whats the best fuel that can be used to run a octy vrs?

Featured Replies

Hi, guys just wondering whats the best fuel that can be used in a octy vrs? im currently running mine on Shell Vpower and with it being LPG converted lpg gas from shell since im there anyways..

reason i ask as ive heard mixed opinions on supermarket fuels, never tried them myself but ive heard tesco fuel is as good as shell and there was a top gear test on it or something like that..

any advice would be much appriciated..

im sticking to Shell fuels unless advised for something better but otherwise i dont intend to change.

I just stick to v power, it's also at my local station. Momentum at tesco is the same octane but I don't like tesco much and they're not local. Way I see it is my car runs nice on she'll so why change, I know that if I'm stuck tesco have another option to use if I have to. A lot of mechanics I've met recommend v power in these cars, at least super unleaded, 99 octane with a map.

I'd never drop an octane level though, 99 all the way.

Fifth gear did a test on premium diesels and found that both v-power and bp ultimate both produce more HP than normal supermarket fuels.

I only run BP Ultimate diesel in mine, but that's more because I believe in the cleaning effect, I've always told myself that the HP increase was more of an imaginary effect, but it seems now it's really there after all.

I would say that, not supported by any in-depth knowledge of the matter, you would stand to gain more using a higher performance engine, switching to premium fuels. I don't think your grandmothers' Suzuki Alto will gain anything.

I run Tesco Momentum, main reason is the Tesco clubcard points and the cheap price!

I echo that, although my Mrs was told to run a tank of v power through every now and again for the cleaning effect. I had a terraclean done and a map so would like it kept clean as possible in the fuel system. To be honest I never ran mine on standard unleaded, never crossed my mind to do so so wouldn't know the difference. I filled up with v power when I picked the car up.

All the top end 98Ron plus are better than the boggo 95ron..................however usually in the tests the shell has the better cleaning packages..........plus they specifically mix it in the UK instead of adding a package to the tank at the storage/refinery.

UK 'Super Unleaded' from Esso, BP & Sainsburys is 97 RON Minimum, so not necessarily 98 RON Recommended.

Tesco Momentum 99 & Shell V-Power Nitro are 99 RON Minimum.

'Royal Dutch Shell' & 'Greenenergy' that Produce Momentum bring the fuel into the UK as a partnership,

they share the Facilities.

'Royal Dutch Shells' secret Additives / Detergents which include Sodium (salt) are just that, Secret.

Are they worth 5 pence a litre more than the same Additives in Momentum that are listed on the Spec Sheet?

(just not by name)

yeah your right mate, i originally ran mine when not on lpg on ordinary texico or regular shell fuel and after runnning it on vpower i can honestly say it does feel abit more pokey..

plus ive noticed the shell fuell burns off slower than any other station.

im going to stick with vpower on all my cars unless obviously its not a perfomer

I have always filled with Shell V-Power from day one (Sept 06'). Engine seems to like it, it still feels quite lively.

Stick with v-power. If your stuck for fuel and theres no shell about then tesco is an alternative for 99ron.

Back to back fills of same fuel for multiple fill ups and then trying something else over the course of a year in similar driving conditions has proven to me that V-Power outperforms other fuels in MPG enough to more than negate the cost difference against standard supermarket 95 Ron. Also a noticeable but subjective improvement in performance.

Note that tesco momentum is cheaper and purports to be much the same, but gave me a consistent 2mpg less than v-power.

My experiences only, ymmv - but I won't use anything else now unless I'm caught short.

I use tesco momentum and my car goes well on it. I may try shell v power when I'm due a fill up due to a lot of people rating it highly. Plus my local station is on the way home from work!! It'll be interesting to compare the two fuels anyway.

Mate keep us posted would be good to hear from someone that's tried both

Petrol :)

I only run mine on 98RON. Can be hard to find in NZ sometimes but it doesn't run right on 95, and standard fuel here is 91!

91? Holy Moley, is that even good enough for a paraffin lamp?

