Car wont Start after changing headlight bulbs Ambiente 2006 1.6

Featured Replies

I changed my headlight bulbs which took me about a hour cause I changed them without taking the headlights out. Turn the headlights on and the bulbs are working. Then I vacuumed the car.

Few hours later I went out to check the headlight again, turned it on and still works. Then I went in the car and tried starting the engine but get a fast repeated clicking sound then I put the headlights on and they still come on but soon as I do the handbrake warning light starts flashing.

Any advise?

you've flattened the battery .

As above, the battery is flat.

How does changing the headlight bulbs flatten the battery?

did you have the ignition on when chaining the bulbs radio on interior lights on when cleaning ?

It is likely the battery was already on its way out.

Leaving the headlights on without the engine running, plus the interior lights being on whilst hoovering the car has been enough to finish it off.

I just turned on the headlight for a min or 2. Never turned them constantly on with the ignition off. Headlights wont work unless keys in ignition. Yeah when I open the door for vacuuming the interior lights come on, cigarette lighter usb charger comes on without keys in the ignition. Why is that?

On some cars the lighter socket is switched via the ignition switch, whereas on others it's powered all the time. The Octavia is one of the latter.

Yep, the 12V cigarette lighter is permanent live. Anything plugged in overnight will be drawing power.

I once plugged in a cool box into the socket in the boot whilst on holiday, not realising that it was still being powered when the engine was off.

We had ice cold drinks but nearly ended up stranded with a struggling battery!

Update:

AA breakdown patrol van came down and jump started the car so everything is ok now. The AA man try to sell me a car battery for £77 and he was so desperate to sell it to me he said I can pay him in 2 weeks time when I said to him I had no dosh at the moment.

So unless I unplug the usb charger it still be live even when I lock the car?

I can see a parrot system installed in the car and I don't know how to turn it off and I can see the red/green lights on it when I lock the door so I assume that is live as well unless I know how to turn the bloody thing off.

I can see the battery connections/terminals need cleaning, whats the best way to clean them?

Yes. Your USB charger will stay on.

Your parrot should turn itself off say 10 seconds after the ignition goes off. What parrot kit do you have?

I think I got this parrot model:

No it doesn't turn off I can still see the red/green lights after I locked my car.

Apart from the cigarette lighter what else stays on live after locking the car?

I fear my battery will be flat again tomorrow morning

I have a ck3100, which has a display. It disconnects from the phone when the ignition goes off, does yours?

Apart from the fag lighter a lot of things can stay live, mainly controllers.

have a look in the dashcam thread & put in a second charger on a switched fuse.  It saves having to remember to unplug dashcams, GPS's etc.

From the parrot CK3000 FAQ (http://www.parrot.com/uk/support/parrotck3000evolution/):

When I switch the engine off, the red and green lights remain on

The installation of the power cable has to be checked:
  • The red cable must be 12V Permanent ? Always powered
  • The orange cable must connected to the 12V after-contact (ignition switched live)
  • The black cable must be connected to the ground

If yours is staying on the it sounds like it hasn't been correctly fitted. There isn't an ignition switched power cable for the stereo so it's possible that both red and orange have been wired into a permanent live. All pretty easy to check with a multimeter if the parrot is accessible.

If this is the case you should run a new wire from the fusebox which IS a switched live and connect it to the correct wire for the parrot.

Edit:

I just had a google as it's probably been fitted using a SOT adapter like this one, you can see an additional red wire that should be connected to a switched live so that's the one you want to check. Obviously this is only the case if a SOT adapter was used.

How do I disable the device? It already came installed on the car when I bought it and I don't need it.

You'll need to find out how it has been installed and remove it :)

I mean don't remove it but somehow disable it by not sending electricity to it.

How long have you owed the car?

Is the fuse box on the driver side or passenger side?

You will still need to find it first. There are numerous ways to install parrots and it will depend on who did it to how easy it is to remove or disable. It's very unlikely that a new fuse will have been fitted for it.

I'd start by removing the central dash topbox (be careful of the hazard light wiring), from there you can see the top of the stereo. If you're lucky, you should see that an adaptor has been fitted to the existing loom between the stereo and the car. If this is the case, you can just unplug both ends and plug the stereo directly into the car again.

There are two fuseboxes, one in the engine bay and the other is normally on the drivers side.

There must be a fuse from the fuse box powering it where I can just remove the fuse to stop it right?

There might be, or it is randomly connected into another switched live somewhere (heated rear screen, wipers etc)
