Booo!

Not brave enough Richard,.. thought about the Leyton House scheme but would need a re-spray if I got bored with it. The other option is a fluorescent version for the highlights instead of orange, as its not dissimilar to the Mercedes F1 Petronas colour they currently use

Have to say this is a quality thread and I'm really enjoying it and all the piccies so keep it coming.

I'm also a bit envious of the time and facilities you seem to have to do it and wish I was in the same position...

Thanks Shark and Sko,. and thanks to all those following the thread, I'll do my best to keep it interesting for you all. Not got much time at the moment, hence sourcing and fiddling with parts.

I popped the AN6 fittings round to a friendly neighbourhood TIG welder along with the original fuel rail, and in exchange for 5 metres of wrongly ordered 3 inch ali tubing, will get it done... probably pick it up a week Saturday or so, be nice to close the last few orifices on the engine.

If I get a chance at the weekend I might have another go at mounting the steering rack, wasn't happy with the previous attempt, its a bit tricky as it needs to be mounted at an angle so the spline is orientated correctly. Now got some bigger box section for the mounting brackets.

Working on James DT project and grass cutting amongst other things which are getting in the way of work on the car. Managed to get some time to bead some tubes: the ones on the storm were supplied un-beaded and I had problems with hoses coming off, which isn't going to happen on this badboy. Got myself a beading machine a while ago and 30 metres of tube to practice on... some results below:

Had a go at sorting the steering rack arrangement out, wasn't 100% happy with the previous attempt. Had to go off piste with the design as the book car used an MX5 rack, which is mounted "flat" I've used an escort fast rack (2.4 turns)  which needs to be mounted on the co*k so the spindle is orientated correctly. In its home habitat it's usually mounted on a bulkhead or cross member, sadly I've neither hence the "subframe" arrangement.

If I have chance next weekend I'll take a look at the rad mounting arrangement's

2.4 lock to lock? That's pretty quick.

What's the steering lock going to be like? I'm assuming there could be a fairly large angle as there won't be any inner arches etc....

Steering lock / turning circle is pretty ****e on these cars tbh especially with no power assistance, best way to turn them round is to donut.. Rack's quick to catch the back end when you get a touch of the throttle off oversteers. Looking forward to giving it a test round paddock bend.  :D

The fuel rail saga rolls on that is until now.. I took the old rail off to be modded with the AN6 fittings "cant be done it'll fall apart cause its glued together..." Bol***** I thought for a fleating second. Found another company selling a rail a bit cheaper than the first one but it looked pants, beggars can't be choosers so ordered one on Sunday and it arrived today. Its turned up today with no marks or damage, identical to the one I originally sent back... billet, black, anodised, nice and shiny... £24 cheaper to boot.. Don't bother with SiCo developments for bits, though full respect to JamSports for coming up with the goods. :)

I'll shove it on the engine later and grab an image.

Didn't take long for that bubble to burst,.. doesn't fit... :swear:  :swear:  :swear:  :@

The mounts are too close together, You can see I have moved the mountings across on the blocks and it still doesn't fit. though with only one screw holding each of the mounts this would be unacceptable anyhow. You pay good money for something to be fit for purpose and you get a pile of sh*te, and that's from two suppliers now. Must be a crap product at the end of the day. Paypal dispute number two coming up...

isnt that the fancy fuel rail that guy kept messing you about with? :S

Yep, from a different supplier which I believe he uses to source his parts. Wasn't expecting the same again, the one on the Jamsport website was considerably different. No doub't it'll be another refund a few weeks down the line and still no fuel rail. There is another available from elsewhere, though it's considerably more expensive at over £300. I have to consider if it's worth it or go back to the oem rail.

OooOooo, Cosworth bits, very nice.

Only a few,.. pistons etc., mixed up with a few other choice parts, including Newman Cams, ARP, Mahle, Raceline and Rotrex. Always fancied the shopping list on the side of the car but too chav now. Might go for a Kill Count List instead including wildlife (except foxes ;) ) grannies, corsa's and spaxo's. and anything Audi is game on. :D

Sorry Taylor didn't see your post, great diary that one, been following it myself, took some work to get the engine in the car.

Loads of progress for me , just not on the car... finished James A level project, handed in, marked and awaiting moderation, awarded an A grade so one step closer to Uni.

Took James and a couple of his mates karting as a treat for his 18th, entered them into a 3 hour endurance race, brilliant night, they called themselves Stone Dead Last, whci was a totally inappropriate name, grid of 34 karts and they did rather well, irritating the big boys..   despite a few yellow flag transgressions and a rollocking from the stewards.. We're going to do another, take it a bit more seriously and really hack off the big boys, :D  I'll leave it to James to fill in the details at the meet..

Wet room saga still going on, though nearly done, tile sealing and odd jobs this weekend,, oh and I can now take a shower before the meet. :notme:

Got some rad mounts so will try and find some time at the weekend to at least do something on the car and update the thread.

A few images below in no particular order summing up my last few weekends..

Nice little project going on here, I was going to throw in a link to my mate James at ARF but seems you already know about him :)

He also has a tidy kit car.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks SNH, things are on hold for a short while as I've to finish my MA which should be all done by July. We've a small matter of building a winning soapbox for a derby near Brighton in September, a load of kit car guys from SKCC have entered so it should be total carnage. Then back on the car.

Hoping to get back on the car soon, collected a few bits to crack on when I can. Got a Renault scenic steering column to use, it has all the right switches on the stalks saving switches on the dash. I can also use the airbag clockspring for extra buttons on the steering wheel. Got an OMP wheel but having problems with the boss, as usual got sent a load of crap from YB Racing so trying to get that sorted. In the meantime knocking up a soapbox for a race on the 13th september, good for my welding practice, in between finally finishing my MA dissertation

since when does a ’soapbox’ have rose joints?

What’s wrong with a few bits of 6”x4” and a few BFO bolts to hold the pram wheels on?  :D

No pram wheels near this beaut!.. ...kids BMX wheels instead..

Long story on the rod ends Martin.. had a few left from the v-storm build,.. failed gear change linkage..

I've also uprated and reinforced the stub axles for the front to avoid the collapsing "pram wheel" scenario now 12mm instead of 8mm. Got to fit some towing eyes as well, here's some I made earlier.. :D

Did I mention the Tillett seat?... :D
