VRS Oil Consumption Question.

Featured Replies

Hi all, we've had our vrs for 9 almost 10 months. we bought it with 19696 miles on and we've just clocked 24943, (5247 miles). The oil light has just come on AGAIN and I've put in ANOTHER litre, (just emptied the 5L can we bought about 7 months ago), this is the 5th top up we've had to do, all of them about a litre. This works out at 524.7 miles per 0.5L of oil, which i think is a bit excessive. I've read a few topics on here but I'm not sure how to go about complaining, is there a preferred route to take or 'model' letter/email i can send out. Would like to get this sorted ASAP as our 1 year Skoda Warranty runs out in April.

Take it back to the dealer?

go back to the stealer asap and ask them to carry out an oil weight test, email skoda uk too so its logged on their system as a fault under warranty.

they 'might' ask you to pay for it which is why id get skoda uk involved, their phone number is on the website under contact us

tell skoda your not a happy driver which is what they model their sales on

George will be around soon with more detailed information ;)

I am getting an oil test done on mine now. I have to take it back when it has done as close to 1000kms as I can get it. The car is using about 600ml + per 1000km . So with new oil I suppose it will use less and pass the test  . It should fail, then they will do the oil jets and breather mod. Who would have known that they can use oil in Australia as well

Just been onto customer services, they're setting up a case. They also asked what my expected outcome is? I said i would like the newer VRS engine, the one without problems. lol.

That will never happen I'm afraid.

if you have the CAVE engine code, you will get a new or reconditioned CAVE unit.

Expected outcome? A car with an engine which burns oil at a satisfactory rate, and is fit for purpose.

Not an engine with a drinking problem

Expected outcome? Mirror that of other owners who managed to (after having Skoda and dealers being dragged there kicking and screaming) get a replacement/ factory refurbished new engine fitted under warranty by Skoda UK at franchised dealers, followed by 2 years warranty on engine plus anything else you can attain from them in negotiation. As well as having an engine as it was intended to be rather than a moving advert for Castrol Edge FST.

Lodge a case using complaint form on Skoda UK website, call Skoda Customer Service to get a case number, establish the case handlers name, and take careful note of dates of oil checks and top ups, with the mileage and amount of oil added. I managed weekly checks, and kept records including mileage, amount of oil, receipts for oil and so on.

Good luck, and I hope you are successful in getting new engine. It's worth it, the new engines when run in are mighty pokey when run on Momentum only.

That will never happen I'm afraid.

well this isn't true you get a CAVE engine with uprated internals not a reconditioned cave its essentially a CTHE I asked the dealer about this when going through the rigmarole myself

Refurnished in the VW Plant with upgraded parts.,

or is it actually a CAVE as was built on the Production line and available for sale around the world, Brand New, the Block Never previously used.

So if the technician says the Engine coming to them in a Crate includes upgraded parts,

ask them to show you the Components Numbers, are the new 'Squirters Fitted' etc.

Maybe ask, what was the Build Date of the Engine they are about to install, and which factory was it assembled at.

I have been wondering about this reconditioned engine thing Skoda seems to be doing. Mainly because I hope they are not machining any of the internals...as in, grinding the crank, boring the block, machining the head. They really have no right to. I say this because you or any of us that bought a new car, have the right to the first crank shaft grind or re bore etc, not them.

Can the dealers word can be trusted?....... :wonder:

I think your faith in Skoda/VAG is misplaced.

There have been many cases of owners going through two or more CAVE engine replacements that make me think otherwise.....

I've been here long enough and read enough stories to conclude that they just hit and hope.

There is a VW Factory in Germany that Remanufactures Engines, and this is the same factory were the 4 Cylinder Engines and DSG Gearboxes are mated.

They are not some Back Street Re-boring and grinding Company.  They are a huge Corporation with Engine failures of some kind in different models world wide, and are not just melting down engine blocks and remoulding, they Refurnish. ie Rebuild / Re-use.

eg Baunatal Kassel.

All good info guys. Ive lodged my complaint and got a case number, just waiting for my local dealer to call me and arrange an inspection.

lol....melt down blocks.

