does de icer damages rubbers?

Featured Replies

My dad will never use de icer because he says its damages wiper and window rubbers. This correct?

Some might, some used to,  but rubber wipers stuck to frozen windows can rip.

So Scrappers can ruin Glass, and warm water used in temperatures that stay below freezing all day/night day after day can block heater /air vents and Door Panel inners etc with ice.

De-Icer works. and cars do not fall apart with the use of it.

Many cars decades old have had de-icer used every winter and Wipers get changed and the Window Seals last much as other cars window seals do.

?

What does your Dad use when Temps are very low and he would need to De-Ice cars maybe several times a Day?

Bad for paint if too strong iirc?

Cant be sure. I dont use the stuff. Mo just scrape

Heated windscreens should be as popular as rear heater windows!

It would be interesting to see examples of Paint Damage from 'too strong De-Icer'.

Any links to Stronger Versions of De-icer,

currently i am using 'Prestone' when the temps are well low, it was bought in Bulk Cheap around July when it was about the same price as the rubbish from Home Bargains etc.

The 'Prestone De-icer' is at least better than the Rubbish Prestone 'all season' to -10*oC Screen Wash that i bought so much of i will be giving it to people i dislike for years to come.

It might just be the cheap stuff from the supermarket but the de-icer I use defrosts the ice but then re-freezes almost straight away. I just use a scraper now. The extra effort warms and wakes me up!

I have used the Prestone for the last two years and have no rubber degradation or paint issues at all.

However I have gone for the heated screen on the Yeti which should arrive in April or May .... Just in time to try it out?! :rain:

Slightly warm water is the best

Its free

And does not smash windows like 99% of people think. Done it on every car / van i've owned

If you live or park on one of the areas that seldom has Cold Weather Triggers for 7 days with Temperatures or forecast to not be above freezing for 7 days (nights), then maybe Warm Water is probably the way to go.

If in some of the Post Code Areas that have had 2 Trigger already this winter, or on average 5 each winter,

then maybe, Night Before De-icer & De-icer is the way to go,

and once you have ruined a few Tinted Windscreens or Glass with scrappers, you give up on them until the Ice / Snow is soft.

I just use  screen wash in a spray bottle.

Try it

****es all over de-icer

And i live in scotland btw

You live in Dumfriesshire do you not,  and i spend much of the winter time just up the West Coast in the equally mild Sunny South Ayrshire.

Where warm water is just fine.

I read your post the other day about not needing to top up Washer Bottles.

I know i use a few Gallons every winter of Concentrated Winter Wash.

Now move 150 miles towards the north where i have stayed for a long time, or a bit further north,

and the difference is more than 150 Miles apart, like last night at -5*oC and warm this morning.

But if it stays bellow freezing for several Days & Nights, pouring Warm H20 over Locks & Air Intakes is not so bright.

& then there is the 'fact' the Warmer Water Freezes Quicker & Harder.

When you have several Days of Snow /ice that forms over night or even day time on vehicles & Warm Water poured or running over the Air Intake where the Ambient stays below freezing & vehicles are not garaged makes for Steamy Windows inside vehicles in many cases.

And several days of H20 poured on side windows and some getting down a Door Insides gets heavy,

when it freezes and does not get out the drain holes.

EDIT,

Sorry,

You did say you topped up.

£1 in the Tyre Pressure Machine & Water in the Washer Bottle and it does not freeze.

Which kind of shows the Ambient Temps where your car stays or get used.

Okay point taken

Vast majority of briskoda members are south of the border so definately do not require de-icer

Absolutely, Location Location Location,  & how far you might travel,

because 50 miles apart can be so different.

Lets hope that tonight most have strong enough Anti Freeze,

and some will be surprised the Windscreen Washer only works once or not even a trickle comes out.

Possibly cold enough some places for Diesel Waxing tonight.

I've found if you use a good glass sealant and keep it topped up. Ice doesn't bond to the glass as easily

Isopropyl alcohol shifts ice, there used to a lot of this in old fashioned de icer, not anymore hence the refreeze issues.

I use a scraper, it is much better than any liquid and with a good concentration of screen wash to stop jets freezing all usually works ok.

I think a lot of the modern stuff contains a lot of ammonia, sure smells like it anyway.

Most modern things don't work, I am of the opinion that if the product does not have a picture of dead fish, dead trees or a big black cross it will not work, new formulation usually means it no longer works too.

Years ago we had some fantastic products in the print industry, all but gone now, Ethyl Acetate and Isopropyl alcohol remain but MEK, GenClean and Tricoethylene have all been banned in our industry. No doubt a good thing as most were carcinogenic and our staff do not go home high as a kite!

I am using up the last of the Rain-X & Fog-X that i have,

& the oldest stuff i have found in various boxes, cupboards etc is a treat compared to some i purchased more recently when away from home and in need of it.

I need a new 'Much Cheapness'  Rain Repellent for when it is all gone,

and my last bottle of Turtle Wax 'ClearVeu' is all used.

It is a treat compared to the newer Rain-X bottles i have,  but also bought years ago.

Urghhh. I think I'll be scraping tomorrow morning.

The weather reckons the coldest night this year apparently. Which is saying alot, on Jan 18th.

Currently 0c and expected below -5 apparently.

Most side roads are just compact frozen snow now.

Seen 2 crashed cars today. 1 looked like to much speed was used on a corner, spun into a wall. The other was a nice passat CC which the driver had clearly expected to stop when he pressed the brakes before a tight corner. He to ended up in a wall. He was stood next to it looking quite upset.

Brilliant, as a result of a family member (20miles away) not de icing he's ripped the door handle off of his car, coming over tomorrow for an emergency bodge, just what I needed :wall:

Deicer is only alcohol.

Deicer is only alcohol.

Doesnt look too good if you carry a bottle of vodka in the door though
