Underwhelmed vs Polo.

SWMBO is quite fancying swapping her Fabia vRS for a new Polo GTI (1.8T) at the moment. The small boot is the only barrier to that really. Nothing in the mk3 Fabia range to interest her sadly.

New Polo GTI does look good - I had the 1.8 GTI back in 2006.  I was looking at the new 2015 variant also and was shocked by the incredibly small boot space approx 210 litres, am sure the old GTI was approaching 300 litres which is bare minimum IMHO.

Not sure why this is so limited as all models below GTI are traditional small hatchback boot size - think because of spare wheel and false floor(?) - but this seriously dents my enthusiasm for the new GTI model.

well,

Enjoy the the swap to Korea, too many underwhelming reviews for the i20's current engines for my liking but so long as your happy that's all that matters. I would agree with the i10 though, I wasn't overly impressed with the Citygo I had as a courtesy car, felt too basic for me.

Going back to my original thread, yesterday I took the Polo SE 75TDi BMT in metallic black for a drive over a good variety of surfaces and there is no denying the quality of the car. The engine despite its modest power pulled well up a decent hill and has a nice throaty 3 cylinder sound. It was was subdued at 70 mph on a dual carriageway in cruise control. It is no ball of fire but I don`t drive like that anyway although I dont doodle along. There had been crticism about the new 3 cylinder diesel being a "like a hammer" on start up but it is better than my current Fabia.

The salesman has been great and as the car was a cancelled order I got a total of around £1300 off the price of the car including the "deposit contribution", a years free insurance and 3 years servicing for £149.

So after nearly 8 years of Skoda ownership I am going over to a Volkswagen. Looking forward to the beginning of March

the engines are the only real compromise, the 86 PS does feel slower than the 75 TDi in my greenline and the 75PS in the wifes citigo

but the interior finish and spec compensates for it,

as the engines are non turbo you need to give them a bit of wellie as peak power is at 6000 rpm, and the cars I drove had less than 20 miles on them so was not going to do that

both cars (i20 and i10) were significantly quieter than our skodas, the dash layout is far better and to me appears more modern

the i20 SE gave me all my requirements (cruise, LED DRL's, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, electric windows all round, spare wheel not can of goo, cradle for phone, variable boot floot etc) without resorting to options and due to that car was available for delivery 1st march

wifes i10 has more spec than her citigo elegance greentech, more comfortable to drive and did not seem to built to a price (ie lack of sound proofing, no rear wheel arch liners, no light in the boot etc)

on the test drive it was obvious both cars were slower than our current skodas but not that much slower, handling was good, ride was not as firm as the skoda but more comfortable, driving position was good and everything within easy reach of the driver

and although the wifes car was in negative equity by nearly a thousand they increase the offer for it so she had a small bit and due to where she works got nearly an additional £1000 off as well

Had a good look around the Fabia at Lightcliffe Skoda (Rainworth) the other day, as SWMBO was potentially looking at changing her Citigo Sport.... I really am struggling to see what they are playing at.

The high (for a Fabia) RRP must be becasue of the car of the year win.... Very few offers on the table, whilst the Polo is offering a £1500 deposit contribution and a "not-bending-you-over" finance package. Beyond base spec the two are scarily close for price.

I know that Skoda should be able to "stand on it's own" marque wise and move from under VW's shadow, but I'm struggling to find a reason to choose the Fabia at the moment  :nerd:

What Car appears to have given the car of the year award it seems because of a particular engine, and were not because

of ones that did not impress, or that is who What Car reviews appear to show.

Surely Skoda CZ & UK knew the pricing for sales and RRP's before any Advertising Campaigns or Awards on cars not

yet being driven by any paying customers.

Simply Clever maybe, but Fortune Tellers surely they are not.

Tom,

Polo GTI better than an S1 boot?

Sorry a bit off topic.

