What did you learn to drive / ride on?

Featured Replies

Just a thought after the other thread about learner cars.

What did you learn to drive in?

Or for the bikers what did you learn to ride on?

I passed my test in 94 and my instructor had a Fiesta 1.8d, no turbo, no power steering. Hard to be subtle reversing round a corner when felt like you needed a breaker bar to turn the wheel but it was nigh on impossible to stall.

I also drove my Dads cars which were a Seat Cordoba and a Ford Escort 1.8td at that time.

I did my CBT on a Honda CG125 and my direct access (2001) on either a rather ancient Honda NC21 done as a naked or an even older Kawasaki GT550. Both were actually very nice to ride. I can't actually remember which bike I did the test on.

  • It is seriously addictive. Never had the same buzz from a car.

Learned in my Dads 1992 Citreon ZX volcane.  1.9 petrol.  Quite awesome little car to learn in looking back.  Quite forgiving.  Eg approach roundabout 3 to 2 goes to 4th, car doesn't stall and just keeps going :D

I learned and passed in that car with no proper lessons.  At the time I felt lots of practise (as in ALL the time) and reading books was enough.

my mums volvo 340... my instructor had a toyota corrola , i hated it,m the volvo was cool! :) leafspring rear suspension, tail slide everywhere!

Learned to ride on a Mz150 and car my Dads Skoda Estelle 120 I only went for a drive in it once for an hour . I thought this is easy so put in for my test and had 2 half hour lessons with bam in a metro . Passed 1st time . The Estelle was easier to reverse around corners as the metro the wheel was identical upside or down same for the British leyland logo symbol . 8 and half turns lock to lock with no power steering so counted how many times I turned the wheel so the same back to straighten up or you would move ever so slightly out or in ! New learners have never had it so easy with self centering steering

1982 car in a military Vauxhall Chevette

1984 Track vehicle licence, drove APC 432's radio version.

1996 bike licence then had Triumph Speed Triple 900cc in black.

Love that you learned in an estelle mate!

my first car was a chevette, another tricky handling RWD car, these things taught me my skills!

First 'real' driving experience was on tractors. Had a step through moped (Yamaha Passola IIRC :peek: ) when I first started working, then at 17 I bought myself a Suzuki TS100. NO compulsory CBT back then (1986) and I taught myself to ride the thing (clutch/gears) on Portland causeway :D  . This was around the time they brought out the take test within 2 years on anything over a 50cc so I just decided to get my car test instead. Mum had a mini clubman and she used to let me drive that around on 'L' plates. Took my driving lessons/test in a Fiesta.

Fiesta MK7 Titanium TDCI. Can't remember much more than that! It was a nice car to drive though :)

Nissan  Cherry so long ago I can't remember much about it,

Dad's Montego 1.6

Car: in a 2009 1.6 tdci fiesta. Wasnt bad.

Bike: 2005 honda CG125. Bought it myself with a little help from my dad. Eventually found that one for £1150 with 500 miles on the clock, and immaculate condition.

Eventually a drink driver pulled out on me and i went straight into the side of his pick up. That wrote that off, with 19,500 miles on the clock. His insurance bought it off me for £1300.

So i did well really.

Then onto bigger n better things (:

I learned to drive in a MF 575 that we have as a scraper tractor. I learned to pass my test in a Corsa.

I started with a mk1 fiesta 1.0L, four speed, no PAS or much of anything else from what I remember, instructor replaced this with a Chrysler Horizon 1.1 but I gave up with the instructor and bought my own car which I passed my test in, that was a Chrysler Alpine 1.3.

Oh and I also have a forklift certificate and did have a go at truck driving 14t cargo.

Datsun Cherry, a few years ago.

Learnt to drive in a mini and a Triumph 1300 and the bike was a BSA Bantam D7, but that was 1973.

Back in 1982 I passed in a 1979 Datsun Sunny [emoji106]

I learned to drive in two Hillman Minxes, the instructor (BSM) changed cars half way through.  For the day quite civilised cars.  The peculiarity was that the handbrake was between the seat and the door, like a Partner van today.  Passed my test in February 1968, first car was a Wolseley 4/44 - column change and umbrella handbrake.

Never gone down the bike route but have driven larger stuff, for some years I had a quarter share of a pair of Bristols.

I learnt to ride on a 200cc side valve 3 speed hand start and hand gear change LE Vellocette in 1974. I learnt to drive in a BT marina van a few years later. I still have my all pink paper licence-anyone else got one?

1954 Morris Minor.

When I was a kid I used to drive Dad's Escort Eclipse around the local housing estate and field (with his permission and guidance, I didn't just nick it).

For my "official" lessons it was a Rover 200 with a pervert instructor who would say to me "You can run her down, I'll give her mouth to mouth"... He was about 50 at the time...

I had three periods of driving lessons between 1999 and 2004 when I eventually passed. (Financial and life reasons stopped me the first two times.)

All through learner driving schools; (in order) A 1.0 Kia pride, 1.8TD Fiesta and a Fiesta petrol.

First driving school car was a Vauxhall Viva in July 1970 in Haverfordwest, but I'd been driving my father's tuned Morris 1100 on the local airfield for the previous 12 months, (plus a girlfiriend's Mini Pick-up illegally)

Took my test in Bristol in May 1971 in a BLMC 1300 and passed first time.

Took my motorcycle test on a CZ175 in Bristol in 1975, and went straight out and bought a Jawa350.

I like hearing all the old cars that people passed in from a good few years back lol :)

I passed in 2009 with a MK6.5 2006 Ford Fiesta 1.4 which, at the time, I thought was a great car to drive.

However I actually learned to drive a few years before I passed in my dad's X5 which was decent!

Sadly haven't got my bike license yet, although I plan on doing it soon. Raced quads all round Scotland for good few years though :)
