Engine swap

Featured Replies

I'm looking for help and advice, Just before Xmas my engine locked up in my skoda after it had screamed and reved very high filling the rear view mirror with smoke. I now need to replace my engine which is an AVS. What I need to know is can I replace this engine with any others or do I need it to be another AVS

Thanks

Really depends on how much work you want to do. You can fit any engine you like with varying issues and bridges to cross. But if you stick with the same its just a straight forward swap.

If only I could find another AVS all I keep finding is ALH which looks the same but not sure what I would need to focus to make it work or fit.

What are the difference between these engines AVS and ALH ?

My AVS is 81 kW 110 hp if this helps

I think you mean ASV, not AVS which is maybe why you have trouble finding one.

The ASV is 81kW. The ALH is only 61kW.

So I'm guessing that even though the engines look a like they are not compatible then ?

without too long thinkin, or bothering to check, iirc the asv lump is 110bhp. The ALH is 90. The only difference is the injector size - ASV has bigger ones, and a slightly different engine map to cater for different fueling rates. There maybe a difference in turbo regarding fixed vein or variable not really sure, but my ALH has variable. Both engines will fit in the same place. Hope this helps :)

there are plenty of asv engines - I recently got a complete one for £320 delivered inc all ancillaries except turbo.

there are bare engines for around £250 (injectors only)

Exactly, cheap enough swap.

might be worth doing the clutch & timing belt at the same time.

If you know we're I can find an engine please feel free to post the links

Thank you

By the sounds of it the engine went runaway by consuming its own oil.  Typically this is due to the turbo oil seals failing and the oil being fed into the intake from the turbo.

So you should budget for a replacement turbo if you get an engine without one.

Without a doubt good call. Timing belt and clutch while engine out. Be gutting to do a swap to them have to mess around after doing a clutch.