Edited by vrskeith

I too looked at the polo but put off by a 6 month wait if you added any options and the attitude of the sales staff when you say you want to swap a fabia

my short list was

fabia 3 (tried twice to get a test drive look at it with no success so walked away)

polo (long lead times and snooty sales staff)

i20 (good spec, slightly worse engines and available within weeks as the SE is pretty much fully loaded)

time will tell if a wise move, the i10 is miles ahead of the citigo in spec and refinement internally, just a shame the 86PS engine feels slower than the 75PS citigo

Probably quite similar. S1 is manual only though so sadly no use to SWMBO! ;-)

Deep pockets needed Polo 1.8gti dsg £26750 nice car but that price brings a lot of competition into the frame, like mk3 Octavia VRS DSG.

VW gave me them as 3 door Polo GTI 1.8 TSI £17,112,  & 5 door £17,671.

That was this afternoon.

EDIT, PS

Looking at the VW Website now, no idea where he got that price from,

must have liked me, or thought i wanted an old discontinued model.

PPS

I should take up on that price.

They should be ,

3 door Polo GTI DSG £20,095

5 door  "        "      "     £20,725

They are nowhere near that price matey. I think you might have crossed wires there!

Yeah I'd prefer an S3 to an S1 any day, beats it for value for sure. The Polo GTI is abit of a bargain on a PCP tho. Boot too tiny however. If there was a Polo GTI estate I'd be swapping our furby for one without a doubt.

The polo gti 1.8 dsg 5 door price given by lookers vw preston £26 750. Monday this week. I will be happy if I am wrong.

I have just priced one online to my spec £21.800'so I agree the pillock has given me crap info. That price is with cruise reversing sensors electric fold in mirrors. These extras we take for granted in our so called lower class skodas,in fact the specis rubbish compared to my Blackline but then most cars are.

If you go through drive the deal, you can get a 3 door red with winter pack, light and sight pack, Cruise pack, sport button which changes the settings of the dampers (I think) climate control for just under £17000

I must also add, that includes the! £1000 deposit contribution if you take out finance with them which won't be for everybody

Did you ever try to step out from a 3-door car at a thight parking lot? ::)

When to look at New Fabia and felt mightily underwhelmed by it. I felt that it wasn't a massive improvement over my current Fabia. No denying that the quality is better but it felt so ordinary. It was surprising how claustrophobic the SEL felt with sports seats. The boot was full of balloons so was difficult to judge the boot size. And then there is the price.....

So went around to the Volkswagen dealer and much preferred the Polo for not much more more. Got a good deal on a cancelled order of a SE 75TDi 5 door in metallic black with cruise/parking & light sight packs. Classier car all round.

Well an update. I have now had my new Polo SE 1.4TDi BMT for nearly a fortnight. And I have to say I am well impressed! The new 3 cylinder diesel 1.4 engine has a nice throaty sound and is refined and quiet at most speeds unless you give it some gas to acelerate. I was worried that it wouldnt have the torque of the 1.6 being 30 ps less but it isnt far off of it and feels more like a traditional diesel engine for a torque point of view. I am getting over 60 miles to the gallon with only 300 miles on the clock so far. on average 10 miles to the gallon more than the Fabia.

I only had the parking sensors as the car was a cancelled order but you dont realise how useful something is until you use it! Okay the Polo hasnt the space of my Fabia estate but we dont need it anymore. The customer service from Eurocanterbury was faultless and made you feel valued whether you were buying a Polo or Scirocco GTI

I am glad I bought a Polo and not a new Fabia. Oh....and the headlights are amazing after a Fabia II!

good to hear you are happy with the new motor and got good service from the dealer

I get the feeling the fabia 3 is not selling as well as skoda would have liked, but it is selling better than the rapid when it was first released as you can see a lot fewer negative comments for it  than the rapid when it was launched

I am liking my i20 even after only 200 miles the engine is a lot better and starting to approach the power of my GLII so may be the engines are not as behind VAG as I initially thought and could have been both vehicles I test drove had less than 20 miles on the clock

Rapids aren't selling at all.. that's why Skoda would have given me £4000 for my 12.5 year old Mk1 and 0%apr.. I would imagine the rapid to be discontinued before long.. so if you have one.. get rid is my advice.
