Car carrier in the Solent!

Featured Replies

I would assume they will employ a dutch salvage vessel that is equipped with a high powered water jet to blast the sand away from underneath  the hull.

As long as it's shifted before summer, the locals like to play cricket on the sand bar at low tide :D

Not a vessel we use, thankfully.

Also carrying a lot of fuel as well too. They interviewed an ex-dock worker on the news who said he reckoned the cars would have been pretty securely strapped in, and most things should be ok.

I no longer work at the docks so it's not my loading/ parking that caused this before anyone starts :p

Let's keep it tidy lads. Minis on that side, yellow things on the other side...

JLR cars, BMW, Honda. Vauxall also but not from Southampton.

The Vauxhalls tried to suicide, other cars rushed to try to help....push them over and they listed the ship

got a feeling ex dock worker might be wrong. Them strops are strong but holding 1.5 tons plus (for a car) and a few tons for a JCB at 45 degrees,,,,,,,,,,,,

Heard somewhere that it might take a while, weeks to months rather than days.

We must minimise environmental risk.  Not a proper quote, but the gist...

It's been rumoured  on the news, the ship had a new BT Open reach Navigation system fitted, wonder who fitted it    :notme:

Mk1 orange Fabia parked near the bridge?

Went for a look today; sad seeing it there all helpless.

Good pictures.

Your first one looks like those damned solar panel salesmen have been quick off the mark.

I'm thinking Herald of Free Enterprise. Looks like there is a large side door below the fully laden waterline? Surely not left open. A sudden 45° list is a pretty disasterous event.

I drive along the seafront everyday for work so can see it, She is still sat there ( all be it a bit wonky ) as of 6am Today. :|

BBC are reporting that the vessel has "freed itself" and is now moving in a south to south-westerly direction.

The vessel is now free, apparently most of the cargo remains undamaged according to local news reports. Apparently the cars are still firmly strapped in place, so the casualty list is small.

Even though now under tow it is still listing badly, and could I guess still capsize as its towed to just outside Portsmouth harbour

As she is now safely in the hands of tugs and 'experts' I suspect they will keep a keen eye on it, and avert any capsizing. Theres usually something that can be done as a temporary fix, before it heads back to port.

Possibly involving a bucket?

Possibly involving a bucket?

Last I heard was a couple of members from the detailing section were there using the two bucket method in an attempt to speed things up :notme:

Looks like there's a bit of a problem with some of the cars being driven off, here they are parking them up at Southampton.

Some on the lower car deck have been flooded and will require towing off apparently, some are intact and some have panel damage.

A car left at 45 degrees is fine, some driveways are steeper than that. The problem is when the ship went over, loose objects on the car deck went from one side to the other, damaging cars as they went. The cars themselves were fine until that happened.

Not all the cars were new either, some were privately owned and being shipped abroad by their owners to Asia and beyond.

I suspect the whole lot will be heading for breakers yards and dismantled unlike the previous carrier where Mazda crushed 4000 cars, environmental laws have changed a lot in 10 years.

Chances are a lot are being repaired and the owner will be none the wiser
