And the tax class has always been paid by cash since atleast 2012 has no changed in tax class

Strange

I'd ring dvla

As in 1st post they're shut

Sorry your having bother, but it does highlight that you shouldn't wait till the last min to buy road tax. I suppose now technically as your car is not taxed you won't be able to drive it till DVLA open again.

Gone are the days you could use the " it's in the post" excuse. :)

Computers break, databases can be out of date. You get a month to renew, you should make the most of it.

Well I don't think the class has anything to do with how you pay it.

what is the tax class on the V5c?

Carry with you a copy of the DVLA website response shown in your original post.

If stopped, you can prove to police you have attempted to pay your Road Tax.

You can still pay cash at the post office as far as I'm aware, but still doesnt change the fact that to be honest you've created this issue by leaving it to the bank holiday, you've had a month to renew it but haven't.

Won't mean anything tbh, the plod will just report you to DVLA for driving in the road without tax.

Not to sure ill go and have a look when.im home

As the system is supposed to work on computers, I don't see why it should not be possible to tax a vehicle at the drop of a hat.

Like popping out to to an auction or local classifieds.   The govt has made it impossible while having the means to make it entirely simple.  Log on, pay money, be legal  - what's hard about that?

The difficulties are of their making, because the administration is effing incompetent.

In Daniel's case, or where there is a query, there could be a higher flat rate which gets sorted later.  Refunds if necessary, are surely easy enough to administer.

My paypal and amazon accounts work fine and they manage to keep it slim.

Or perhaps as someone else suggested, abandon the road tax idea altogether now computers can keep track of your insurance and MOT if necessary, and shove it all on fuel.

Users pay - wasn't that a clarion call at one time?

BUT, will it stop car going off for a holiday in police pound on rear of a pick-up?

Any update now that we are past New Years day and any possible DVLA glitch should be over. ?

If ANPR picks up on cars not with valid VED,

then surely Swamsea can put markers on saying, 'Purchase of VED failed because of our system.'  or something like that.

The last few times i have called the DVLA the phone was answered in under a minute, and then the Department dealing with my enquires

where very efficient.

I have just taxed my car online a few minutes ago, no issues at all.

The process has changed though now. I had to set up a Direct Debit, even for a one-off payment in full for 12 months.

Whether you chose to pay in monthly instalments, 6 months or 12 months you have to set up a DD now.

I'm sure last year I simply made a single payment as I needed to input my 'Verified by Visa' password, I didn't have to set up a DD.

£205 for my 2008 diesel Octavia Scout.

Seems strange to now not get a tax disc through the post!

Is it due an MOT?

No car was mot'd last week however I now old schooled it and went to the good old post office with my logbook and had to full in a direct debit form as I will be paying installments to save the headache when I sell the car in a few months

. Well I paid for mine in one go for January

I did mine last week and I'm sure I didn't have to set up a direct debit.

Hmm, have I messed up then? I just followed the process...

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax

The website was different last time I used it, lot's of orange boxes if I remember, and there was a section where it spent a few seconds checking that my car was MOT'd etc.

This no longer happens. I got an email telling me my DD was successfully set-up and they'd take the money on the 1st February (tax runs out at the end of January).

Last time they just took the money there and then, no DD, even though I was a month early as I was this time.

Maybe I missed the option to opt out of setting up a DD...

Just seen this following the link I posted in the previous post...

Beta on GOV.UK

The ‘beta’ label means you’re looking at the first version of a new service or web page.

GOV.UK regularly launches new or redesigned services. New pages with information previously found on government agency websites are published every day.

Beta services are designed to be easier to use than the services they replace. You shouldn’t experience any difficulty using them.

During the beta phase we gather feedback and data to make further improvements.

Sometimes a beta service will be available at the same time as an older, existing service - you can choose which one to use.

Successful beta services eventually become ‘live’ and replace any older services that perform the same task.

Direct debit is definitely not necessary for one off payments. Looks like you have identified the issue though.

best to check dvla website to make sure your car is taxed now, and the transaction has worked

sorry. I don't know why my reply has come up in bold letters, never happened before