I only ever use either Shell V Power or Tesco Momentum. My cars remapped stage 1 with various other supporting mods. I find that V Power gives me consistently a few more mpg but the Momentum seems to make the car feel a little more alive. So for that reason and the fact that it is over 5p per litre cheaper I tend to stick mainly to Momentum :)

Dug out my spreadsheet.

Average MPG for each fuel used over 10 back to back fill ups. Driving same conditions and same routes for same mileage:

  • Tesco Standard 95 - 29.5mpg
  • Tesco Momentum - 31.4 mpg
  • BP 'Standard' - 29.5 mpg
  • BP Ultimate - 31.6 mpg
  • Shell V-Power - 32.5 mpg

Current cost per litre for each fuel (your local prices will vary...)

  • Tesco Standard 95 - 1.119
  • Tesco Momentum - 1.169
  • BP 'Standard' - 1.109
  • BP Ultimate - 1.199
  • Shell V-Power - 1.199

1 gallon = 4.546092 litres

therefore we can work out consumption over a total of 10,000 miles (avg yearly use) for each fuel type based on MPG. Overall totals:

  • Tesco Standard 95 - £1,786.51
  • Tesco Momentum - £1,692.48
  • BP 'Standard' - £1,709.02
  • BP Ultimate - £1,721.29
  • Shell V-Power - £1,677.16

Net result, V-Power is more expensive to buy but works out cheaper in the long term even with a small difference in MPG - some may get a bigger MPG difference in real world driving than I do. This is what I can quantify. What I can't quantify is that the V-Power makes the car feel more responsive and slightly more free revving, but although I'm personally convinced that's the case it could be placebo and there's no way to prove it.

To be honest I have a Tesco and a BP both pretty local to me. The car runs about the same on both fuels. However, when I do go into Cambridge they have a Shell station and I'll fill with V power nitro and can confirm that the car runs so much better on it.

Performance seems much torquier, and I get a slight improvement on mpg (44 mpg as opposed to 41mpg on Momentum)

Nice report, add the cleaning effect of v power into that and it seems we have a winner especially over longterm, with momentum a useful 2nd. Pretty much confirms what I thought. Ultimate seems Ok but I don't see much of that round my way. I'll continue with shell me thinks.

It runs my lawnmower okay. And SWMBO's Mazda.

Currently $1.879 for 91 here which is about 96p at current exchange rate.

96p? Holy moley! How much is your high octane there?

Exchange rate is roughly $2 per pound.

Local BP

98 - $2.049

95 - $1.989

91 - $1.879

Diesel - $1.209

"For every litre of petrol purchased, 67.129 cents is collected by the Government as fuel excise, excluding GST"

GST is 15%

Fuel excise

The fuel excise portion includes:

56.524 cents - National Land Transport Fund

9.90 cents - ACC Motor Vehicle Account (basically government health/accident insurance)

0.66 cents - Local Authorities Fuel Tax

0.045 cents - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy

In addition, GST is collected on the overall price of fuel including excise. The GST on excise amounts to a 10 cents per litre "tax on taxes".

There are no taxes on diesel other than GST. Instead, diesel vehicles pay Road User Charges.

All fuels also pay an Emissions Trading Scheme charge (approximately 1 cent per litre).

It is now government policy for all of the petrol excise tax motorists pay to be directed to the National Land Transport Fund for investment back into New Zealand's road and transport system. The AA lobbied hard on behalf of motorists for many years to have all the taxes devoted to road building and maintenance, road safety education and enforcement, and subsidies for public transport.

Previously, about 19 cents per litre of the tax motorists paid on petrol was diverted by the government to non-road and transport related projects.

Interesting, do you get much roller spin on launching the mower Rob :D  ?.

Someone I know, when he was a student living in a shared house, ran an old Suffolk Punch mower on Methanol a few times, apparently it went like hell, but they eventually melted the piston and the engine had to be rebuilt.

I Just filled up with Tesco Momentum 99 about hour ago at 114.9 ltre its cheap as chips. When I use vpower or Momentum 99 I never notice any difference.
