2014 1.6 TDI cr Greenline remap @ Shark

Featured Replies

Heading over to Shark Performance today for the Stage 1 remap. 11,800 miles on the clock and still only getting 54 mpg Max on a full tank (own calculation not the generous MaxiDot - which is still good for the size/weight of the Yeti) even with the rear seats removed.

Tried filling with 1/2 a tank of fuel for less weight but sits around the low 50's and no more.

Thought it might be a tad higher with the way I drive but no. Also a bit tired of the revs slowly dropping on inclines with that long 5th gear and dropping to 4th. Its OK with the boost going over 2000 revs but I don't want to drive at high speeds to maintain boost/mpg.

Still pleased I bought the green line over the 110/140 etc but a nice increase in torque should result in less drops to 4th on the motorway and generally improve the drive :)

Review to follow today and as the weeks/months pass.

10% off with Freedom status on here. Shame I couldn't get over in December for the 25% but better than nothing!

Stopped at services for a quick waz! :D can't wait to give you the difference with the personal and maxidot evidence... Of the Yeti!... Not my waz stop!

How do you feel about the warranty issue here,

Its rather a bit of a gamble specially if dealer becomes funny with it?

At present I'm feeling ok with mine, but I would like the difference a remap would make.

Must have been a long waz :)

Man... that was a long cup of coffee! ;) RIGHT.     :coffee:

Warranty issue:   Every car/truck I've owned has been remapped at both stage two and three.  I haven't had one issue.  These were all out of warranty both VAG 2.0 tdi (Very strong stage 1 tune) and Land rover x2 2.5 5cyl and 2.7 tdv6 units.  I really cant see anything happening with the engine or transmission with this remap as I will discuss in a minute. It's not like me to be a risk taker however I'm tired of waiting for a car to be out of warranty in 2 years just so I can get it to how I want it to be yielding both the refinement, mpg and power it is safely capable of.   I trust Shark as their ethos is about drive-ability and not all out power (if that's what you want)

I also understand that the remap isn't invisible by the dealership.   Easy to see the ecu has had access via their diagnostics they do with every service when searching for fault codes etc.

Even Mansfield Skoda we're flogging Revo maps recently... when I asked if the Revo map would keep my Yeti in warranty they said no! :D Not on the engine and drivetrain anyway. So, Shark performance it was.

--------------

Remap duration: 2.5 hours to remap.  They were rather busy with a couple of random issues with one poor bloke who had both his work van and Audi 3.0 tdi dropping in with ecu and DPF faults etc (nothing to do with Shark as neither vehicle was remapped etc) , but from what I could tell my ECU was being worked on for that time.  2hrs was quoted as they were getting "quicker" at bypassing the Tricore ECU protection but I killed time by marking maths papers  :( :)  Never ending tea and coffee supplies were awesome and I wasn't in a rush.

Initial thoughts: Upon driving away I didn't give it a spanking or much boot as the oil was only at 50 degrees.  I honestly didn't really notice a difference at first.  Seemed pretty similar. I find the 1.6 quite refined and torque(y) in low revs when driving in an urban area. All other units I've had remapped have been larger capacity and going straight into stage 2 or a strong stage 1 achieving 170bhp+  which always gave the initial "WOW" factor where as this one didn't.  (Don't worry...)  At the time I thought this was a good thing... a 1.6 tdi Yeti suddenly taking off at Mach 11... wouldn't instil me with much confidence on the mpg front and reliability. It was like I wanted to notice a massive change immediately but at the same time... I didn't.

Motorway time: This was a different story.  Now that the engine had warmed up and hitting the higher speeds I immediately noticed a definite change in torque.  Hitting those laborious 50mph zones where I'm usually dropping to 4th on those slow inclines... gone.     5th gear/1500rpm/50mph/cruise control on.. it was happy... mpg really high and it sounded happy, not low droning and labouring

The only way I can describe the difference is it's like a hand pushing the car along.  It's an odd feeling I always find once I have a car remapped. I know it's my car... but it's not!

Where before it ran out of steam and needed a drop to 4th.  No need.  Just what I was after.

MPG maxidot:  I'm a stickler for mpg. I never trust the Maxidot as it's always out but with 50 minutes driving I'd hit 74.9 mpg, which is a FIRST with my Greenline.  Regardless of how out the Maxi is, it's still a high mpg readout which must be over 60mpg. Very happy so far.

For the final mile of the journey I decided to give it some right foot, pulls like a train.   If the dyno results from DarrelGB's initial Stage 1 Yeti tinkering is anything to go by (148bhp? Can't remember torque figures) , I must be driving around in what feels like the 140 2.0tdi in standard form.

