 thumbs up for the yellow skoda

Cheers dude, it was a lucky find, bit of a shock at first but loving it now.

i only use Tesco momentum in mine, it runs great and tbh if its good enough for Jason plato to sponsor its good enough for me lol

My brother is a Process Operator at a major UK oil refinery and knows a fair bit about petrol and diesel. He should do, he's involved in making the stuff. He told me that the base stock for 95RON unleaded is the same regardless of where you buy it. Same goes for 97 and 98RON. What differs are the additives that are put into the fuel for enhancing performance and cleaning. They added by each company to the base stock. The end product is therefore different, and so BP is different to Shell and so on. With almost total certainty the supermarkets do not use as good a cocktail of additives as the branded fuel companies. This is why it's cheaper, but it's false economy. I'm also firmly in the branded is best camp. My own car definitely performs better on branded fuel than supermarket fuel.

The best ignition timing for any petrol engine is as advanced as you can go without the engine 'pinking'. Since octane is a fuel's resistance to flame higher octane fuels ignite less easily, and a more controlled burning away from the source occurs rather than an uncontrolled explosion, which tends to happen with lower octane fuels. It also means that ignition timing can be further advanced with higher octane fuel with pre-ignition less likely. This and the fact that the fuel burns more completely is why cars perform better on high octane fuel such as V Power.

Currently in Russia, not that you would want to live here but the price of 98Ron is 33p per litre.  A few weeks ago when the ruble hit an all time low it worked out around 25p!

as a retired mobil oil employee myself, your statement is very accurate and informative, especially highlighting the quality of supermarket fuels

I appreciated it too

Honestly I can't move away from v-power. Its 1.15 at the moment next to me and it makes the car feel, aliv,e compared to asda and sainsburys petrol. I even had bp ultimate and even that seemed like it was supermarket fuel, car felt slow sluggish and not as quick, so my vote is v-power all the way

this makes complete sense as to why you would get more mpg out of branded fuel rather than supermarket fuel, not knocking momentum but im 100% sticking with v-power

Awesome thread and very good posts. Having just bought a 2007 Octy 2.0 VRs (200bhp) i was told by the dealer to stick to premium fuel and within that the branded types over the supermarket types. Think having read this thread i'll definitely follow his advice.

When I emailed r-tech for some advice recently they're first response before anything else was 'you are using 99ron aren't you?' i.e this is what you need for optimum performance before anything else, and given preference for branded over supermarket that just about leaves a choice of v-power or......v-power.

I use Tesco Momentum and have been to R-tech twice for mapping with that fuel. No problems related to fuel at all. I can't justify the extra expense of Shell/BP/etc. premium branded high octane fuel, especially when the track car needs filling up for a trackday as well as 3x 20-litre jerry cans.

Forgot about this thread. I swear by tesco momentum my car loves it for some reason. I actually filled up with shell v power a few weeks back and the car didn't feel the same. It just felt sluggish really not responsive at all. So i ran the car down to the fuel light switched back to momentum and after a few days its back to normal, sharp throttle pulling like mad! I'm not digging at v power btw everyones car is different it's just mine runs really well on tesco. Added bonus that its cheaper.

Not the only one buddy my car runs so much smoother and more pull on Tesco 99ron not to mention i get between 15-25 extra miles on £20 worth of petrol which for me is one more day before filling up

It is strange some cars run better on v power or momentum and visa versa. But i have tried switching fuels before just thought I'd try it again in case it was a dodgy batch or something. Same thing though so momentum it'll be.
