Octavia 1.8 tsi MPG ?

Featured Replies

Hi I have just bought a 1.8 tsi and it seems to have a sports car engine in it , coming from a Fabia 1.9 tdi I expected change BUT I get 31 mpg and even when I drive like a nun i can only manage 38.The 6 speed gearbox does not have much difference between 4,5,6 and with such a powerfull engine (160 it says in the friendly manual) gear changes are not needed on A roads. Is there a problem maybe or should I just stop looking at the MPG and enjoy the new VAG power !

TSI or TFSI?

I reset the average MPG display when we got the car 6 months ago and it's currently showing 37.something mpg after arout 5000 miles - mainly my wife who uses the car though the week to ferry the kids about so mostly town work.

The other day I had to do a 120mile round trip for work on motorways and A roads and managed 44mpg (according to the computer) but that was driving like a granny to maximise my "profit" from the mileage I could claim back! I dare say if you did a long trip at a steady 50mph you could knock on the door of 50mpg if you were lucky (unless you died of boredom first)

I know the computer is usually optimistic but you should be getting a bit better than you're saying. You don't say what type of journeys you're doing either, I find the economy is terrible for short trips from cold, popping to the shops a mile down the road will return about 25mpg!!

But hey - petrol's "cheap" at the moment so just enjoy it! I've just filled up with Shell V Power to see if that makes any difference given that it's now cheaper than standard petrol was a few months ago.

Yup, sounds about the same as mine after 60k miles. :)

Hi Thanks for the replies.

It is a 2007 elegance tsi estate with 94000.So far a 250 mile trip mostly motorway and then pootling around mostly.Morning run on country roads 8 miles so all on choke.

However 40 mpg on a 15 mile trip this afternoon with a couple of overtakes and not looking at the computer until I got there. So I do not know , I may look at the spark plugs this weekend if I can find them !

Cheers Keith

The 1.8TSI (CDAA) engine wasn't fitted in the Octavia II until 11/08 although it appeared in the Superb in 09/08.  Could you please post details of your engine code?

Pictures of the TFSI and TSI engines are in the post below.

1.8tsi EA888 (BZB??) was fitted from 2007 onwards in some markets.  I have a Sep 2007 build with a 1.8tsi / 6 sp manual hatch.

To the OP: I've averaged 6.6L/100km (42mpg?) over the last 150,000km - mostly motorway driving at 100kph and working hard to save fuel.  If I get stuck driving around the suburbs (which are a bit different to UK suburbs) then it jumps up near 8l/100 (35mpg??).  That's about what you'll get out of a Gen1 EA888.  I think it's quite good for a 2007 vehicle but the latest Gen 3 EA888s are noticeably better on fuel.

The engine looks like the tsi in the pictures on this forum

The code from the vehicle sticker is :-  JWX  9572    CA  118KW  BZB   delivered 11/08/2007

As I have been looking I found  QG1   now is this the way the car is treated ie type of oil etc or is there a change of hardware or software fitted .I like to service once a year in the warm (based on under 10000 per year at present) and I have been using quite good but not the highest spec parts.

Also does it have a dual mass flywheel as I have heard expensive things about these on this Forum.

All the best Keith

I live and learn. The BZB 1.8TSI engine was fitted to the Octavia II between 06/07 and 10/08. Is your car an import? QG1 means that the car can be set for variable service intervals subject to LongLife oil (ie one meeting spec VW 504 00) being used. Service intervals are then the earliest of 2 years or 30,000km - or even earlier if the service indicator calls for a service based on its monitoring of how the car is driven. If you want to have the car serviced every year then have it put on to fixed service intervals, or alternatively just monitor the mileage and date like in the good old days. Any VW 502 00 spec oil is suitable for fixed service intervals. And yes, your car has a DMF.

My 1.8TSI is a 4X4 so fuel consumption will be higher than yours. The car has averaged 32.09 mpg over the 7786 miles I have owned it. It is a very smooth engine with a nice level torque band from 1500 to 4500 rpm, and max power developed between 4500 and 6200 rpm. I really like the way the engine performs. :)

That can't be right cos mine was made early/mid 08, held back because of that damage to that enormous VAG car stock in Germany with the huge hailstorm, registered sept 58plate where it was gonna be an 08, and it definitely has the TSI engine in the picture, not the TFSI above it.

I have rechecked the 'mounting date' for the CDAA engine in ETKA and the date is as I quoted. However the BZB version of 1.8TSI was around earlier as I mentioned in my post above yours. Is yours that earlier engine version or is ETKA wrong on timing?

yes, it has DMF.  I've done 150,000km (last 100k with a Bluefin tune) without issue.  I think the clutch is at the end of it's life (high pedal) but there's no slippage.

Just change the service interval over to fixed interval (it's in the manual IIRC)

Use good filters (Mann or Mahle) and good quality, full synthetic oil (I swap between 504 & 502 but 504 is probably the better choice) in one of the major brands (Shell, Castrol, Mobil1).

Cabin filter every 12 months, air and fuel filter around 45-60,000, spark plugs around 60,000-90,000.  It might be worth changing the coil packs & keep the old ones as spares.

Maybe you'll get some carbon fouling in the intake but that can be reduced with a chemical clean similar to this:

Remap is worthwhile as is removing the stage1 catcon up next to the turbo outlet.

There are lots of cheap tweaks you can do to these cars to make them just a bit better than they already are.
