Side-Assist-Plus for the O3

Featured Replies

My recent projekt is to install Side-Assist-Plus from the A3 8V

At the next week, i install the Master and Slave units in the rear bumper.

At first i must create a wiring harness from the rear bumper to both side view mirrors for LEDs.

The units must be plugged in to extended CAN.

Here some pictures :

Best of luck with that. Id imagine getting it wired in correctly and then coded to work will be a bit of a nightmare...but perhaps not if you really know your stuff!

It really annoyed me that this wasn't available as a factory option, even though lane assist was...out of the two I find this much more useful. Best of luck to your project!

What does it do exactly?

Side Assist "Plus"

Everything at a glance.

The optional "Side Assist" can help if you want to change lanes: warning lights in the exterior mirrors inform within the limits of the system on vehicles that are approaching you. For stationary objects or approaching vehicles is no warning. Likewise, vehicles that are removed more than one lane ignored. The "Side Assist" is activated via a button and operates from a speed of 60 km / h. To be able to assess situations better and minimize risks - of course not, without having seen himself in the mirror. The optional combination with "Lane Assist" You will also relieved. LDP "Lane Assist" into account, within the limits of the system on longer routes with monotonous driving situations, helping to avoid accidents with decreasing concentration as possible: More than a camera module in the interior mirror the lane markings are detected and evaluated the position of the vehicle. Should the car is now on its track, warns of "Lane Assist" with a slight counter-steering.

By "Side Assist Plus" you benefit compared to the individual systems "Side Assist" and "Lane Assist" of additional functionalities: this system, for example, your intention to change lanes, takes place during reverse traffic in addition to steering intervention a slight vibration of the steering wheel adds by the LEDs in the exterior mirrors.

mazda 6 cars have the same..  Looking forward to see how you get on.

Next step is to install the units in the rear bumper, the wire harness and the LEDs into the original mirror caps.

Harness is finished and already installed in the car, it's missing the connection to the doors and the wiring harness in the door to the mirror, the LEDs should arrive next week.

Well done.
How long did it take to install?

Maybe 4-5 hours, but many testing hours

How critical is the precise angle/location of the RADAR units compared to the original Audi installation?

Very cool well done Trust2k

it will not get very definitely mm, but nevertheless will calibrate times and eventually re-adjust it the system.

Wow!  Very impressive retro-fit.

Nice job

While my heart bleeds a little bit when seeing the inside of the car, it's pretty cool to see what they have hidden there and what you have managed to squeeze in.

Will the LEDs light up everytime someone is passing you on either side? I was driving to Koblenz yesterday and overtook a few Mercs and I could always see the red waring light in their mirror. I thought it would be a bit distracting.

How do you plan to install the LEDs to make them look as close to OEM as possible?

I will mill a hole in the cap and clip LEDs, these are then lie flat on the painted plastic.

On the whole a very brave undertaking, not just in respect of the sensors, but also the loom/LED's and most notably the coding!

Well done!

Looks very professional… always worrying that when doing this kinda stuff it can look a little DIY (I've seen a good few examples of peoples attempts to fit things like aftermarket reversing sensors).

Well done!

That looks awesome! I hope you plan on making a similar guide for this as you did for the touch free boot.
