Guess this will be new tyre time then.......

Featured Replies

The Mrs said one of her tyres needed pumping up today it was pretty much flat and then noticed this after I'd inflated it.....

She says she can't remember clipping any curbs recently so it might have been like it a while.

Ouch, that's scrap mate, unless you can find somewhere to effect a major repair. Usually commercial tyre places (like for tractors etc.) will do it.

Eeek lucky that didn't go bang

Repairs in the side wall is a no no.

Sorry, standard tyre fitter repairs in the sidewall are not allowed. Major repairs in the sidewall are.

Looks more like she clipped a rock in a muddy bank/roed edge.

Prob wont of felt it as its just a nic.

Hankooks do have soft walls despite being good tyres

Whether or not it can be repaired, I wouldn't want it. Lucky it was found while parked.

You're quoting standards and diagrams for "Minor repairs".

Google "Major Tyre Repairs", and the first link has information on the subject. :nerd:

Would you want it repaired though?

I wouldnt...

I've had tyres major repaired by Castle Tyres before. Not cheap, but cheaper than a new tyre. In fact, I'm still running the car on one I had done two years ago.

I read the info and for a major repair it has to be sent away, or better still thrown in the bin.

I wouldn't want to drive a car with a tyre that has had a side wall repaired.

The main points of the BSAUI59f regulations are:

Tyres can only be repaired in the area marked 'T'or shown in blue in our diagram.

There is no limit to the amount of repairs that can be carried out, as long as the puncture repair patches do not overlap. Tyre repairs covered by a British Standard — BSAU159f:1990 split repairs into two categories - minor repairs that can be carried out by our trained staff and major repairs that need to be sent away for factory repairs.

I dont think he'll bother. Looking at the tread, it looks nearly gone anyway. Not worth sending off or repairing by the looks of it.

But maybe thats the camera angle

Been using Castle Tyres for years...Had a tyre revulcanised once there after it was rejected for repair at another Tyre Garage for the same reason..

A top job was done...but its a bit far from Sheffield ;)

They're a couple of rare fellas, those two aren't they. Don't mince their words at all, and cleanliness isn't probably their best virtue, but like you say they do a good job. It's a bit far from me aswell, but on a tyre with less than 500 miles on it and a nail in the side, it was worth it for me. Cost of the repair and diesel to have it done was half the price of a new tyre.

That's their website info only, which essentially puts the repair into the realms of non profitable in the customers eyes. That's not always the case as you may find you have a major repair centre on your doorstep. The fact that "they" have to send them away is irrelevant. And the reason I chose that particular link was simply because (for ease) it was the first google result. There are other places (as posted later) which have a better idea of what to do when a customer has a puncture, rather than quoting standards for minor repairs and selling them a new tyre.

However, as pointed out it might be that the tyre in question is not worth the repair due to the amount of tread left, but the next time a tyre fitter tells you it's illegal to repair them outside of "Area T" on the drawing, you can correct him.

Before I worked on the railway I worked for Kenning tyre services for a good few years,

Yes, sidewall damaged could be repaired, even on car tyres. they got sent away to a specialist repairer. one I remember was called  "Vag u Lug "

Excellent safe repair

I'm in two minds but think I'll just replace it.....

Tread wise all four tyres were new last year and the fronts (this is the drivers side front tyre) both have at least around 5mm of tread left so part of me thinks get it repaired if possible. But the fact that I also use her car to go to work every so often which is motorway miles makes me think bin it and get a replacement......... and ground the Mrs for a month. ;)

As the driver, she's responsible for the health and roadworthiness of her vehicle. "It didn't do it by itself" ..... is a phrase I would save for later rather than an opening gambit. Have had mates drink extensively in an animated fashion having escaped the house pursued by a thrown (hot) tray of chicken tikka bites! :)

Alternatively, scrap or trade the car telling her she'd broken it beyond recourse or repair.... :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I had similar damage to a tyre that resulted from driving it a short distance whilst almost flat. It was pinching of the tyre between the rim and the road

A school friend's Dad owned a tyre repair place - The Super Tyre Co in Leicester.  Long gone now.  http://imageleicestershire.org.uk/view-item?i=2425&WINID=1423644915247

The actual repair shop was a dirty hole.  The men were hard and horny handed.

Ground out rubber is full of carbon black and it gets everywhere.

Good preparation for working at Dunlop years later.

I can't imagine any car tyre being more than marginally economic for a sidewall repair.  Presumably the factory has to verify the extent of carcase damage?

Just to say i got a replacement and had it replaced.... Only just managed it though as the tyre has been discontinued by Hankook so i had to get it from an online supplier who sent it over from Germany and then had it fitted at one of their tyre fitting places.

whats the condition of the opposing tyre ?

All four tyres were bought around a year ago so at least 6mm of tread left on the opposing tyre.... The rears have even more on them.
