vRS TSI DSG - MPG

Featured Replies

Above car, just under 3k on clock, daily commute to work is only 3 miles so I know car has barely warmed up but from full tank only averaging around 23 MPG, previous mk2 would average around 30 mpg (manual), I know I would lose some mpg with the DSG but with the TSI engine thought it would be similar if not a little better, this is with sensible driving, steady away, hope it's gets better, I know wasn't bought for fuel efficiency but expected better than this [emoji15]

No doubt when you give it a 'proper' stretch it achieves realistic figures though?

daily commute to work is only 3 miles

Leave the car at home, you could walk that in 50 minutes or cycle it in 10-15 minutes max.

Haven't really been on a proper drive yet, only had it since the new year, improves on motorway when I've had short journeys, prob 30 / low 30's mk2 would push on late 30's to 40.

Haha true BA, but couldn't get out of bed any earlier than I do now tho [emoji3]

3_miles!?  This weather my manual tsi does over 3 before I even register any oil temp (50C). Low 20s mpg to be expected surely.

May be right Neil, oil is just up at temp as I arrive, last vRS was better this one not so by look of it.

So what was it like for the other 2,820 miles you weren't driving to work ?

Only had it for about 6 weeks so haven't had a 'proper' run out yet, even on weekend and at temperature on short trips still only around 25/26 mpg.

You can't really expect your car to give good MPG when the engine is cold and the air temp is cold at this time of year. It takes me 8-9 miles on a straight A road run to warm the oil properly and It is returning similar figs to my old TFSI. In a nutshell though if you were really worried about MPG you would probably have bought a diesel.

Don't expect good mpg, just didn't realise it would be much lower than previous model, giving same journey etc, unless i wanted to kill the DPF diesel wasn't an option.

If I had a 3 mile commute I would`nt even spark the car up! Buy a bike and enjoy the vRS at weekends :)

I've done 16,200 miles in my vrs DSG.  My long term mpg is 37.4.  On my 45mile commute that is mostly M6/M56 but includes country and city roads I usually manage about 41mpg on the way and about 39mpg on the way home (not sure why it is lower on the way home - especially since the morning drive is uphill as it is south to north while the drive home is downhill as it is north to south :notme: )

Don't expect real figures until 10 000 - 15 000 km or so. Mine settled down at around 14 000 km.

It will get better ;)

My figures are for a manual VRS TSI, but mpg should be within a few percent of a DSG driven similarly.

*My mpg was poor to start off with because I was booting it everywhere.

*During the summer mpg shot up because the kids walked to school and we went on longer summer trips / days out.

*During winter mpg has dropped because the kids and wife refuse to walk anywhere.

*Worst tank full was 23.78mpg, best was 31.53.

*Average mpg over 7,400 mile mostly in-town driving is 27.45mpg.

*Car will do 40mpg on the motorway at 70mph, but I rarely drive on motorways. If I was a mile muncher then 35-40mpg average would be achievable. Around town (London traffic), 25mpg is as good as it gets.

edit: Red lines are Super Unleaded, green are Premium. My car shows ZERO performance or mpg gains when using Super. It's a waste of money.

Its not run in yet either but no car is going to be economical on a 3 mile journey (unless its a plug in electric)

should buy one of these and keep the VRS for weekends/longer trips

Thanks for all the replies, great analysis Orville!! Hopefully will improve as it runs in more, I should bike to work but have no motivation to ha, plus it's too good to drive [emoji6]

36.4mpg (measured brim-to-brim) from the last tank, V Power, vRS TSI DSG Combi.

I'll be very chuffed if i can get 36mpg , thats what my Fabia is doing

A diesel is obviously no good with those miles. Besides, economy is woeful on those too, even on long journeys with cruise set.