I'm going to do what I always do, drive around without the back seats in (no need for them) fill the tank up to the neck and give a full tank to tank reading on the next fill up.

Really want to get out in it today.    Have a ride over to York and give some more feedback.  I'll keep this thread going as an update.

Thanks to the lads at Shark performance.  The Yeti is much more comfortable, relaxed (less gear dropping) and economical to drive.

Part 2: Update.

Shark remap cost: Usually £399.   -10% for FREEDOM membership contribution to support the Briskoda forum £12 for the year.  = £359

Update: Right, run to York. Incline motorways, effortless.  Definitely had to drop a cog or get the right foot down in 5th previously, some twisty country roads too...

17 Miles = 63.8 mpg

Before the full tank test as I needed fuel I decided to pop £10 worth of V power and have some fun.  Giving it some beans on the motorway, twisty roads again still gave 58.3 mpg when reset before the high speed run and country blast. Loving it.

Sensible driving resumes tomorrow.

Is the DPF still in place?

My DPF is still on and will be staying on for now.  If it wasn't for the MOT visual checks I'd have a straight down pipe to replace the DPF.  There's also the option of having Shark remove the DPF's internals, weld the DPF section to it looks in place.  Circa £400+    For now, I'm not so fussed.   Don't have the money either.  Shark staff did explain that the way the cut and reweld the DPF canister section it isn't visible on physical inspection.

From February 2014 the inspection of the exhaust system carried out during the MOT will include a visual check for the presence of a DPF canister, if fitted as standard equipment.

Shame I can't go with the Miltek complete removal/straight through pipe.  I do think at some point if I came across an unsympathetic MOT inspector I'd be forking out replacing the removed part.

Insurance increase

Rushing in a bit head strong I didn't realise my insurance company wouldn't accept ANY modification to the vehicle... this is why it was a fully loaded policy for only £250!

Cancellation fee: £53    Refunded pro rata fee: £154

New policy sourced: £315

Also allows scope for installation of uprated anti roll bars for a low fee.  Worth it for the additional £100... should have been an additional £55 had I thought about it more carefully when taking out the initial policy.

Tbh, with DarrellGB selling most of his performance parts I'd quite like to get my hands on the anti roll bars for stability.  If I went down that route I'd have to ditch my current policy and go with someone who was open and happy to insure sensible mods.

My then insurance company wouldn't cover a remap, even though they did for others on here, so I changed to one of the forum sponsors (Adrian Flux). In my case I declared a remap that I didn't yet have, as having insurance in place was a prerequisite (in my mind) to getting the remap - also from Shark.

I'm paying the same this year as I did last year without the remap, so you might find the expense isn't that much other than the cancellation charge. I've cancelled before, taking a £50 hit, as they wanted too much to swap insurance from my old Octavia to the Yeti.

Will update the insurance difference asap.... the "on hold" music is playing as I type... Working out at about £100-£150 difference including the cancellation fee from my current insurer..however future mods like the anti roll bars would be covered at no additional cost..

Definitely makes sense :)

Just a thought.  Now my policy covers the Yeti with the remap installed, if anything catastrophic was to happen (NOT THAT IT WILL!) to the drivetrain or engine (linked to the modification) , I wonder if I would be able to claim on the policy now it's out of warranty?

I know it would affect my future premiums but you hear stories of motorists receiving bills for £4000-£5000 for engine failures. Just some more food for thought...

What policy are you referring to?

Your car insurance won't cover mechanical defects unless specified separately, the increased price is for the increased risk of driving

My new insurance policy that covers my modified Yeti.  Wondered that now I've invalidated my warranty one year into ownership if something catastrophic was to happen to the engine, in the event of a huge repair bill would the company cover the repair cost if I paid the £300 excess etc.  Just the same as if it was a car insured of over 3 years ownership and out of warranty.   My policy email hasn't come through yet so can't check these things.  Just wondering...

It's the gamble everyone who modifies a vehicle within warranty takes - if it's a worry - don't do it!

Warranty exclusion is only likely to apply to the modified and associated parts, probably :)

Most reputable tuners like Shark always leave a safety margin I'm sure.

I'm sure the vehicle with be fine. Driven vehicles for years that in some forms really are on the build tolerances. A mild map on a decent CR unit like the 1.6 TDI will be fine.

Comfortable with the "gamble" but nice to know there's some form of support incase anything does happen.

A slight tidy up has been done in this thread so apologies to people who know they've posted and now can't find what they've written.

I'm sure you'll appreciate why. ;)

Anyhoo, let the testing begin.  The full tank of Shell Fuelsave Diesel is in there (standard at my local garage) I'll get back in around 550 +/- miles  to do a Maxidot vs real life comparison....
