Our first MX-5

Featured Replies

Our first new shape MX-5 turned up today. Not top spec but a mid range 1.8. Based on a shortened RX-8 chassis and using the same drive line its really apparent it is a quality bit of kit. I think the looks are really cool, stays in touch with the old classic but adds a RX twist with the bulging wheel arches.

The interior is very well put together and unlike the first incarnation I can actually fit in it as the column is adjustable for reach and height.

Out on the road it handles very well giving good feedback, cant wait for the 2.0 and the rumoured MPS :)

Looks pretty tidy :)

Must admit, they look quite nice, but not in that horrid colour! :thumbdwn:

My friend has a G reg red 1.6 MX5 with over 200k miles on the clock, and it still looks and drives great. Its no stormer, but surely a classic in the making

I like the new shape.. more agressive than the earlier shapes... supercharged or turbo'ed would make a storming little car.

Looks much nicer in the flesh

Looks like its in very good nick. I presume that SWMBO will claim it as you have the pickup?

He He, when I said 'our' i didnt me mine ;)

I work at a Skoda/Mazda dealer and its the first one 'we' have got in :)

And the colour is lovely in the flesh

I still think the original takes some beating with the pop up lights and finger pull door handles. The new models are getting away from the 70's sports car look and it's a real shame.

Hmm, now I notice the abundance of other MX-5s in the background... Where is it you took the photos mate? looks like a good selection of possible candidates... because...

I'm seriously, seriously, thinking about getting shot of the Octy ever since my other half got her red P plate Mk1 5 a few weeks ago. I haven't had that much fun driving since 1994 (when I was driving proper old school cars like Triumph Spitfires, GT6s and Heralds)

I'm kind of half-heartedly (although more whole-heartedly every week) looking for a nice low mileage 1.8/1.8S-VT Mk2/2.5 MX-5...

So should I do it? And have you got anything fitting the bill there Ross?

We have got a pretty big stock of MX-5's purely as its Mazdas biggest seller, its the whole reason Mazda is still trading as without the MX-5 they would have gone bust years ago developing the rotary engine.

My choice of the MX-5 pre this new model would be a NB (post pop up lights) 1.8 Sport with the six speed box. Pricey but worth it if your after this kinda thing.

MX-5 with rotary engine would be nice!

Nice, the MX 5 is indeed a nice motor.

Was there actually a 2.5 MX-5 !

I think he means the 2.5 model rather than engine. As in MK1, Mk2, Mk2.5.

I do indeed - post 2001, there was a 'Mk2.5' also known as the 'shark mouth' 5.

I'm definitely thinking 1.8 S-VT sport with the 6 speed box and 146/7? BHP.

But I'm also kinda thinking sell the Octy and go cheap cheap cheap with a Mk1 and a turbo kit :-)

I love SWMBO's 5, it's like a proper back-to-basics sports car with no PAS, no ABS, no airbags, no LSD, just a motor, gearbox, propshaft diff and halfshafts all bolted to a light topless 2-seat bodyshell.

Cracking fun, there's not much point to point on a twisty country backroad that can keep up with me in the 5! I've really re-discovered both the art and the joy of just driving rather than driving quickly. Major dilemma going on for me now.

Not really liking what they've done with the front end, but looks pretty decent. Didn't get a particularly sparkling review when Evo test drove it, but hopefully I'll get a go in one myself eventually.

I've always liked the original and have always fought the MX-5's corner when other blokes think they're just for girls. I remember driving my Aunty's white 1990 offering with the base 1.6 and had a cracking afternoon in it - just not having to slow down for corners as much compared to anything else I'd driven was a real thrill, you could still make progress without having masses of power.

Actually, might get one of the older models for the weekends :)

He He look at you getting all clever with the smileys, be starting you own threads soon wont ya ;)

I know what you mean about the bolts though, most of them in the chassis corrode up aswell, doing a clutch can be a right chore when the brace bar bolts start breaking off the captive nuts in the body

I like them and I always go to the Barbers.

There is mention of an MPS version. Its about time the 6 series MPS arrived...unless it has? Nice

Mps?
