noise when steering in full lock

Featured Replies

just did my first 3 point turn in my new Octavia and when I had the steering on full lock and turning the car there was a slight scraping/grating noise until i turned the wheel so it wasn't on full lock, as anyone else experienced this issue?

many thanks for any replies in advance

Does it make noise while stopped or only when moving? Have you checked for transport blocks.

I think you will find this is common on any car when on full lock. You are nearing or at the end of the power steering where it is stopped and cannot 'give' any further, even though the motor is trying to.

While its moving its making the noise, im going to try again today to see if it makes the noise again, ive not checked for the transport blocks because i had not heard any noises when going over bumps which i had read normally happens if they are still on but ill have a look at that also today

I was told mine did this when turning in our work car park in the summer. The wheel hasn't fallen off yet.....

I had the same issue with mine. CV boots need greasing. Take it to the dealer and he will do it for you and then there will be no noise what so ever.

CV boots need greasing or CV joints need greasing? Cant see why you would want to grease a boot. And the joint will come with enough grease to last its service life unless a boot fails

Exactly and if the boot fails the CV joint will fail rapidly.

I believe that the noise is the boot rubbing against itself when on full lock; my car does it too. Therefore if you grease the boot it stops the rubbing noise. The noise is not coming from the joint so greasing the joint won't help, and as you say it is greased for life anyway.

If you grease the outside of the boot it will attract dirt which will then rub against itself as it runs and could wear the rubber out?

I've never heard of the outside of a CV boot needing grease..... "Nonsense" comes to mind...

Sounds like it to me

Bump on this thread. What was the outcome? My car makes this noise too! Just live with it or do I need to do something about it. My cars only a week old.

Cheers

Mine does it too, i've also heard it on other peoples VW's. Always assumed it's the CV boot rubbing together as it's flexed.

I am sure it is something to do with the ABS sensor arrangement...sounds a little like someone running a nail across corrogated plastic. Every VAG car Ive had in recent years does this including my Mk3 Octavia and Mk7 GTD.

Pretty sure I had this when turning left on full lock. Will check again when I'm next out.

Thanks for the quick replies, glad its something which others experience too. Car is going in on Monday as the bi-xenon headlights are only shining a car lengths in front so would of got them to look at the steering lock noise also if needed.

Any updates on the problem?

My car has this noise right out from the shop. The dealer told me that it will break in after 150km but it didn't...

There is no noise when turning the wheel from lock to lock when stationary. The noise appears only when moving slowly on 1st, 2nd or reverse and the steering wheel has done more than 2/3 round.

Now the car has 300km on the clock and I've went to ask what to do about that noise. They've recorded the sound for examination and two days later told me that the gearbox oil should be changed.

WTF??? this is brand new car and it has this noise from 8km!

Now we are waiting for delivery of the new gearbox oil....

Description sounds similar to the very  common Fabia ii problem of inner track rod ball joint ends which rust and go stiff / rough. Might also be the outer track rod end ball joint.

@flatmo - The post previous to yours was 2.5 years ago. I don't hold out much hope of you getting a response from the OP.

I'm also highly dubious about the issue being the gearbox, and wondering just WTF your dealer is getting the oil from.

I am hoping thah some of the guys above have resolved the issue...

Additional info: the sound is present only when accelerating (not hard) on 1st, 2nd or reverse gear. The sound dissapears if I depress the gas or press the cluch or straighten the steering.
