Are some options just ECU turn on's

Featured Replies

Hello Everybody. Been having a good look at the new Fabia and am a little confused about how some of the options justify the cost. They seam to be just a bit of programming in the ECU, for example:

The SEL comes with KESSY GO (start only) as standard, make this into KESSY (entry & start) and they want £160. Only thing I can think is an additional sensor in the rear so it knows your stood by the boot.

Driver fatigue sensor - this monitors how you drive you drive to decide if your finished. £50 option on all models but seams like just a program in the ECU.

Light Assistant is standard on SEL but Light & Rain Assistant is and additional £125 but from my limited understanding uses the same sensor in the windscreen. My only thought was a different wiper stalk possibly.

Cornering front fog lights £130 option on SEL as all ready has fog lights as standard. Is this a different unit with an additional bulb in which would justify the cost or again is it just a program in the ECU that needs turning on.

Smartgate - Really not sure on this one could need a wifi access point installing but talking to a AA man recently and he was saying this is the way things are going, they will come out to see you and before they have even got out of the van will have scanned the ECU for errors wirelessly. Clever stuff but also scary in the world in which people want to hack everything!

Just wondered if there were any Skoda guru's out there that could answer the question? or any one got a different opinion on it all.

I would think a few of these could be ECU controlled yes, however, if someone hooked up a laptop, you would think Skoda would be wary of this that people could just hack the car and get the features for nothing.  Maybe there are different versions of the firmware when different options are loaded at final build.

Cornering fogs - I would expect there's a motor added to do this?  How often is it foggy..? can't justify the costs when the headlights themselves don't corner..

Rain Assistant.. rather annoying wouldn't want it.. I'm hoping there's a kill switch for the Light Assistant aswell..

KESSY - not a fan of push button starting.. apparantly if you're within 1.5metres of the car you can gain entry.  I'm seeing if I can get an SEL without it on..

Driver fatigue.. I think it will annoy me too much.. I know when I'm tired.. I don't need telling.. besides.. I've got a wife who'll do the same thing.. £50 saved!

Surprised they can scan an ECU wirelessly.. with the car switched off.. that means its constantly transmitting which will be draining the battery and that doesn't make any sense whatsoever..

On my Octavia Vrs High beam assist was a £300 option, mine turned on for a bottle of Red.

I would think the Fabia would be the same, somethings just need turning on

Anyone with VAGCOM can tap into the ECU and change different parameters, there's quite a few on here that can do and some dealers will do it if you ask them nicely, I had a couple of things changed by my dealer when I bought it.

Cornering fog lights don't need motors, the fog light comes on automatically when you turn so the left will come on when turning left and vice versa, so can be activated by a laptop as no parts needed.

I doubt they'll build an SE L without KESSY as it's standard spec not an optional extra like it would be on an SE, you may need to buy an SE and pay over the odds to spec it like an SE L.

I think having read things again on the tech sheets.. the key is still used on the SEL, but it's used in conjunction with the Start Button, but the Kessy GO means you don't have to insert the Key, just keep it within 1.5m and press the button.. don't like it personally.. but there we go.

And if that's how those cornering fogs work, that's a bit of a cop out..

I understand what you say about the VAGCOM.. prefer to get my own copy of it though.. It doesn't stop dealers turning off features when you take your car in for service though!

kessy to me reduces security

non kessy,

you have a remote or key to enter vehicle (first security factor), then to start the car you need a key  to turn (second security factor) and the immobiliser chip in the key (third security factor)

with kessy

key within 1.5 mtrs to enter the vehicle ( first security factor) , then to start the car you need a the same key within the car and push a button (still only 1 security factor)

some keyless start systems need the remote placed in a slot in dash I assume this is for the immobiliser so maximum 2 factor security as opposed to 3 factor with keys, but with the information about how VAG and range rovers are taken does not look like you need to have an immobiliser chip

I hooked my VCDS clone (12.12.0) to Fabia III and was able to see very few modules so I decided to go for the original cable from Ross-Tech. When I received it I was able to see much more modules - see below scan (I changed VIn, WSC and serial numbers to avoid identification of the car and delaer who provided me the car for testing):

As Fabia III is based on MQB platform you can play with adaptations to enable new features - IMHO a lot of them, including majority of those listed by carl0076, should work.

More irritating electronic crap to go wrong and drive up the price - another trip down VW lane.

KISS.

Nick

thing is the electronics are a necessary evil for all the gadgets people want for comfort, convenience and safety

if you don't want so much you need to look at the cheaper Korean / indian brands or a car over 10 years old
