Battery in the boot

When people put the battery in the boot, where do they put the top cover that has all of the fuses and other cables? :)

+1

I would guess you need to make up some sort of custom fuse box under the bonnet somewhere to house them all in.

If you don't want so many you could double up on the wiring and reduce the amount of fuses, but you would need to consider which circuits you put together and work out a safe size fuse for the current drawn by the combined items.

I think I would buy a universal fuse box and wire them through that, you will need some sort of power distribution block under the bonnet too where your cable from battery comes into the engine bay.

Take a look at BMW's in your local scrappy,as a lot of them run battery's in the boot and have some nice distribution blocks etc as standard :)

Mine's all just left in the engine bay.  It's starting to look a bit manky so might need to contemplate changing it, but for now its tucked out the way behind/below the N/S headlight.

picture?

Not sure I have one, but just imagine the battery top fuse box just rattling around with no lid on behind a headlight :D  Then the main feed goes to the battery in the boot via 4 metres+ of marine grade power cable.

nice!

Plan with mine is to mount it in a box which will be secured to the strut brace. I've had to extend the main earth to the starter area and the alternator wire. I just chopped the excess plastic off so I need some sort of 15x15x5cm box which I'm yet to source.

Will get some pics this weekend.

How many fuses are there?

And whats the highest rated one?

8 or 9 big ones and 4 standard plug in jobbies on mine, but its not a dirty diesel :P Starter fuse is 175A on the 1.8T, not sure the diesel starter is even fused.

Are you doing it for weight dist or for space under the bonnet?

I did it mainly for the former but it freed up space for my water methanol system. :)

space under bonnet

I have really got to wonder what everyday benefit there is to that. Someone please enlighten me !

The rest of the engine and gubbins fits in?!

Sorry I'm confused. You mean for just modding ? As when I bought my car all the engine and gubbins seemed to already be there :D

Well yes generally for modding :P

I have an intercooler pipe running right through where the battery/airbox would normally go and the intake moved where the battery would have been. I think devon has a similar arrangement.

Why does it need to give a everyday benefit?

As above,creates room to put a bigger filter/catch can/pipework etc :)

Plus easier access to the PAS pump :)

Good point :)

Always thought it's a stupid place for the pas fluid res fill point.

I would do it just because removing over 20kg from above the front wheels is a jolly good idea.

And a fairly easy one at that too as the rest of the weight loss up front tends to be minimal and expensive

A little off topic but.... Is it possible to move the engine back an inch?

Everything is possible... economically viable is another matter. Would depend on the engine as the turbo's on Fabia's tend to be mounted at the back of the engine leaving very little wriggle room between engine and firewall. Then you'd need to consider engine mounts, will the drive shafts be ok, gearbox linkage as well as extending/shortening a raft of pipes.

Edit: an the exhaust, dog bone mount...

Does the battery really weight that much !

Some good points esp. the steering fluid fill, that is rather annoying having had to remove the battery to check it before I can confirm it is rather annoying situation.
