ABS fault - possible control module gone

Featured Replies

Thought I would put up the faults i am getting with VCDS.  Unfortunately despite a topped up battery (although it's quality / life is as yet unknown....) I am still often getting the ABS/ASR lights come up, and the handbrake light start flashing along with 3 fairly loud beeps.

Here's a snippet of faults relating to it.  Nothing else ABS related exists

I am thinking possibly fit new good battery and check alternator output still tip-top before looking at replacing the ABS unit?  As a guide, despite having flat batteries in the past, I have never had anything like these symptoms before. :)

I should also add it's not a permanent warning - So I have ruled out fuse 25 being shot.

This evening i had driven about 3 miles fine, but then I decided to floor 2nd gear for a laugh (who wouldn't.....) and the warning lights all came up right away.  I am thinking perhaps the sudden burst of acceleration suddenly gave the traction control something to do (would usually start the ASR light flashing.....) and then threw a wobbly.  More and more I think about it, I wonder if the battery is simply not putting out good voltage.

Also, I noted (and not sure if normal that when starting) the red battery light is staying on with the ignition sequence.  It goes out once the engine is running.  I have assumed that is normal as I can't remember if usually the battery light goes out on ignition sequence prior to starting the engine.  Be good if someone with a normal fabia vRS could confirm / deny that assumption please?

Warning lights all came on this morning before I even had started the car.  Just on turning ignition on.  Checked fuse 25 - all OK.  Car started OK too.

You've checked the strip-fuse in the battery-box fuse area, right?

  • Author

Nope, I didn't think the Vrs had a fuse there related to the abs etc. I know the 1.4 16v suffers though.

Every Fabia with ABS is gonna have that strip fuse. May not be in exactly the same position in every case, but will still be in that row of 6 somewhere.

Will check that out, thanks

Well, I found a bust strip fuse in the engine bay which got my hopes up,  But same symptoms seem occurring after fitting new fuse.

I am getting this fault in the engine section, after clearing codes.  This comes back

Have you driven it since fixing the fuse?

If not try taking it round the block, then have another look.

Shall do.  I did get confused why the ABS voltage code had gone from 03 ABS section (as shown in first post) yet all the warning lights were on still.

I am heading out at 8 to play tennis, so shall take my laptop with me to ensure all is OK.  I am not sure of the next step.  I assume replace the battery but the car battery seems to be OK.

PS: This is the broken fuse I replaced tonight,  I am not sure if anyone can verify from this picture it is the one for the ABS controller??  It was second from the right I think.

I reckon it's probably fixed, but the engine ECU is looking to see 'good behaviour' from the ABS module before it will abandon telling you there's a problem.

Well, it's a waiting game now.  My mate rigged up a bespoke standalone fuse setup in place of this strip fuse and everything has been working as it should.  points to possible issue with the box but fingers crossed all is well and that fuse is holding up and all ABS/ASR functions are working as they should.

I think long term I need to rethink the whole engine bay fuse situation.

I'm on the hunt for a suitable box (preferably some sort of proper electricerty one) to house mine in to protect them from the elements. Can't remember the dimensions now but I think its 15cm x 15cm x 5cm if you've cut all the excess plastic off the old battery cover.

Had this happen to my car today, looked at the bar fuses and found one cracked across. Too late to take it for a spin and see if it clears the fault, but glad I found a definite fault likely to be the cause.

Thanks
