repairing the rear tailgate washer pipe on a superb combi

Featured Replies

Hey

so recently had a towbar fitted, and unfortunately, when they guys were replacing the d pillar trim (after tapping into the high tail light), they cracked the corrugated rear window washer water pipe.

hilarity ensued with many liters of water flooding into the rear of the car before I figured out what was happening.

anyhow, to affect a repair (with OEM bits :) you need the following:

1 each of 5J0 955 871 B and 5J0 955 871 A which are the OEM couplings for the corrugated pipes. these were quite reasonable at about 3 euro each.

if you have lost a significant chunk of corrugated 4mm pipe, then you may also need to splice in a bit (note that there was a good 15+ cm of slack in the piping in my car, a 2012 combi) using some OEM piping. this is part number 1J0 955 751 D, and is around 30 euros for a meter.

job itself is simple enough.

the couplers both work the same way - there is a circular clip piece which must be pushed up on the pipe and leaves 2 corrugations sticking out - cut the end straight on the pipe if its broken off at an angle before you put the clip on.

then you pop the rubber o-ring on, and push it up on to the corrugated ring nearest the clip (leaving one corrugated ring free). this is quite important to ensure that you have two corrugations after the clip, and when you pop on the o-ring, that there is one still protruding. this ensures a proper seal. the pop the clip & o-ring and corrugated pipe into the coupler until it clicks home.

the only thing to note is that its quite easy to push the circular clip up onto the pipe if you put the ball of your thumb to the face of the clip and push the clip open and back onto the pipe in the same movement. this will make no sense until you have to do it :)

a good write up with pics is here - its in russian but has some good pics which I forgot to take!

hope no-one has to do this, but if you do, hope this is of some help.
