White/grey smoke from exhaust

Featured Replies

Bought a octavia 1.8 vrs the other day and there is a lot of smoke from the exhaust whilst driving (mainly after coming of the revs, like when you come to a stop at lights/junctions etc)

There is no coolant loss, no coolant in oil and no oil in coolant, there is no loss of oil either

It's has been quite cold here recently (averaging 1-3degrees) but even when car is warm it still does it, I see other cars smoking when cold but mine seems to be kicking more out than it should

Any ideas? Thanks

Also the car doesn't overheat and when driving stays around the 50degree mark and when stopping it may go up to 90 but has never gone past 90

Well your thermostat is up the duff or the coolant temp sensor, it should not vary from 90 when it gets there.

Would that cause the smoke? How done check those parts to see which one if any isn't working? Thanks

  • Author

Just to add it only varies from 90 when I start driving again then rise when I come to a stop

I would say thermostat mate or CTS.

How can I check to see which one is st fault

It's most likely the 'Stat. Change that first and then see if the temp gauge still plays around. If it does change the CTS also.

This must be contagious, losing count of how many stats are getting chucked in the bin.  Had my OEM ones put in yesterday (I just did both stat and cts), problem has disappeared.

What causes the smoke then?

Could just be the cold weather causing it.

It is the cold weather,

Every year there is a rash of "loads of white smoke coming out of my cars exhaust", nothing to worry about, short runs make more water accumilate in exhaust system, its just boiling it out.

Ever followed a car starting out and seen water dripping out of the tail pipe?, (Turbo engines run a lot hotter).

Water = white smoke (should disappear after 10 -15mins into journey)

Blackish smoke = burning oil (will get worse when booting the car, help should be sought)

Mine doesn't seem to clear up after 15mins though, I took it on the motorway for about 12 mile @60mph and when I came off the motorway and drove round town there was still a lot of smoke

I agree with the above posts about the coolant temp sensor and thermostat needing replacement.

This can also affect your fueling ratios as the ecu is possibly being told that the engine is not up to operating temp.

Within about 3 miles it should be upto 90 deg C and stay there irrespective of driving or stationary.

Always, always buy genuine VAG sensors (CTS should have a green body), its false economy to try to save a couple of quid, all that happens is you have to do the work all over again in the near future. (I changed my cts (VAG part) a year after getting the car when it threw a error code, its 8 years old and still working.

Also, some users have found when replacing the rad thermostat, that the housing has distorted over the years and leaks upon refitting, so i think its a good idea to replace the housing when the stat is changed (I will do this when the time comes).

I would change both for the sake of £50 and your economy will also benefit!

  • Author

Yeah I'll change both and I am going to change the water pump and cambelt too

Where would be a good place to buy genuine parts? Thanks

As others, I think the problem is the thermostat (broken up or removed by previous owner) causing over-cooling.

I'd go to a dealer or Eurospares parts are normally OEM in a box marked with the actual manufacturer's info rather than VAG branding.

Ok thanks guys

There's a link in that thread for the parts I ordered from Skoda, you'll need O rings as well, they mention the part numbers in the description

As mentioned above if the stats out of whack your car will be running rich. After I did mine I got some oomph and economy back because the mixture is now bang on.

I rang eurocarparts and they are 8quid there and 4.40 at motorsave, 85quid fitted at motorsave haha

Is that proper OEM for that price? Bit cheaper than what I paid lol, oh well

  • Author

Eurocarparts do 2 brands, circoli and vernet so I'm guessing they aren't oem

Ah yeah, non OEM is a bit of a lottery, learned that the hard way. But if someone can vouch for those they may well be ok.

Might try one if.I can't get a oem one before Friday, if it fails again I will buy a oem one
