorways; steep hills is where it struggles so you end up changing down. A lot! But that's OK because the clutch/gearbox are a delight to use.

 

The best bit is that above 4000rpm it makes a great sound and is willing to rev eagerly up to 6000rpm and beyond. Drive it like a hooligan and you can still get 50+mpg and you will be grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

Well, those answers seem like a good recommendation. I don't need such a big car now so would like something newer that actually handles and feels a bit alive. I remember in 1989 I owned a VW Polo Coupe S and it had a 1272cc engine and only 55 bhp, and that was enough to cruise at 75 mph. Amazing how technology has thankfully come on in leaps and bounds. I do a mixture of town and motorway. Town is ok for the Citigo, but I have driven the Octavia to England a few times, so reticent to drive something so small on 900 miles of motorways! Unless anyone knows anything different... Guess I'll fly next time:)

 

Another reason to downsize is that I have filled up the 560 litre boot of an Octavia 3 times in 2 years. I carry my son, who is only coming up to his 5th birthday, for the last year and a half, so what's the point? I have the Octavia as a company car, but the Up! (do I really have to put the exclamation mark every time?) or Citigo is a good proposition and a nice looking car. In Poland Skoda is of course cheaper, but the top-spec Up will cost 9000 sterling. Not bad. Citigo a bit less. A Monte Carlo with satnav and 16 inch alloys would be nice.

I downsized from a 200bhp Ford Mondeo to the Citigo and haven't missed the Mondeo at all, in fact I have absolutely loved the Citigo and the fact that it costs peanuts to run. I have taken one son and all their kit to university in the Citigo, and I have taken all 3 kids to visit their grandparents in the Citigo, and it coped fine on both occasions. Back seat room is good according to my 19-year old 5' 9" lad.

 

Sat Nav is standard on the Monte Carlo and 16" wheels with the dealer supplied and fitted Eibach springs would be a good choice. I would suggest you pick cruise control and heated seats as well for an excellent all round car.

I went from a 1.9tdi Octavia to my Citigo Sport and it's so much more fun. Yeah the Octy has that PD punch but the little Citigo is great after 2K rpm [emoji106]

It's great throwing it around. If I want all out straight power I use the Rapid but still go back to the Citigo for fun [emoji16]

It's probably important to note that it's quicker round corners with the greentec suspension (tell your insurers it that, don't say it's got sport suspension, say it's lowered for "economical reasons"  :notme:)

We have a Ocky 140 DSG and the 75ps Citigo. At 70 the Citigo is a little over 3k rev wise. I find its better to have the extra 15ps and not use it much than not have it at all.

Quite often! I take mine up towards 6000rpm off most roundabouts and when overtaking; another 15bhp, ie 25% more power, would be most welcome.

How long engine revs from 5000rpm to 6000rpm, I'd say not very long. If 75hp version gives better acceleration it's caused by gear ratio. I couldn't find any differences between two, and I have tested both.

I've got an octavia and a 60bhp citigo. To be fair 60bhp is more than enough for what I need. It's fine on the motorway. Ok it's no Octavia but it's fine.

I tried to be a boy racer today. I tried several ways to use revs between 4500-6000 rpm. I gain no real benefits by driving like an idiot. At first gear it takes split second from 4500 rpm to 6000 rpm. At 2nd gear speed is lunatic over 4500 rpm, for urban area.

So far I don't want to pay extra to get +15 hp. If remapping is possible some day for reasonable price, then yes. Now I'm happy enough for 60 hp. So happy that I'm waiting another 60 hp Citigo to arrive in next year. :clap:

And of course if you have the money I'm sure a turbo option is possible, there's a lot of room under that bonnet once the pesky filter is out the way and I'm sure if you find someone nerdy enough you can put the boost gages into the PID unit