I understand what you are saying...but, put it this way. I had a car still under warranty. It developed an engine knock. The dealer wanted to grind the crank. I told them they weren't grinding the crank, they would have to get me a new one as I would be entitled to the first grind on it. They ordered me a new one.

That may seem a bit pedantic but even they agreed I was right.

I suppose in these days of throw away cars, maybe it doesn't matter. The cars are too cheap to buy compared to the expense of properly reconditioning the engines let alone all the other problems that can come up with a bit of age. Easier just to buy a new car.

If you look into the 1.4 TSI Twincharger from 2009 & 2010 in the Skoda.

You will see the Earliest cars had engines rebuilt at Dealers.

2009 -2010/11,

then they started fitting Short Units, 2011, and some got Base Engines,

Then the CTHE came out late 2012, and CAVE cars got CAVE Engines as replacements and some early CTHE got Replacement CTHE.

This is in the UK.

In Australia the Owner of a Polo GTI had the court case he Lost, and cars in Australia were getting engines rebuilt.

Ok, so customer services have been back on the phone, they say they've been speaking to Silbury Skoda in Cramlington and the services department manager says he's had cars in before with the oil consumption issue, all of which required replacement engines. However he said that the problem is classsed as wear and tear and isn't covered under the Skoda Approved Used Warranty!!! they said i should receive a Skoda Uk contribution but i will have to pay some of the costs myself. Advice needed please!

I can assure you, after having an approved used warranty myself. I have had a new engine with warranty etc etc and didnt pay a penny. Not for the courtesy car or nothing. It is not wear and tear at all. The engine is known for having this issue. (Although not all affected) who are you speaking to at Skoda?

NOT. A. CHANCE.

This is not wear and tear.

It is a fundamental design/quality control fault.

Skoda know this, so you're gona' have to fight your corner.

The sad thing is, they will no doubt cave in and pay up if you fight back, but you shouldn't need to do this, otherwise what's the point of an Approved used Warranty?

Can the dealers word can be trusted?....... :wonder:

Can't believe I'm quoting myself...

The issue with this warranty is that he warranty company do not cover this issue. Skoda need to stump up for it themselves. That is what happened with me. I got a bill for over 5k. SUK ended up paying in full after I kicked off and gave them a brief list of other owners on here that had already been through it. Cant believe they are still trying their luck. Get an email off to alistair stewart the brand manager. Then one of his team will get you sorted. Luckily I had my service manager on my side. Hes won a lot of awards with skoda and I think he used that to his advantage. I only spoke to SUK 3 times. He did the rest.

It must be Friday.

& it is Friday the 13th.  there is another one in March as well.

ALASDAIR STEWART.  BRAND DIRECTOR SKODA UK.

Ask to talk with John Good, Tom Chadwick, Dan Wilson, Caroline or who ever is being called a Customer Services Manager

at the moment.

Their Memories might stretch to how many 'Gestures' and Agreements and Deals need doing,

because of the Manufacturing, Design or Quality Control issues.

VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK.

Keep the Dealers & Technicians calling it Wear and Tear.   Normal,  Over Blown on the Internet. 'Do not listen to Briskoda', etc etc

Currently speaking to Nathan at Skoda Uk. has anyone got Alasdairs email address?

No need yet.

You have raised your case.  They know what the faults and Issues are and about Manufacturers Warranty and other Companies Warranties.

They know the Faults with some of the 1,800 CAVE engined cars they sold in the UK, and some of the 1,200 CTHE engines

they introduced because of the Faults from 2009-2012.

So basically Skoda UK, Skoda CZ & the Volkswagen Group know they have the responsibility morally and as a Corporation

to sort out their Errors and lack of actions in Contacting Owners and changing Service Guidelines, doing Updates etc.

It will work out OK, there is plenty of previous and recent cases of the Financial Hit being Skoda , VW, Seat & Audi's.

They need to do the right thing.

So these engines are only expected to last 25,000 miles? LOL gotta love Skoda dealers
