Protecting hub centres

Featured Replies

How do I prevent the hub centres from rusting when running steel wheels in the winter? They are already quite corroded after 2 years, so I have covered them in copper paste for now; any other suggestions welcome. Happy new year, when it comes, and thanks.

ACF 50 is great for this, I used it on the Fabia Scout hub centres for 2 winters and they are good as new. I use it on my bikes as there is a lot of exposed metal for salty winter roads to get to.

I keep them clean, and use vw caddy hubcaps. They work a treat. Partnumber 2K060116, paid about 20€'s for a set of 4 delivered.

Eek that was a typo, partnumber is 2K0601169

Thanks, I`ll use both ! I really appreciate the picture, TT, as there is a lot of choice online. The hub centre appears to be 50/51mm internally, but will probably be more secure with those ones covering the bolts as well. Great advice, as normal.

Ordered from Germany

Do the round type vw caddy caps fit as well? There are loads of those available but the type above are hard to track down in the uk it seems.

I think so, but I think they are specific to wheel size. I guess the ones above that I have ordered will not fit over the locking nut ?

  • Fitted Caddy caps to my winter steels on my recently disposed of Yeti.
  • 4 of indents fitted snugly to the wheel nuts and the 5th. was left 'loosely' holding onto the locking nut - they never came off nor gave any reason for concern.
  • Sourced the Caddy caps from local VW dealer - from memory they were £38 including VAT for a set of 4.

19.60 euros, plus 12 e delivery, from somewhere I can`t pronounce in Germany; so dealers here marking up 100%. Good to hear they should fit over locking nut, thanks

You can get little plastic dome type things that push in.

Yes the circular caddy hub caps will fit over 16" steelies.

You will your wheel nut caps though, as Skoda wheel bolt heads appear to be smaller than their vw equivalents.

No, I mean the small dome things, it's the same size as the hub inner diameter and It just pops into the bore, it protects the hub nut from corrosion.

just ordered a set from Germany as well, sounds like the same place, so hopefully wont be too long until they arrive.

Frod is right; the vw ones pictured need fatter nuts to clip onto, so I`ve got 4 spare, or I need a full set of vw nuts. Part no 2KO601169 does not fit. Bummer

If you remove em and simply put a generous amount of body polish on them and buff up it should stop the rot anually, basically it's a flwed design as it's simply a laminated sticker on a lump of plastic so as soon as water etc can attack the edges it will, hth.
