  • Nice to see it in the flesh@GTI International last weekend.

  • That came out a few weeks ago. 2.5tfsi with a turbo swap to 500bhp and a VW racing intake.  Same as my Yeti.   Bet it's fun, I know mine is.  Good power delivery at 500bhp from the 2.5 5 pot engine

  • Every DSG car I've had, I've got bored of rather quickly. More speed. Less fun. IMO.

I'm getting the 280 remapped next week (Mon 26th) and I have promised to write a detailed review of the whole experience of day, the company and of course the map. It's bespoke map, so there will be dyno before and after print outs. I've seen that 380 is possible with the R, however, I'm not entirely suer what (if any) differences there are between the R and the 280 engine, other than the paper spec of 276 and 296 bhp...more than one 280 owner has seen 300 on a dyno, so maybe they are in fact identical, and it's just marketing from VAG. Either way, I'm not expecting, nor wanting anything more than 350, I'm expecting around 330 ish. Through the front wheels. Should be, er, interesting. More to follow....

Steve,

Is the 280 engine an already breathed on /remapped version of the 220 bhp engine or like the Golf R does it have some mechanical strengthening and fuel delivery improvements etc. see attached brief description from evo. http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/291619/vw_golf_r_mk7_review_price_and_specs.html

What other upgrades are you planning i.e. brakes etc.

Leon Cupra 265 good, 280 maybe better by a bit, just a bit.

280 without a Manufacturers Warranty on the Engine, maybe just too risky.

& a Golf R can easily be Remapped for more,

but again needs to prove its reliability before going for that £5,500 gamble.  JMO

My understanding is that it is essentially the same engine, ie strengthened pistons, new head etc etc. I'm sure I've read as much in more than one review, but as eve, even the more techy mags like Car and Autocar are still in the automotive infants school.

Absolutely agree George, however, the company I am doing this with is not yer usual back street fag packet outfit, in fact they are not even your usual here;s your generic stage 1 map and good luck. I have spent a long time chatting to them on the phone, as much about their warranty as their approach and method. The key thing is that they will underwrite not just the parts they change, which is the usual warranty from the more credible mappers; which effectively is only the ECU! The warranty I have will cover any component directly affected by the remap, so if my turbo explodes as a result of it, then it is covered. Obviously there is a reasonable time limit, as you cannot expect it to underwrite an entire lifetime of wear, but with all mods there is a risk. The key thing is that I decide exactly how much additional performance i want, as it's completely bespoke. we've already agreed that for example we want to maintain the same torque curve shape as stock, as this will maintain driveabliity, reduce the strain on the transmission by avoiding a wall of torque at low engine speed; and will preserve the same 5k+ pull to the redline. If I decide that I only want a 20bhp increase, then that's what I'll get, if I want to wring every last drop out, then that too; and all points in between.

Given my risk mitigation generally in life, I won't be going for every last bhp, as the topline numbers are unimportant, it's how it drives that is critical.

NB - I've just discovered a bunch of threads about premature IHI turbo failure on the R / S3 and 280. Separate thread coming up...

I'm sure I've since read it will be 396 bhp, or somthing just under the magic 400. At least that would be consistent...

I just want to see how they fix the lag a turbo 2000cc engine typically creates at 400bhp.

Considering as a production car it'll have a safety margin and not be tuned to within an inch of it's life so be capable of more power if anyone wants to bin the warranty.

Personally I'm not holding out to much for this car when it arrives, after all the big fuss with the seat being faster round the track with only FWD and the golf R having AWD. I've not read any info on the golf 400, so unless they have done major suspension and chassis changes, all they have done is put a more powerful engine in a golf R with bigger brakes and will charge an astronomical amount of money for a golf.

Yep, it's business, about knowing your market. Bit like Audi RS3 coming in the spring.(why bother with a S3 Sportback available)

Bet you would love to drive one and have some real driving fun though!

Better sample an R first though, that might be enough for you.

Interesting overview.

I do hope when they do sell them there is also a Beetle R400.

Show off your feminine side George.

Would that come with a plastic Venus fly trap in the dash?

I do not need a full race prepared one or the likes,

just something for Bank Holiday Weekends and getting to the Carpet Bowls Club nights.

If Oettinger can sort it:http://www.carscoops.com/2014/05/oettinger-brings-new-vw-golf-r-to-near.html I feel with the resources of VAG then they can also and put a Warrantied 425 bhp under, the bonnet in every day car !!

At a price undercutting the AudiRS3.

Should have the facts by Autumn 2015.

Nice to see you changed your mind about leaving when you had a moment the other day.

Might be my eyes, but I can't see any indication of lag/no lag in there. It's just quoting figures.

Which bit am I supposed to reading?

Also saw that tuner you linked to has made a 500R Golf.

They've put in the TT-RS/RS3 5 pot engine.

They're a bit late Richard, already got the 510R Yeti

Somewhat amusing it uses the same engine, upgraded turbo (apparently) and even air intake.

Looks good, still can't see it sub £40k tho even if it is prob £4-5k options makes it pricy again
